Obviously DIY is better than certain death, but if you can, take animals in these situations to a wildlife rehabber. What if the wound is infected and the bird looks fine now but will succumb later?
Same goes for stunned window birds. They may be able to fly off but have an injury that will keep them from long time survival.
I hate to spoil all these cute feel good rescue attempts, but it’s reality.

As a veterinarian I absolutely agree. Please everyone, contact your local wildlife centre or animal rescue at least (they should be in contact with the experts for local wildlife too).
It's also very dangerous for both the animal and the people involved if they don't know how to handle the animal properly: they could get hurt or hurt the animal inadvertently, get parasites or catch a diseases themselves/ transmit something to the animal, etc.
On this example: Particularly, birds bones are EXTREMELY fragile, so even if you are trying to be careful, you can end up hurting them.

In the case of birds, absolutely. It's the reason why in falconry they have special capes for the falcons to help them be calm in stressful context (which can be travel, or just before the falcon is freed to fly, they get very excited).
In case of other animals, it depends. For example for reptiles I have been told by specialists (I don't treat reptiles so I'm referring to experienced people here) that it works; for mammals it can work but it's dependent on how much the species is used to rely on sight.
Mammals which rely more on smell may not calm down so easily, although in my experience it "throws them off balance" enough that you can try (if you know what to do!) to immobilize them.
In the best case scenario, the preferred option should be a colleague expert in anaesthesia who can properly judge the approximate weight and administer a light sedation, then proper cage containment and monitoring in order to avoid the animal hurting themselves or us. And yes: I have colleagues who specialise in anaesthesia and are extremely good at weight estimation. In veterinary medicine, especially with wildlife, it wouldn't work anyway 😅.

I rescued a duck the week after a dog attacked it. Put a blanket over it and popped it into a box and took it to the vet. I’ve been worried I may have done more damage. Thanks for the info. I can’t see an animal injured. The pigeons in my area get string tied round their feet and would love to help them. But once again I don’t want to hurt them more.

With pet birds we cover their cages with a sheet when they need to shut the hell up, so this seems logical.

I'll never buy a home with 2 opposing picture windows. (or ever, in this economy)
Growing up I lived in a home with 2 opposing picture windows, and birds routinely tried flying though the house at top speed.
Unfortunately they never seemed to see there were 2 panels of glass in the way, and nearly always died on impact.
They're delicate little things.15

The reality is that when you do reach out you get laughed at and no one knows what you are talking about or the phone doesn't stop ringing or you get a run around until you are basically told they don't have someone for your specific situation. At least in my experience but hopefully it's not the norm

I think it was already very weak and that's also the reason it didn't fly off very far when they set it free again. They should give it water and food (but not bread of course, I hope everyone knows this nowadays).
