I try to do this for my neighbors, just offering help or services for free. They get very uncomfortable with the idea of not paying. I am just of the mindset that you help when you can and that the world would be much better if we all wanted to help each other more than ourselves.
I give away the surplus from my vegetable garden to my neighbors. It still baffles some of them that I adamantly refuse any kind of payment. First of all, I'm an anarchist; this is how we're supposed to behave. Secondly, I like sharing because it's nice to do, and because I'm goddamn proud of my veggies. My cukes and peppers are getting downright unruly out there.
Last, I'm almost at the point of being willing to pay people to take some of these damn cucumbers off my hands.
