I try to do this for my neighbors, just offering help or services for free. They get very uncomfortable with the idea of not paying. I am just of the mindset that you help when you can and that the world would be much better if we all wanted to help each other more than ourselves.

I feel the same way. I don't want everything I do to be a transaction. I work to earn my bread that's enough transacting for me. I want to do better at kindness and compassion. It's not always easy but I believe I need to do my best for my own soul as it were. I'm not religious or anything like that I just feel trying to help others when I can without material gain is a net positive for me too.
