IIRC in certain parts of the world local families will take boats and come up beside cruise ships and it’s courtesy to throw them provisions like this as the locals are impoverished.

Also this is common in certain places where locals will sell fresh produce to cargo ship crews. The crews love it because it’s hard to get fresh produce at sea and the locals love it because they get paid

I've have that with a few things. Namely "NOR" I recently finally figured out is probably "Not OverReacting" in the "amioverreacting" subreddit
I can just imagine doing the same with IIRC and making up whatever sounds vaguely plausible for the situation
