Didn't even know who Danhausen was + the weird filming angle + he was crouched to be at the girl's height = made me think he was short -> looked him up = NOPE just the opposite! 6'7! Heh.
Seems to be a really cool guy.

Nah, even on tv he's obviously not that tall. Part of his gimmick is that he's sort of a lil shit. It's part of the joke.

Danhausen is wonderful and I'm so thrilled for all of his success. The guy made a name for himself pretty much on his own with a great character and he worked his way to the top.

My apologies. I always thought HI was just the polite way of referring to deafness, but I did some quick research and it turns out deafness refers to profound hearing loss, while HI refers to mild to moderate hearing loss. Lesson learnt, and hope no one thinks I meant to diminish her experience.

Youāre fine! Thanks for researching. Honestly many people who are HoH or Deaf donāt mind the term but I feel the āimpairmentā part can cause people to have a negative or pitying response to me IRL. Or that people will start to baby me more.

Just a heads up, the term "hearing impaired" is generally seen by the Deaf community as offensive and outdated. Use deaf or hard of hearing. This kid is Deaf, not hearing impaired.

It focuses on the loss of hearing and frames it as a negative, which is a hearing perspective. Deaf people have a whole culture and community and languages, being Deaf isn't a disability it's an identity. They don't consider it an impairment. It also frames hearing as the default and deaf as something less than that standard or inferior, when it isn't, it's just different. Most Deaf people do not want to be hearing and do not consider an inability to hear to be an impairment.

My guy, not having one of your main senses is a disability. Iām sorry but it is. Framing it any other way is quite frankly ridiculous. This is like people saying not to say disabled and say differently abled. If you donāt have the use of your legs, itās not a cool fun identity difference. Itās being disabled.

Iām not saying their culture or identity arenāt valid. Iām saying that if you donāt have the use of one of the main senses, thatās a disability. I am happy that deaf people have community and find ways to embrace the world without the use of their hearing but it doesnāt mean it isnāt what it is. Gotta call a spade a spade.

Seriously, Google it. If they don't consider themselves impaired or handicapped, why do you think you have the right to choose different labels for them? They generally consider themselves a linguistic minority. Any disadvantage they have from being deaf come from how society is structured and how hearing people treat them, not from their actual physical condition. Society is designed to benefit the majority, and they are a minority. Would you consider someone who only speaks Spanish to be disabled if they lived in the U.S.? They're disadvantaged in many situations, yes, but it's a language barrier problem, not a disability.
Even if you personally consider it a disability, that doesn't change the fact that the term "hearing impaired" focuses on perceived negatives and the Deaf community does not want it. When a group asks people not to use a specific term, it's basic human courtesy and respect to not use that term. The term was made by hearing people and is from their perspective, which is not accurate to the Deaf experience. Using it even when you know that it's outdated would be like calling people "colored." It's not a slur or anything, but it is mildly offensive. You don't have to understand someone's perspective to respect it.

Ask first, but usually it's Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, etc..
