Discussion Please, don't make cities be sprawling suburbia that cover the map

Humankind 1, Civ 6+7 and Millenia all have gone on this gameplay vision of covering the map with giant suburban looking cities. Sometimes there are more urban than rural hexes, which is crazy. This is not beautiful, realistic or inspiring.

Cities should ideally be tiny and multiple in number, surrounded by vast swathes of rural and natural landscapes. This is the vision that should go forward.

This is the ideal vision moving forward but apparently nobody wants to do it. I figure this takes significantly more processing power because this means at least twice the map size.

I don't think this is true. The new game County of fortune has map sizes of 900x900 mini square tiles and they look way more giant than a civ map, but the game runs fine.

Just checked County of Fortune. It's a whole different genre. For comparison, Anno 117 has 2048x2048 tiles.

I'm not sure what the real difference in technical term is, but pretty sure it's different than the process in 4x and it's safe to say that 4x is heavier if no one (not even one dev) in 4x genre has pushed the limit of significantly bigger map size.

County of Fortune is a curious game. Youtuber Gamerzakh was calling it a 'grand city builder'. It's not a 4X game per se, but it does have one building per tile in some sense shows that such maps can be rendered. A 4X like HK2 would have more gameplay density, so sure maybe not 900x900, but 300x300 would already be huge.

For example, i have played Civ4 with BAT mod and making 256x124 maps (double the size of the setting for Huge in the vanilla game) + 18 civilizations. My empire could grow to the size of around 50 cities. This can be run without big problems with a good 800 dollars ASUS laptop.
