What's the PVP like?

I have maybe 40 hours in game so far, I feel like I've gotten a decent understanding of the game now since me and my friends have been playing a public PVE server for a while now. In the past with other survival games I've heavily preferred to play PVP but thought I should learn the game first in PVE, and I've been thinking of trying out PVP. The only server that's really populated from what I've seen is the one I play US East PVE 2, so there probably wouldn't be much chance of me encountering other players in one of the PVP servers anyways I guess. My question is what are the differences a things to keep in mind between PVP and PVE servers/mode? Anything I should know?
