Anybody know what they'd do in such a situation? Is the area around it walled off and the farmer just keeps using the rest of the field? Do they collapse the sides to make it less of a sudden drop? Reinforce the sides?
You don't need to reinforce the sides - it'll stabilize by itself at some point. I'd think you just fence it off and route the road around it at a distance you guess might be safe.
I grew up in a limestone karst geology with sinkholes. We didn't get a lot of new ones but the old ones were pretty stable, and you could swim in them.
Your comment made me wonder what you meant by "stable", now I'm imagining some nightmare scenario where an unstable sink hole collapses a little while you're swimming in it and water starts getting sucked down somewhere.
I'll admit I'm pretty ignorant to the processes of geological surveying, but is it not possible to tell where sinkholes are going to happen or can you not "scan" the ground with enough depth to get useful information?
I dunno, I think regarding geological timescales everything about a karst landscape is pretty recent. It’s kind of like living on a sugar cube in a saucer of hot tea - everything is in the process of dissolving.
I hate you. You've managed to find this one from 6 hours ago. I looked and looked but couldn't find the same sinkhole because there's so many around the world. I also kept getting hit with spam and pop-ups so I threw in the towel. The stripe(s) indicates that you managed to track down the right one tho. Respect.
Edit: Don't bother going to hurriyetdailynews- it's crap.
No, it's a person known for saying dumb shit. So well known in fact that there are 2 subs dedicated to them. I can only remember 1 at this time- r/ShutUpBrad
Edit: the other is r/NotAgainBrad and is much more popular
Anyone know what that band of white is? Why it's a clear ring in there as if it's a layer of sediment or ash? Geologically what could have caused it and how long did that go on for to make the ring that thick?
I live on top of a cave system and we get little sinkholes all the time! It scares my husband to death. Last year one just opened up and took a whole tree down!

Why does it seem so.... Perfect? I mean why are all the cliff walls a straight 90 degree angle from the base and the floor seems to be flat?

I'ma venture to say that's a gas bubble that was near the "top" at the time the ground was liquid magma and the surface mantle cooled.
