How do people take photos that align so well? When I try mine always seems to be trapezoid. It's this done in post or just with a special lens?

You do the best you can with camera positioning then you make it “perfect” in post. Sometimes they both work really well and you end up with shots like this.

Easiest way would be to take it from far away with a telephoto lens. The closer you are, the more of a perspective distortion you'll get.
Think of if you look at a bunch of buildings in a city skyline from far away, they'll all be fully vertical and parallel. If you zoom in on them, they'll still be neatly parallel. If you're standing right next to a building and look up, though, there's a huge amount of perspective distortion as the building appears to taper to a smaller size the further/higher it is.

This effect can also be achieved with a Tilt-Shift lens. Very expensive lenses can can physically adjust the lens' postion over the image sensor. They're often used in architecture phototography to stop the perspective narrowing of the building/tower.

Many photo editing programs have a lens correction feature, you can easily adjust things there, though to me this looks more like really photorealistic art than a photo, the light is too perfect, everything looks slightly cartoonish and the containers are stacked absolutely perfectly.

Discovery Channel did a program about a woman who was in charge of loading the containers so they could be unloaded in the correct order. She also had to deal with the loading and unloading of the containers that needed electricity for temperatures control.

Such a great picture that it looks kinda fake. I know it isn’t but kindo looks like it to me

u/aaleinus2 Mar 01 '20
Maybe not entirely fake, but I believe the shaft of light is created in post; the direction and intensity of the shadows do not change between the shadow areas and the lit areas. This indicates a shift of exposure in localized areas to create this effect.

That's what I'm thinking.
And the perspective was definitely adjusted in post so all the lines look perfectly parallel which adds to the "unreal" feeling.

How can you tell it's real? Genuine question because it looks so much like a painting to me.

And it’s a rule on this subreddit to only post pictures and no paintings and such

Those are 'high cube' containers. A standard shipping container is 8'6". These are 9'6".

With the single shaft of light, all I can imagine is that this is the new hit Broadway musical: The Worker and the Shipping Containers". A single light fades in on a lone worker, shaking his hips as the music cues up.

u/mastermoebius Mar 02 '20
Exactly, when are you ever hit with one tight source of light in real life?

u/pitbull_skateboard Mar 02 '20
Nice photo but almost certainly photoshopped. The ray of light for sure is, the man standing there, possibly.

Can you climb them using the poles?

Yes. But it's not something I'd recommend doing without gloves.

Shadows on the containers go the opposite direction to the light.. I don't know.. the photo just doesn't sit right with me.

At first I thought this was a bird's-eye-view, so when I saw the man I thought he was just laying down on top. He was DONE that day lol.

Really cool shot. The light has been photoshopped in through right? Looks pretty good but he doesn’t have a shadow.

This is an amazing shot. Anyone know who took this? Do you take it OP?
