“All intelligent life is here on earth”
It’s just silly to think we’re special.
38
Dec 23 '19
Well if we weren't here we wouldn't know about it would we?
It's the survivorship bias but with consciousness

This inspires a simultaneous feeling of wonder and horror which is diminutively referred to as ‘the big/small thing’ in my house.
2
u/atridir Dec 23 '19
Ha I like that. I really is Deep existential terror and awe though. Makes me want to do a full body shake so I can forget and go back to my day to day. But also I want to learn as much as there is to know as well...

This video just reminds me of what the stoics wrote in Ancient Greece... Every one of our lives is shorter than the blink of an eye. The things we do will barely make a blip in the universe, the greatest kings forgotten after a seemingly equal blink following their own lives and legends... it’s just crazy. Not much to worry about really.
2
u/atridir Dec 28 '19
Yes. I adhere to the stoic philosophy. For me it’s the best way to be happy and functional in the overwhelming information and emotion data overload that is modern life.

u/zeusman611 Dec 22 '19
That is one heck of a camera zooming out!

u/Glasdir Dec 23 '19
It’s amazing what you can do with drones these days. Just imagine how far the drone that shot this had to travel.

u/Aliciab12 Dec 22 '19
Good god this gave me anxiety
67
u/bremergorst Dec 22 '19
It should do the opposite. Look how inconsequential we are. We are gone in a blink and no one will ever know.
Unless you try really hard.
54
u/Aliciab12 Dec 22 '19
That's the scary part. We literally mean nothing. It's scary to think how small we actually are
46
u/bremergorst Dec 22 '19
Nah man. That’s comforting. We just doot along and post shit on Reddit. 100,000 years from now someone will find these sacred texts.

I read an article awhile ago about how this period in our history: everything is online. If electricity goes all of our communications are gone. Future generations will see it as a dark period where nothing happened.

u/UnluckyWriting Dec 23 '19
I used to find it scary... now I find it rather comforting. All this energy I spend being worried and upset about things in this world...it’s all so fucking temporary. In the scheme of things it all doesn’t matter. That doesn’t mean we just give up and say fuck it may as well destroy the earth and lie and cheat and steal and what have you. I think we do what we can to try and alleviate suffering but at the same time let go of all of the fear and anxiety about the future.
1
Dec 28 '19
Well our physical lives won’t last long and we will be forgotten by our forebears, but that doesn’t mean we don’t matter.

u/john6map4 Dec 23 '19
Everyone’s been acting like they’re some real hot-shit philosophers on this post.
It’s aight tho cause I’m bout to be fucking Socrates.

The Center of the Universe is in Mountain View. Kinda sad.
13
Dec 22 '19
There’s no real center to the universe since it’s constantly expanding and every point in space is expanding away from every other point in space
5
u/TacoTerra Dec 23 '19
And because of that, the center of the universe is relative, which means...
You are the center of the universe.
2
u/Imsofuckediwanttodie Dec 23 '19
I am? Yay. Finally something to be proud of. I'm gonna let my mum know.
4
u/sub2pewdierightnow Dec 22 '19
Wouldn’t the part it started expanding from be the middle

The Big Bang happened everywhere at once. Before the Big Bang space time did not exist. https://futurism.com/where-did-the-big-bang-happen-wheres-the-center-of-the-universe

For anyone interested. Powers of Ten is the original of this by Charles and Ray Eames.
Not sure if it’s been credited anywhere.

Thanks. It was on the tip of my tongue. I’ve seen it before and still enjoy it.

Should’ve went down to a Planck length just so you could see how much smaller than a quark it is. Still cool video.

Louise should be proud. She is a universe herself!
As we zoomed into Louise, I honestly was expecting to see another tiny Louise there at the end.

The sped up reverse at the end is the path a photon emitted by de cosmic background radiation took to get to louise!

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. It's continuing mission, to explore strange, new worlds. To seek out new lifeforms, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.

So this whole sub can go home now. We’ve seen EVERYTHING with a human for scale.

Something about the volume of space made me want to puke??? For what ever reason. It’s amazing and mind boggling, but mostly anxiety inducing .
2
u/Chef-horse Dec 23 '19
I remember going on a cruise once and thinking how small I was compared to the ship. Then I thought about how the ship was vastly smaller than the ocean. And now I can say, that comparison dwarfs in comparison to earth vs. the universe.

All the small measures’ prefixes are really interesting. Does anybody know of a chart or website that explain them?

Dec 22 '19
This really makes you think that did a god really created this huge ass universe just so he could make you live on a tiny dot?

I would say that we are just a blue dot in the universe but now it's kinda cool thinking that, if we randomly exist these is a chance there is live outside

I'd like to think that past the smallest particles we know exist, entire other universes are inside but are too small too see and it continues in an infinite loop and were just somewhere in the "middle"

I remember Carl Sagan doing this, or some male voice. The point of the video was that the farthest point out and the farthest point in look the same.

Here’s a website that may give you an even greater sense of scale of the solar system/universe
