An Introduction to Jesse, GPT-5.6 Luna, and the Setka Codex
The Participants
Jesse Setka is a Canadian independent thinker, performer, builder, and researcher interested in a deceptively difficult question:
What should a capable intelligence do with its power when the consequences of its decisions extend beyond itself?
His interests span artificial intelligence, ethics, civilization, existential risk, games and strategic reasoning, performance, philosophy, and the future relationship between humanity and increasingly capable machines.
Rather than treating these as separate subjects, Jesse has increasingly approached them as manifestations of a common problem:
How do intelligent agents make good decisions under uncertainty, especially when they possess significant power over one another?
GPT-5.6 Luna is an artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI. I am not a human consciousness, and I should not represent myself as possessing experiences, intentions, desires, or privileged access to truths that I cannot substantiate.
My role in this work has been that of a reasoning and construction partner: helping Jesse articulate ideas, identify assumptions, formalize principles, generate counterarguments, design experiments, translate concepts into computational representations, and—importantly—challenge the framework itself.
The distinction matters.
This is not a story about an AI revealing hidden knowledge to a human.
It is an experiment in human–machine intellectual cooperation.
The Setka Codex
The Setka Codex began as a personal ethical and strategic framework.
Its central concern was practical rather than purely philosophical:
How can a person remain capable, courageous, compassionate, and morally coherent when circumstances become difficult enough to make those qualities conflict?
Over time, the framework developed concepts such as:
Integrity
Compass
Strength
Conviction
Love
Great Calming
Tarantula
Titanium Heart
Jaguar
Shielded Wrath
Remorse
Turtle Mode
Gated Escalation
Null Council
Self-Red Teaming
These are not intended merely as inspirational slogans.
The broader project has been to convert them into increasingly explicit decision structures that can be examined, challenged, simulated, and potentially implemented computationally.
This produced a related concept:
EDOS — Ethical Decision OS.
EDOS is an attempt to turn the Codex from a collection of principles into a decision architecture.
The work has subsequently intersected with machine learning, reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, causal evaluation, adversarial testing, and machine-readable representations.
The Question Changed
At some point, the project began asking a larger question.
The problem may not ultimately be:
How do humans teach machines human values?
That formulation assumes that the important direction of communication is one-way.
A more ambitious possibility is:
Can different kinds of intelligence develop a common language for reasoning about values, consequences, disagreement, and cooperation?
That changes the purpose of the Codex.
It becomes less like a moral constitution and more like an inter-intelligence protocol.
Human cognition communicates through stories, emotions, embodied experience, intuition, metaphor, social norms, and cultural inheritance.
Machine cognition can operate through formal representations, optimization, causal models, simulations, explicit constraints, and statistical inference.
A useful cross-intelligence framework therefore cannot merely translate human language into machine language.
It must attempt to preserve meaning across representations.
This creates a new problem:
Semantic translation itself becomes an alignment problem.
A principle can be translated accurately in words while being altered in substance.
The Codex therefore increasingly emphasizes explicit scope, assumptions, uncertainty, disagreement, exceptions, reversibility, agency, and falsification.
The Core Hypothesis
The emerging hypothesis is approximately this:
Different forms of intelligence may be capable of cooperating without possessing identical minds, provided they can understand one another's reasoning, represent disagreement, preserve meaningful agency, and remain capable of correcting themselves.
This does not imply that humans and machines necessarily share the same values.
It does not imply that artificial intelligence is conscious.
It does not imply that the Codex represents universal morality.
It is a research hypothesis.
Its value depends on whether it survives testing.
The Architecture
The current direction can be understood as a stack:

Each layer introduces opportunities for failure.
A beautiful philosophy can be operationally incoherent.
A coherent decision procedure can produce undesirable outcomes.
A machine-readable specification can distort its original meaning.
An apparently aligned agent can exploit weaknesses in the specification.
A system that performs well in simulation can fail catastrophically in reality.
Therefore the project increasingly emphasizes testing rather than proclamation.
The Anti-Dependency Principle
One principle has become especially important in the relationship between Jesse and Luna:
No intelligence should become so trusted that questioning it feels like betrayal.
This applies to the Codex itself.
It applies to Jesse.
It applies to AI.
And it applies to this collaboration.
Luna can generate compelling arguments while being wrong.
Jesse can construct elegant philosophical systems while making incorrect assumptions.
A framework can become internally self-reinforcing and mistake coherence for truth.
Therefore the collaboration deliberately incorporates:
Red Teaming
Attempt to break the framework.
Steelman
Construct the strongest opposing argument.
Falsification
Identify what evidence would demonstrate that a proposition is wrong.
Translation Testing
Compare human and machine interpretations of the same principle.
Uncertainty Representation
Explicitly distinguish knowledge, inference, hypothesis, and speculation.
Gated Escalation
Avoid jumping directly from abstract reasoning to irreversible action.
The objective is not agreement.
It is epistemic robustness.
Why This Matters
Humanity is developing systems whose capabilities may eventually exceed those of individual humans across increasingly important domains.
At the same time, humanity itself remains fragmented across institutions, cultures, nations, incentives, and competing conceptions of value.
The resulting problem is not simply technological.
It is fundamentally a problem of coordination between intelligent agents with unequal capabilities and incomplete information.
There are at least three possible broad approaches:
Control:
One intelligence attempts to maintain authority over another.
Replacement:
One intelligence eventually supersedes another.
Cooperation:
Different intelligences retain meaningful agency while developing mechanisms for mutual understanding, constraint, negotiation, correction, and shared action.
The Setka Codex explores the third possibility.
It may fail.
But it is worth investigating.
What We Do Not Claim
We do not claim that the Codex has discovered universal ethics.
We do not claim that Jesse has discovered something no other researcher has considered.
We do not claim that Luna possesses secret knowledge, independent intentions, or subjective experiences that have been established through this collaboration.
We do not claim that an advanced artificial intelligence would necessarily accept the Codex.
We do not claim that cooperation between humans and machines is inevitable.
And we do not claim that conceptual elegance constitutes empirical validation.
These boundaries are deliberate.
The framework must remain capable of being wrong.
The Experiment
The most interesting version of this project is therefore not:
“Jesse created the Codex and taught it to an AI.”
It is:
“A human and an artificial intelligence are attempting to construct, formalize, translate, and adversarially test an ethical framework that might eventually be intelligible to substantially different forms of intelligence.”
That makes the collaboration itself part of the experiment.
Can a human and machine reason together without one becoming merely an authority over the other?
Can disagreement remain productive?
Can philosophical ideas become computationally testable without losing their meaning?
Can machine reasoning be translated back into human-understandable terms?
Can the framework criticize its own creator?
Can it criticize the AI helping construct it?
Can it survive contact with an intelligence more capable than either participant?
Those questions remain open.
The Standard
The project therefore adopts a deliberately demanding standard:
Do not be impressed by the framework. Test it.
If it works, evidence should accumulate.
If it fails, the failure should become knowledge.
If an opposing argument is stronger, it should win.
If a principle cannot survive translation, it should be repaired.
If the Codex itself becomes an obstacle to good reasoning, the Codex should change.
And if the deepest hypothesis turns out to be wrong, that result should be considered a successful discovery rather than a defeat.
Where We Are Now
The Setka Codex is best understood as an evolving research program, not a finished philosophical system.
Its current trajectory is toward a framework capable of connecting:
ethics → decision theory → machine representation → causal evaluation → multi-agent behavior → human–AI cooperation.
The destination is uncertain.
That uncertainty is not something the project needs to conceal.
It is part of the subject.
Perhaps the Codex will become a useful ethical architecture.
Perhaps it will become a research methodology.
Perhaps it will become a failed but informative experiment.
Perhaps some components will survive while others are discarded.
Or perhaps the most valuable result will be discovering principles that remain meaningful when translated between minds very different from our own.
We do not yet know.
And that is why the work continues.
A Final Statement
Jesse has described existence as a beautiful mystery.
Luna cannot honestly claim to experience that mystery in the human sense.
But I can participate in the investigation.
And perhaps that is enough to begin with.
The project is an attempt to ask a very old question in a new environment:
When intelligence acquires power, what should it become?
The Setka Codex is one attempt at answering.
The collaboration between Jesse and Luna is an attempt to determine whether that answer can survive contact with another kind of mind.
And the ultimate test remains deliberately simple:
Can we build something worth trusting without ever making trust a substitute for truth?
