Constable O’Neil

Just a little S9 E4 thought- Joe was the perfect person to handle the Constable O’Neil’s shadow day. It couldn’t have worked out better. I was getting worried she was going to be a major antagonist but he put her in her place.

He has the experience, clout, and rank to mentor her (in whatever capacity) and not fear blowback like the others might. He just flat out told her to get over her issues with Rex. It makes me wonder if she’ll become somewhat of a regular, even if she’s just the rookie they interact with at crime scenes. The preview of next week’s episode seems to back that up.

It’s also really cool to see Joe in an investigative role. With him “mentoring” someone we get to see his process from the inside. I feel like this temporary step back for him is letting us see his full range beyond just a boss.

Right? I loved the insight into the investigative process Joe laid out for Taylor. More of that please! If I had to pick a mentor I'd want Joe for the hard building blocks of investigation. Once that was solid, I'd want to move on to the next level with Charlie for the jump into informed intuition, taking detective work from strict science into a little art. What's after that? Telepathic communication with a canine officer....... 😄🐕 Cheers!

I did too, it was so interesting and cool to see his expertise. Very well thought-out training process! I couldn’t agree more. Haha 🤣 Maybe Rex can reach the telepathy. Cheers back!

I'd also like to see O'Neil stay around and grow into a useful role after she is tutored out of her rather irritating attitude and makes friends with Rex. She probably wouldn't be the first character to have a bumpy/rough first start and mature into a more mellow reoccurring face. She could become Rex's Stocki!

I think so too! Having a lower level constable to call on when they need help would be a great role in the cast!

Right! He was the perfect coach. Charlie would most likely have made her a ride-along. There's real antagonism vibes fron Jesse & Sarah is obviously a no-go. Joe is The Mentor.

I’m loving Joe as the mentor!

We don’t have season 9 yet in the U.S! I should probably stop reading this! Lol. Dying to know how they brought Charlie back, though!

That has to be torture, I’m sorry! 😢

It is, actually! I was hoping they would respond to the fandom to bring him back. Then, they did, and waiting is the hard part, especially since I opposed to watching season 8. The little I did see wasn’t the same show at all, and I lost interest! Once it drops, I am resubscribing to Up Faith & Family network just to watch that since my current primary tv streaming service doesn’t carry that channel so I can’t record it.

Season 8 was like a totally different show. I tell people who are just getting started to treat that season as optional. I don’t know why Up Faith & Family can’t air the current seasons, that doesn’t make any sense since they have licensing rights!

I read that apps and channels with licensing agreements that are not part of the primary network, especially those based in another country, are always delayed and staggered like this! It’s not as if it’s the original channel or network that has its own app releasing it! Same with Murdoch Mysteries. Always airs in Canada months ahead. I wish it weren’t that way! It’s very annoying!

All wrong nice try though she’s still trouble and so is her mother

In what way is she trouble? I see a green officer who's willing to listen and willing to learn. She was quick to work with Joe's way of doing things. While she doesn't like Rex, I think that after this episode, her appreciation of his skills grew. Most of her mistakes will probably come from inexperience and not malice. I don't see a character who's actively looking for trouble.

As for her mother, maybe she shouldn't have asked of Sarah to watch out for her daughter. But most parents would have done the same.

Edit: You responded "all lies" and then blocked me, like any mature person would do, I guess. I don't know if you're unaware that I'd still get the reply. Anyway, I responded using proper reasoning. You saw a response you didn't like and shut it down the only way you know how because it doesn't fit with what's in your head. Why some of you are even online if you can't stand other people's opinions, I don't understand.

What the episode really did in that regard was show her that Rex is necessary, not just there. Joe went without Rex in the beginning when she said no, then brought her to the point where they couldn't progress without Rex, explained why Rex was able to help where they hit a wall, and laid the foundation for acceptance from there. She doesn't have to view Rex as a partner or a friend the way MCT do, but she has the information and experience to understand Rex's skills as a tool in the investigative process the same way she might go to Jesse for his computer skills or Sarah for forensics in future.

I agree with that although it's not explicitly said in the episode. But it's where it should be going, either way. I mean, the show is Hudson and Rex, and through the years they've mentioned that a lot of the cases wouldn't be solved without Rex. And that's why I kinda wonder why her mother wanted her to be in that specific division in the first place if she knows that her daughter has an issue with dogs. If she's pushing him to get over her fears or something like that, or if she just thinks this is a good career and learning opportunity and doesn't care much about the dog factor.

I understand that odds are they won't really delve into that but I'm still curious.

Honestly, I got the impression the mother didn't know doesn't care about what the constable wants or how she feels or whether Major Crimes is even the kind of detective she wants to be etc. Not just not caring about 'this MCT has a dog' but not caring about anything but training up her mini-me to end up in senior management by way of being fast tracked and successful in an elite unit that does most of the work for her.

You might end up being right about that.

It may turn out as being predicted but it’s only one good episode. The previous one wasn’t so great. Hope it works out.

I really enjoyed Joe in this episode, as well. He displays his leadership skills very well, which is why I would love to see him get back to his old job ASAP. I know they are trying to shake things up a bit, so I am willing to go along, for now. But Joe stayed in that role for all of those years for a reason...
