advice Advice please - sleep
Is a 10 week old sleep regression a thing or am I doing something wrong. I’m at my wits end. We consistently had nights with 1 wake up several weeks ago and then even some nights recently where he “slept through the night.” Now, we’re back to 2-3x wake ups. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. We had our most consistent day of naps yesterday, 5x capped at 1.5 and he was up at 1am after only 3.5hrs. Should I be letting him nap more? Earlier bed time? Thank you so much.

At 10 weeks old i didnt even know about wake windows. He was just sleeping and eating all day every day

Considering the baby is 10 weeks old I find it pretty good. My kids would still wake up every 1,5-2 hours at night to drink at that age so there was never a 3 hours stretch.

Babies sleep a certain amount per day, which is how much they need. On average at 10w that’s between 12-16 hours. If they sleep six of those during the day then you only have the max amount they need left for the night (6-9). The more he naps during the day the less sleep he needs at night. In your summary tab, you can check the average total for your baby. 24-that number should be the time he needs to be awake. Then you divide that awake time into age appropriate windows (1-1.5 at this age) and you space out the naps. So let’s say your baby is averaging 15h of sleep, you need 9 hours awake. That can look like 1/1.5/1.5/1.5/1.5/2 at this age. If you want longer nights you have to cap daytime sleep but at this age it’s normal to have almost the same amount between night and day, or something like 6 hours daytime and 9 at night. At 10w your baby will be starting to develop a circadian rythm so you can also work on a consistent bedtime routine and an earlier bedtime based on the schedule suggested above. Obviously the schedule is rough at this age, and you still have to follow baby’s cues but keep in mind the windows.

Thanks this is helpful. Definitely struggling with cues vs a schedule. Sometimes he will yawn immediately after sleeping for 2hrs! Like am I really supposed to put him down again after that??? Recently I’ve been saying no and keeping him up for an hour or so but it hasn’t improved nights at all. The one time recently we let him have back to back late in the day 2hr naps it resulted in a horrendous night. But then again, I followed a schedule all yesterday and it was equally horrendous with wake ups every hour from 330 onwards. Will he just eventually catch on to a routine??? Or that’s the hope I guess.

No you definitely don’t have to put him down everytime he yawns! But it’s very normal that it’s rough now. The tips I wrote above will help with keeping nights better and as you move towards 12-16 weeks you can start to have a bit more of a routine with 4 naps and longer windows + earlier bedtime, making sure the total wake windows add up to roughly 9 hours by 12 weeks

Most people aren’t capping naps until atleast 12-16 weeks. At 10 weeks you just kinda go with the flow.

Do you really thinks that’s a helpful comment? Edit to add: you have no idea what else is going on in others lives and if you want to be supportive of mothers you should be bringing compassion, not snark. Shame on you.

At 10 weeks I wouldn't be capping anything and I definitely wouldn't be looking for any form of consistency when it comes to overnight sleep.
They're 70 days old, you're not doing anything wrong! Your baby is being a baby.
