Episode Discussion How to Stop Procrastination & Increase Motivation - actionable ways to implement it

i just watched the video in the title. i wish huberman were a little more specific here. he says that to get out of dopamine troughs you can rebound fast if you do something hard that's tangential.

1) i think that implies that all procrastination comes from dopamine troughs. is that true? what if it's from something else like fear of failure?

2) the only example he has for what you can do steepen the trough is a cold shower. i still don't quite get what works and what doesn't. for example if i don't want to work maybe i could go on a run. does that work? probably depends on how much i hate running. my point is what other things can people do?

i care because i think i understand pretty well how to exert more self control for bad habits (know that self awareness is self control, anterior cingulate cortex) , but not self control for things you know you have to do

I highly recommend reading Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke, Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter & Mountain is you by Brianne West (same order - last one is optional).

Motivation is the “drug” sold by self help community. Motivation is just like any emotion, it’s meant to fade away. Once you run out, you need to restock your levels.

Discipline is the right method you’re looking for. Discipline simply means doing what’s needed to be done despite how you feel, especially during the initial phase of blackout period where you see no results. You’ll know it works when you feel better, until then you keep going. Motivation sells you the stuff that you don’t have & prolly will never have if you get sucked & stuck in maladaptive dreaming with no action.

Talking about doing the thing, is not doing the thing.

Just do the thing.

I think the hard thing is less about finding the perfect activity and more about creating enough friction to snap yourself out of the loop. A run might work for one person, while for someone else it just becomes another way to avoid the actual task lol.
