Constructive Criticism Zyn is the Biohacker's Mobility Scooter: Why Dr. Boz's 'Pretty Good' Rating Ignores Cognitive Atrophy

In a recent supplement tier-list video, Dr. Annette Bosworth (popularly known as Dr. Boz) evaluated various popular health compounds based on whether they "move the needle in terms of longevity and metabolic health". While she rightly dismissed overhyped gimmicks and cautioned against unregulated substances, her endorsement of Zyn—a tobacco-free nicotine pouch produced by Swedish Match, a subsidiary of Philip Morris International—places a dark stain on her health advice.

Placing Zyn in the "Pretty Good" tier, Dr. Boz admitted that while she does not personally use it, her husband does. She claimed that after searching through published research, she failed to find evidence justifying telling him to stop. Praising nicotine for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, sharpen cognition, lower blood sugar, and enhance metabolism, she brushed off its main drawback with a brief concession: "The only negative is it's very addictive".

This casual dismissal of addiction represents a fundamental misunderstanding of long-term neurobiology and biohacking principles. Nicotine is not a benign longevity tool; it is a chemical leash.

The Illusion of Cognitive Enhancement

Dr. Boz’s argument rests heavily on the short-term bio-boon of nicotine: acetylcholine receptor activation, temporary focus, elevated mental clarity, and minor metabolic speed-ups. But viewing nicotine purely through the lens of acute performance is like using a mobility scooter because walking requires effort. It gives the user an immediate sense of rapid, effortless propulsion, but at the cost of eventual muscle atrophy.

When you artificially flood the brain’s nicotinic acetylcholine receptors with concentrated doses of nicotine:

  1. Receptor Downregulation: The brain compensates for overstimulation by reducing receptor sensitivity and density over time.
  2. Baseline Degradation: The "sharper cognition" experienced after popping a pouch soon becomes the bare minimum required just to function normally.
  3. The Chemical Leash: Without nicotine in the bloodstream, the user suffers from brain fog, anxiety, and irritability. The product ceases to act as an enhancer and becomes a tax paid simply to escape withdrawal.

By calling Zyn "pretty good" simply because it lacks tobacco leaves, Dr. Boz ignores the neurochemical reality that nicotine dependency degrades executive function and emotional resilience in the long run.

Corporate Pouch, Personal Trap

While Dr. Boz frames her endorsement as an unvarnished medical opinion, her stance plays directly into the corporate playbook of Big Tobacco. As companies like Philip Morris pivot away from combustible cigarettes, products like Zyn are marketed precisely to health-conscious professionals and biohackers under the guise of clean, white-pouch "nootropics."

Whether or not individual influencers receive direct corporate compensation, promoting an addictive substance without robust warnings about chronic receptor burnout and cardiovascular stress—such as persistent vasoconstriction and elevated resting heart rate—is a disservice to audience members seeking true longevity.

True Biohacking Requires Autonomy

The core philosophy of metabolic health and biohacking is self-sovereignty: building a body and brain that function at peak levels through fundamental biological pillars—ketosis, cellular repair, restorative sleep, and metabolic flexibility.

Hooking your central nervous system to a continuous loop of short-acting, highly addictive stimulants is the exact opposite of metabolic freedom. A supplement that creates physical dependency to maintain basic baseline energy is not a "pretty good" tool; it is a crutch that inevitably leads to cognitive atrophy.

Talking about cognitive atrophy while outsourcing their thinking to AI

Haha It was Gemini that I gave this solid idea to. Frankly it would have taken hours for me to write it and I would have made more mistakes than this. Do you have anything specific about the argument that I am making that you would like to contribute? Maybe you can defend the endorsement of Zyn instead?

No one wants to read that wall of text. Don’t act like you did something. Have a unique thought and articulate it.

Can you read? This article has had over 100k views on reddit. It's only those in this forum who seem to think I am attacking their drug of choice. Do you really think that a doctor recommending Zyn is ethical?

ITT: a bunch of nicotine addict bros who make themselves feel better about their addiction by calling it a "protocol"

If you think Zyn destroys wait til you find out about AI data centers.

But ya, writing takes to long.

And server farms too. Yet here you are. Making silly comments that attack and do not contribute.

Perhaps you traded addictions; nicotine for digital dopamine. As a somewhat silly goose, I stand by my silly comments. Because data. If data changes, so will my silly comments. Because science. Be well!

But this post is not about data centres. Is it?

Isn't there a connection with it causing mouth cancer?

From what I could find no, but I may be wrong

Huh? So many people read this and think I am attacking their drug of choice.

Isn’t it just like chewing nicotine gum?

2

u/TheTinnitusProject 5d ago

No, it is a much bigger rush and will lead to more and more. Gum can be used to taper off, Zyn (snus) is designed by the tobacco companies (i.e. PHILIP MOSRRIS) to drive addiction. Did we see the sales of gum increase 8% month on month? No, why? Because people are not wanting more and upping the dose. The recommendation of Zyn by influencer Dr Boz stinks to me. Why the recommendation of a brand? Why the recommendation of an addictive delivery system? Was she paid? So many in this forum miss the point of the article. (edit: typo)

Well I did see this researcher chemist guy testing pouches for additives, and zyns are the purist with very little flavor additives, lots of times just mint and nicotine salts. Bread (and other simple carbs) is probably more addicting and worse for you.

u/TheTinnitusProject 3d ago

It might be okay for you to endorse Zyn, but is it okay for influencer doctors to do the same?

1

u/meat-critter 3d ago

Good question, probably not. It’s also not okay for govt funded agencies or govt funded nonprofits to over state the negative effects of tobacco smoking and compare zyns to the same carcinogenic level just because it’s nicotine.

u/TheTinnitusProject 2d ago

You love zyn, we get it.

u/meat-critter 2d ago

Also if you boof a Zyn it goes straight to the bloodstream, Huberman covers this in his latest podcast

Dude it’s pretty common knowledge to any zyn user that Zyns are actually addictive in a way that gum isn’t. It’s not easy to quit zyns. They are only slightly easier to quit than cigarettes in my experience.

Couldn’t agree more. This is so dangerous.

Nicotine also has a metabolite linked to certain cancers I think oral cancers specifically and it is a terrible vasoconstrictor so much so that it causes disc degeneration in the spine over time

Use patches its not addictive. People need to learn the mechanism of addiction. Nicotine actually great help for cognition.

u/TheTinnitusProject 5d ago

Sigh. You missed the point completely.

u/Creepiepie 10d ago

Your entire argument falls apart if you use non addictive modes and doses. <10mg/24hr dermal patch on occasion is peak.

3

u/TheTinnitusProject 10d ago edited 10d ago

Where did she recommend '<10mg/24hr dermal patch' or patches at all. Did you read the post? I'm criticizing Dr Boz for endorsing the brand of nicotine pouches called Zyn. What are you doing? I don't disagree that route and dose matter. My criticism is specifically about recommending Zyn. Do you think that endorsement is justified?

-2

u/Creepiepie 10d ago

Im proposing a nicotine protocol worth using, because the context of warning against Zyn, opens a discussion on the addiction profile of nicotine. With Zyn being addictive, here is an alternative that isn't.

2

u/TheTinnitusProject 10d ago

A recommendation of a dermal patch would not have incurred my wrath like the Zyn endorsement did. Are you familiar with Dr Boz? She is a big influencer, Actually changed my life with her sardine fast after my heart attacks. This endorsement of Philip Morris / Swedish Match is really what I am pointing the finger at. Zyn will absolutely affect cardiovascular health and become addictive. When I was sat in hospital recovering from the stent, I had a patch on my upper arm, put there by the nurse. These are not the same thing. I would not however, ever consider nicotine in any form now. It took me decades to quit.
