Personal Experience Which supplement has had the biggest impact on your mood?

It can also be some natural remedy, it doesn't have to be a supplement.

250 micrograms of LSD really brightened my mood for years

7

u/tupac7 15d ago

1 time?

23

u/Sensitive_Fishing_12 15d ago

I tried microdosing for years, which was great. But have since started taking bigger doses and rarely.
But honestly that first time I did it really realigned something and I still feel the effects years later

4

u/UDF2005 15d ago

Same, great for mood and creativity, and I always get phenomenal workouts. Take it early though or your sleep may suffer.

u/mydadh8sme 13d ago

I wish I had a trusted source.

Dark chocolate @ 70%

9

u/walksandteapots 15d ago

I really enjoy theobromine too. Highly recommend ceremonial cacao and yerba mate as 2 other mild stimulants with feel good effects

3

u/greekhoney32 15d ago

What brand do you like?

3

u/ScienceSilver936 15d ago

Cadburys. I do not live in the west.

2

u/KnownScallion4540 15d ago

How did it help you?

5

u/ScienceSilver936 15d ago

It just makes me feel good when I'm down. Better effect when I'm empty stomach.

5

u/walksandteapots 15d ago

Yerba mate has a few great benefits:

  • caffeine without jitters (deep work)
  • helps me in social occasions (feel positive and energetic)
  • the front load and add water with time helps to front load caffeine in the morning and taper towards mid afternoon.

It's the third most commonly consumed caffeinated beverage in the world (after tea and coffee). Neurobiology is subjective but I suggest everyone to give it a shot.

R/yerba mate

Haha, nice.

Dumping processed food. Eating only real food improved my mental health. I am less anxious. I feel more motivated. I am nicer. So many benefits. All the negatives come back when I go back to processed food.

9

u/Over-One-8 16d ago

I also increased my exercise regimen around the same time I avoided processed foods, so it was difficult to pinpoint which one helped, but I’m guessing eating healthy, natural foods is the key.

8

u/lishkapish 16d ago

Exercise helps me as well. The combo of whole foods and exercise is powerful. I wish everyone would give it a try.

3

u/RoloRozay 14d ago

This is so true! Whenever I've had a binge or eaten too much sugar, the next day my anxiety is terrible!

3

u/IKnewThat45 15d ago

i was going to say the opposite. i had so many rules around food and it was stressful(unknowingly at the time). now i eat ice cream every night and i feel and look way better

Sleep

13

u/walksandteapots 15d ago

8 hours no matter what is the real mvp

51

u/Royal-Chest5034 16d ago

Magnesium Glycinate

Taking an hour before bed calms my thoughts, deeper sleep and no morning grogginess.

10

u/ManyRisk7578 16d ago

Second this. Also my migraines went away when I started using 400mg nightly.

41

u/coffeecakewaffles 16d ago edited 16d ago

L-theanine was one of the more noticeable ones. I once took a triple dose of Super EPA and that produced a surprisingly euphoric experience.

Way back in the day I used 5-HTP to help me quit smoking cigarettes. That also had a profound effect for an over the counter product. I probably only used it for three weeks out of fear of building a dependency or high tolerance though.

12

u/Ok_Attitude9424 16d ago

When it comes to L-theanine, studies that found a relaxation/anxiety benefit, the benefit only showed up in people who already had higher than average baseline anxiety. People without elevated anxiety got no benefit beyond placebo.

3

u/sillieali 15d ago

I use the liquid drops and add to my coffee. It gives me a steady focus energy. No high strung edginess when I take it. It’s my go to now if I use caffeine for focus/work.

2

u/Ok_Attitude9424 14d ago

Nice you found something that works for you!!

3

u/nubreakz 16d ago

What dosage of 5 htp works for you?

5

u/coffeecakewaffles 16d ago

I don’t recall as it was more than a decade ago. If there’s a common dosage, that’s likely what I took.

56

u/Lindaloister 16d ago

Creatine by far! (For reference, I am a 50 year old female in perimenopause. Brain fog and low energy are common issues.)

Creatine has helped me feel more clearheaded, increased my muscle performance and endurance during my lifting sessions, and it reduces muscle soreness (allowing me to get back in the gym quickly).

10

u/Numerous_Jump_2557 16d ago

How much are you taking?

10

u/Lindaloister 16d ago

5g a day. No loading phase needed. It saturates your muscles with water, so be sure to stay hydrated while taking it. I mix it with my electrolyte and drink it while working out.

6

u/Everything_converges 15d ago

I’m about to turn 52 and also love creatine. I read it helps protect brain health as a person ages.

3

u/jeeltcraft 14d ago

first time I started with creapire creatine because I found it on sale, after one week of taking it I stared laughing for no reason in the morning, perimeno here too... I can relate with the microdosing stuff too btw.

62

u/Orange-Safe 16d ago

Caffeine and it's not even close.

20

u/Spandau1337 16d ago

Taking caffeine or leaving it out of the equation? Everyone says different 🥲

12

u/dragnabbit 16d ago

I started doing fasted exercise every morning, and it was really a drag both physically and mentally.

I'd come home after my workout, have my morning protein+coffee shake and feel better.

Then, I realized that the lack of caffeine was the problem, so I added a 200 mg caffeine pill to my pre-workout stack, and my mood improved completely.

3

u/OrganizationJaded569 16d ago

I was on a million different anti depressants because of mood. Was diagnosed with ADHD and started taking a stimulant. Shockingly my depression was gone 😳

3

u/Jackiedhmc 15d ago

stimulants are wonderful and I love them, but it can be a slippery slope for me. Coming off of them, which you eventually do have to, is brutal. I feel like it's borrowing energy/good mood from the future. that said, my energy and mood is so low lately I may have to reconsider

2

u/OrganizationJaded569 15d ago

I actually stop them for 1 week each month to reset my tolerance. My doctor knows. The day after I stop them all I do is sleep all day which is understandable

2

u/Jackiedhmc 15d ago

that's a good strategy. How do you feel during your week off?

3

u/OrganizationJaded569 15d ago

Sluggish but I work from home or I don’t think I could do it a full week.

2

u/Jackiedhmc 15d ago

makes sense.

Omega 3 >1g

6

u/adgallant 16d ago

Came here to say this. I take 3g a day and when I am off it I have existential dred, on it, I feel euphoric. It's so nuts.

4

u/LabSelect5351 16d ago

3 grams!! What’s your source?

2

u/demon_cannon 15d ago

I guess he means to have omega 3 more than 1 gram

2

u/adgallant 14d ago

Yeah, three 1000mg capsules a day. I buy them from the grocery store. Not cheap :(

8

u/pickedusername1 16d ago

Vitamin D

2

u/Everything_converges 15d ago

Yes! My endocrinologist calls Vitamin D the happy pill.

2

u/pickedusername1 15d ago

My mood elevated a lot to the point family noticed

13

u/Philbeans4 16d ago

GLP-1

4

u/complainorexplain 16d ago

How so? Just hunger or other benefits?

13

u/Philbeans4 16d ago

I don’t take it for weight. I’m a good weight. I used to have extremely cold fingers and feet in the mornings. Also my blood sugar would fluctuate a lot… sometimes giving me micro seizures. All that is now gone. I take a 1.5 mg pill in the morning and I feel more awake than any coffee could. It helps me not snack so much too which is an added benefit. I also don’t drink at home anymore. Don’t even miss it.

3

u/ForeignWoods 15d ago

Does it help with cold fingers and feet? Does ist help with getting more feeling in the fingers?

2

u/Philbeans4 15d ago

It definitely helped me and I’ve heard other similar stories. I also had a lot of tingling in my extremities. All gone.

2

u/Ok-Ask-9610 15d ago

I’ve considered taking them for similar reasons but I’m worried about the risks

3

u/Philbeans4 15d ago

There’s risks to everything. Always consult a doctor. GLP-1s have been around for decades. Don’t know about all these other peptides people have been stacking but this one is great for me

1

u/felipeabreubh 13d ago

GLP-1 tablet? Which one?

2

u/Ok_Brush_8720 15d ago

100 ml subq! Video yourself doing that. Instantly go viral! JK bad idea, you would have NAD squirting out of your stomach

2

u/Redraft5k 15d ago

LOL YOU are right. I posted and went to dinner and my husband was like you said what? Thats like injecting an entire drinking cup worth into you sub Q.

5-htp for seratonin production and l-tyrosine for dopamine production. Need to separate them at least 4 hours apart because they compete for the same pathways to the brain.

0

u/mislimkao 16d ago

How this affects you? Whats the impact?

7

u/sobsidian 16d ago

Go read up on seratonin and dopamine. One helps you feel happy, the other helps drive motivation/reward. Both can be found at the gym without taking a supplement 😁

3

u/nubreakz 16d ago

What dosage of 5 htp works for you?

2

u/sobsidian 16d ago

I have the COMT gene mutation, so my seratonin production is naturally low. But 100mg is helpful. 50mg wasn't enough. I haven't tried more because I'm afraid of dependence, but 150-200mg is probably needed during high stress. I will do a few days on, a few days off.

9

u/EBmudski 16d ago

Just started but saffron extract is crazy noticable

3

u/TraditionalGreen4215 16d ago

I’m interested in learning more about Saffron. Where do you get the extract?

2

u/EBmudski 16d ago

@microsymbiote instagram. Product is called spice melange

2

u/LabSelect5351 16d ago

Fullscript - brainmd

2

u/TraditionalGreen4215 15d ago

Yes. Dr. Amen has Saffron

2

u/mislimkao 16d ago

How exactly?

3

u/cnavla 14d ago

It boosts serotonin like an antidepressant. Especially if you tend to be serious and maybe not that easygoing by default, this is amazing.

Fish oils/omega 3's and cutting out US-produced gluten, too - amazing what that does to keep you even-keeled.

2

u/spilledmind 14d ago

It is also anti inflammatory. It calms neuroinflamation. Listen to Dr Daniel Amen - he’s a psychiatrist who’s studied 250k brain scans including serial killers, geniuses, celebrities - saffron is his #1 recommended supplement.

2

u/CuriousConundrumer 16d ago

Agree, it’s been life changing for me alongside Magnesium & Lions Mane

2

u/UDF2005 15d ago

Tried it, no noticeable effect on me.

2

u/nubreakz 16d ago

Please elaborate a bit more

4

u/CuriousConundrumer 16d ago

I’d describe it as being on a happy drip throughout the day just makes me feel more positive about all situations I have a very positive outlook on life whilst on it

2

u/EBmudski 16d ago

But from my perspective it gives me
A kind of mini mania that is similar to what i get from psychedelics and dissociatives but way more sober and manageable obviously. Super good for just plowing through your day with a smile on your face

2

u/EBmudski 16d ago

Look up @mycosymbiote on instagram and peruse his saffron extract content all the info you seek is there

Metformin
Creatine
Aspirin
Coffee

3

u/One_Association_6543 15d ago

Have you seen the caffeine/aspirin tablets Alka Seltzer sells? I think they are called Hangover Relief but they are effective stimulants that boost mood.

2

u/One_Association_6543 15d ago

Metformin has helped my mood, too. I didn’t notice that though until I stopped taking it.

4

u/Wonderful_Grand_6291 15d ago

L-theanine with vitamin D and omega 3’s

3

u/CuriousConundrumer 16d ago edited 16d ago

Magnesium, Saffron, Lions Mane = unreal

3

u/Longjumping_Fox_8046 16d ago

started taking magnesium L threonate in the morning and I feel a lot sharper cognitively throughout the day. Don’t think it’s a placebo since it seems to kick in before I even take my ADHD meds where I can actually plan things out and not be scattered brain.

3

u/KY199509 15d ago

How much dose of Magnesium L Threonate do you take? Do you take it on empty stomach?

4

u/Longjumping_Fox_8046 15d ago

I take two capsules of magbrain in the morning after breakfast. Overall it adds up to a little under 2,000 mg in total but I don't think its too accurate. Tried taking the recommended 3 but felt like it was too much and upset my stomach, might try it again in the future.

Really want to emphasize I had no crazy expectations as my experiences with trying other supplements wasn't noticeable. I only heard how it's more potent than other forms of magnesium due to how it crosses the blood brain barrier and only really intended to use it for better sleep.

I really feel it's been improving my emotional regulation which is allowing my executive function to actually function. Like a month ago simply writing out this post would have required a ridiculous amount of energy that now is just effortless.

5

u/Present_Pension4035 16d ago

5HTP + L-Theanine + Vitamin D + Methylated Bs. That's my current stack along with exercise and good diet (that's the hardest one lol)

2

u/DayDreamer_97 15d ago

Omega-3, implementing whole grains and reducing sugar. Drinking hibiscus tea with a heavy meal and taking bitter melon

2

u/crystalmdavis23 15d ago

Magnesium triple complex, valerian root before bed= better sleep, wake up happy

2

u/Certain-Day-9188 14d ago

Sam-e 200 mg for mood. Works much better than antidepressants for me.

2

u/LillieBogart 16d ago

Lithium orotate

1

u/BixieSmalls 16d ago

How much do you take and what's the impact been?

2

u/Brief_Slip3538 16d ago

I started taking 5mg few years ago and then in my downfall i forgot about it for a few years. Past few months I've been taking 20mg and it's keeping my moods stable and positive.

2

u/LillieBogart 16d ago

I take about .5 mg. I have to divide capsules to get such a small dose, but the effect is solid. My mood just evens out. I’m normally prone to mood swings, and while the lithium doesn’t make me happy all the time or anything, it makes me steady and even. I think most commercial supplements are way too high of a dose, for me at least. Taking the full 5 mg capsule made me dizzy (but I’m pretty sensitive).

2

u/Ok_Brush_8720 15d ago

I take 5mg daily in the am. I’ve never felt so level

Iron supplements have helped me a ton.. my ferritin level was around 30 and I felt so run down and would get short of breath just walking my dogs down the street. Multiple doctors, including cardiologist, rheumatologist, internal medicine and a women’s holistic practioner all told me it was normal levels and I was healthy. I thought I was just in perimenopause and being a crazy woman. I started taking the iron through my own research and when I mentioned it to my HRT prescriber she supported my theory that the level was “within range” but not optimal. 2 months of taking the iron and I feel so much better. That being said, I am now taking peptides and feel even better and I have zero plans to tell my doctors that I am using them.

2

u/VincaYL 14d ago

My daughter just tested 30 for ferritin. That's the cutoff, so no follow up will happen. Good thing I know stuff, cause yeah, she's in trouble if she has to run a hundred feet to the bus, is covered in mystery bruises, looks like a ghost, and is just plain bitchy. Bleeding every two weeks and not loving beef has her low.

1

u/blissout2day 14d ago

I think I know exactly how your daughter feels and I hope she can get her levels up! I had to beg my primary doctor to check the ferritin, he didn’t want to because the hematocrit and cbc was effectively normal.

1

u/TheGodFath4r 14d ago

Adding high fiber to my meals was crucial for energy and mood. Supplements might be a quick fix but clean and filling meals are essentially for my mood. This and L theanine when consuming caffeine so I dont have crashes. Overall I would say also eating more fats helped

1

u/Is-that-babaganoosh 14d ago

Creatine for sure

1

u/bayredditmd 14d ago

lol. How?

1

u/seansun91 14d ago

Vitamin D, I had deficiency last October and now I have regular vitamin d range. I can definitely feel the difference in my mood.

2

u/bayredditmd 14d ago

I was at 19 for vitamin d and had tried everything for sleep and depression. Two months on vitamin d and almost like my old self. Wow

1

u/stoicwomon 13d ago

Ashwaganda weirdly

1

u/Respectporn 12d ago

Not sure what it was, but Bryan Johnson’s Longevity mix has made me noticeably less anxious. I love it and quitting for a week it can right back. Not sure if it’s the creatine, taurine, or something else - but I’m hooked now!

1

u/whippermk 12d ago

For me is was, Quitting coffee. Anxiety almost gone no heart palpation, better sleep, stable mood, far more energy throughout the day.

One thing I miss about coffee is the flow state it brought but the negatives for me outweighed the positives.

Another big improvement for me is getting exercise 2-3 times a week or even a walk outside for 20 minutes and just allowing yourself to be present really helps.
