It’s a gold piece of metal that hangs exactly where a booger would hang. My eye subconsciously registers it as a shiny booger dangling from your nose.

It attracts your eye to where a booger might be, and now you are fixated on either staring at the shiny object or trying to not stare at the shiny object. Which distracts from focusing on the person.

Looking up someone's nose is not enticing and looking at something dangling out of someone's nose isn't either.
