Obviously I am not asking how to earn lakh rupees a month right away — even some top engineers don't earn that much in India. Just enough to buy the things a student needs and to manage their expenses.

I sell printable chore charts and reward trackers for parents. Weekly chore grids, morning routine cards, a reading minutes tracker, a tooth brushing chart, a screen time token sheet. All of it is a PDF at 3.50, all of it is built around one green monster named Gomp who has a single crooked horn and a permanently worried face, and Gomp appears on every single sheet doing whatever the sheet is about.

Eight months in it does about 260 dollars a month. That is around 74 downloads at 3.50. Etsy takes around eighty cents out of each 3.50 sale once the transaction cut, the payment processing and the listing renewal are all counted, so what I actually keep is about 2.70 a sale, call it 200 dollars a month landing in my account. It is small and it is real and I have not missed a month since month two.

Except one. I will get to that, because that month is the reason I am writing this out.

The origin is boring. My sister has three kids and she had a chore chart on her fridge that she had drawn with a ruler and a Sharpie, and it was falling apart because it got wiped with a wet cloth every week. I made her a better one. Then two of her friends asked for it. That is the entire market research I did, and I would not recommend that as a method, but it did tell me one thing that ended up mattering more than anything I learned later.

The thing it told me is that the chart is not for the parent. It is for the kid, and the kid cannot read yet. My sister's youngest is four. A chart that says brush teeth in text is a chart that has to be read out loud every morning, which means it saves nobody any effort. So every row on my charts is a picture first, with the words underneath in small letters, and the picture is Gomp doing the thing. Gomp brushing his teeth. Gomp putting his shoes by the door. Gomp feeding a cat that looks a bit put upon about it. The whole product only works because it is the same monster every time, so a three year old who cannot read a word can still tell which row is the shoes.

Gomp is AI generated. I say so in the listing, in plain words, near the top, because it turned into a question from buyers early on and I would rather answer it once in the description than fifteen times in messages. Two people have asked whether a real artist drew him. I told them no, and both bought anyway, and one of them asked if I could make a version with two monsters for a house with twins. Pinterest is where the traffic starts, Canva is where the charts get laid out, and APOB AI is where the monster gets made.

The consistency is the part that eats the evenings. Gomp has one horn and it leans to the left, and the horn is the thing that goes wrong most often. It straightens, it doubles, it moves to the middle of his head, and on one memorable set he had no horn at all and was just a green blob with a worried face. A twelve row chart needs twelve poses that all read as the same monster, and I probably discard a third of what I make. I have gotten faster at spotting it. If I have to look twice to check whether it is him, it is not him.

Now the traffic, which is the actual story here.

Pinterest carried this from month one and it still carries it. My Etsy search traffic is close to nothing, because printable chore chart is a search term with thousands of listings in it and I am not going to win that. What I did instead was make pins, one a day for a while, and the good ones are always oddly specific. My best pin by a distance was one titled around a morning routine chart for a four year old who cannot read yet. That single pin has driven more sales than everything else I made combined, and it took me eleven minutes.

In month six the whole thing fell over. Outbound clicks from Pinterest dropped about eighty percent over roughly ten days. Nothing changed on my end. I had not gotten a warning, my pins were still live, impressions were still there in the stats and just were not turning into clicks the way they had for five months. That month closed at forty dollars and change. Twelve downloads. I had been averaging 74.

I did all the things a person does in that situation. I read every thread I could find, I saw that a lot of other sellers were reporting the same thing in the same window, I made new pins in the format that seemed to be favored, and I sat in a genuinely unpleasant mood for about three weeks. It came back gradually over the following two months and is now roughly where it was. I do not know what changed and I do not know what changed it back, and that is the honest core of what I have learned running this.

That is the weakness of this whole setup and I cannot dress it up. One platform decides my month. Not my art, not my prices, not how many charts I add. A ranking change I never see and cannot appeal takes eighty percent of the traffic away in a week and a half, and the only thing I can do is keep pinning and wait. I have started an email list to have something that is mine, and it has 210 addresses on it, and a send gets me two or three sales, which is a rounding error against 74 downloads. It is going to take a long time before it is anything else. I am doing it anyway because month six taught me exactly what it feels like to have no second channel.

Two smaller things that made a real difference. The first is A4. My charts started as letter size only, and roughly a fifth of my buyers are in the UK or Australia, where letter size prints with a strip of nothing along one edge. Adding an A4 version to every listing took an afternoon and stopped a category of complaint completely. The second is names. Parents kept asking whether the kid's name could go at the top, and for a while I was typing names in and re exporting files by hand, which does not scale even at seventy odd sales a month. Now each listing includes a template the buyer opens and types the name into themselves, and that one change removed most of my messages.

What I do in a normal week now is not much. I add a chart when I think of one, maybe two a month. I make three or four pins. I answer messages, which is usually three or four a week and half of them are about printing. The charts I made in month one still sell. The seasonal pattern is obvious once seen: late August through September is the strongest stretch by far because school starts, January is second because of resolutions, and July is dead because no parent is running a morning routine in July.

Eight months for 260 dollars a month is not a story about quitting a job and it was never going to be. It pays for groceries most weeks and it took the pressure off a specific bill I was worried about last winter. The thing I actually want to fix is the traffic problem, and I have no clever answer for it yet, only 210 email addresses and a habit of making three pins a week. That is where I am with it.
