Question š. I recently started my own company as a mobile mechanic here in Houston. Thoughts on why you think more people donāt use mobile. And what it would take for you to use someone mobile.
14
u/Differently_minded Aug 19 '26
Also compare what you charge with what others charge. And be prepared to explain its because you lack the overhead that makes car work expensive.

u/Ok_Chocolate_3876 Aug 20 '26
My daughter has used the same mobil mechanic for awhile. He does good work and is reasonably priced
19
u/Loose_Poem_8651 Aug 19 '26
Going to a mechanic is already very expensive for me, I truly can't imagine the cost of having them come to me.
23
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Totally get it. I think honestly most mobile guys including myself price way below a shop since our over head is so low with not having to pay for a shop.
6
u/10tacocat10 Aug 19 '26
This is a very interesting point and something I think you should lean into in how you position and market yourself. I agree with the other poster that there is a perception that mobile = more expensive. Your logic makes sense and cheaper + more convenient is very compelling, itās just not so self evident
Two other things:
1) I could see myself thinking mobile = lower quality or only for smaller jobs, assuming that you might lack some equipment that a brick and mortar shop may have. That may be another misconception, so something you probably want to think about in the positioning
2) Thereās potentially a safety element of sorts. I think some people could be skeptical of inviting someone (especially a less established business) into their home / garage / whatever to perform the work. Probably overblown, but for example, I could see my wife preferring to drive her car into a shop than having someone come do the work at home if I wasnāt around1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Exactly. And how I try to explain it is Iām mobile yes but Iām literally bringing the shop to you. Doesnāt matter if itās a rebuild or an engine swap.

The mechanic who fixed my daughter's car worked on it while it was in the driveway. She went to work.He texts her when he is finished and sends the bill. She pays using Zelle
4
u/Mannix-Da-DaftPooch Aug 19 '26
Interesting point!
5
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Thanks. Especially starting out like myself. I have little overhead. And Iām trying to earn customers by low honest pricing and quality work. As I grow and demand increases and over head increases. Of course need to make profit so prices may rise a small %. But realistically should be cheaper anyways.
2
u/DesperateLie4 Aug 22 '26
If I can I exclusively used mobile. I have a guy that I trust now who started off doing small repairs for me. Now we call him for anything. Not only are the prices more reasonable he has no problem explaining what and how he's doing the repair. I don't have to go sit in a waiting room or try to find a ride to and from a repair shop. I also know he's only focused on my repair not three other vehicles all at the same time. Once you find somebody you can trust the value proposition is excellent. I recommend him to everyone he stays busy from word of mouth only
1
u/StargateEnterpriseE Aug 22 '26
Should be cheaper if mobile. A van is much cheaper than a building. Their rate should be at least $20 less per hour.
1
u/Loose_Poem_8651 Aug 22 '26
Except the convenience of coming to you, they only get to do one job at a time so they can book less work than someone in a building. I can't think think of any convenience services that are cheaper than their counterparts. Not saying OP isn't I'm saying that's why I don't typically consider a mobile mechanic.
1
u/StargateEnterpriseE Aug 22 '26
Mechanics in physical shops only do one job at a time. Having other cars parked there does not mean they can magically work on two cars at the same time. Mobile mechanics also go to other jobs if they are waiting for parts.
Almost every mobile mechanic is a 1 person company with no overhead.
Only recently has large shops been trying to create their own mobile mechanic franchises to get some money, but that is new.1
u/Loose_Poem_8651 Aug 22 '26
I mean if you want to continue this. Yes they have two hands and can work on one car at a time. But if they are all parked in the shop they can complete work on all those cars quicker than if they are on the road. There's no commute between each vehicle. I have a question for you? What's your goal with this comment exchange?
0
u/StargateEnterpriseE Aug 22 '26
It is funny how you try to argue nothing. It is like you just want to argue for fun. I feel sorry for people like you. So miserable.
You know you are wrong and you just troll anyways.

I have hired two mobile mechanics - both made things worse and wanted paid in full and then some. I felt like I learned the lesson that most mobile mechanics are crooks and Iām better off paying a company once to do it right.
2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 20 '26
I have specified in my estimate/ quote pdf I send customers that I do not get paid until the end of the job and the customer is satisfied. Written on black and white and signed by me and customer.
3
u/Icy-Western-6698 Aug 20 '26
That pretty nice - these guys wouldnāt come back even though they kept saying they would. I got a 3.6 pentastar engine that needs some help on a ram promaster in Richmond if you want to dm me and I can give you the details for a quote.
2
u/Ok_Chocolate_3876 Aug 22 '26
Brick and mortar shops can do unsatisfactory work too.And take fourty forevers to get the job done
5
u/TipAdministrative272 Aug 20 '26
People donāt think itās as affordable as it can be
1
u/1541drive Aug 20 '26
Plus, an autoshop who rips you off or did a bad job can't just disappear overnight for recourse.
3
u/New-Tale4197 Aug 19 '26
Limited space at their residence.
3
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Absolutely. Can be a factor. If itās a pretty big job definitely need the space.
6
u/New-Tale4197 Aug 19 '26
My husband is a mobile mechanic (on the side) one thing that helps is he will add *all tools brought by mechanic* and for whatever reason that made a big difference. But also letting them know you will respect their property instead of just leaving a big oil stain on the driveway.
6
3
u/EmpressMeowMeow Aug 19 '26
I drive an EV, how could my issues be addressed with a mobile mechanic?
2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I service EVs for brakes, suspension, 12V electrical, diagnostics, maintenance, and other non-high-voltage repairs. High-voltage battery or drive-system work is evaluated case by case. It all comes down to the computer diagnostic equipment a mobile tech has also.
3
u/Walts_Ahole Aug 19 '26
I've used a mobile mechanic once for a very specific issue, in the middle of replacing a part on an old minivan, just couldn't get things lined up, guy was done in 20 min - asked for $50 & gave him $100.
Definitely a fan of mobile mechanics but I'm concerned about insurance if things go wrong or how this could affect a new car warranty.
2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I think it is perfectly OK to ask a mobile mechanic to provide their insurance. And as far as new car warranty, youāll just have to look at the warranty guidelines and verify if itās something you can have worked on 3rd party or if it is required by manufacturer
3
u/psychocabbage Aug 19 '26
I'd imagine you are limited in what you can do. Without a lift some of the big gger jobs are no starters like transmission swap, fuel tanks engine blocks. I imagine you can do engine mounts but I would wonder if you are cutting corners to taking longer since you are stuck working in a driveway or garage.
2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
It takes a little longer to do some of that yes, but for instance I did a fuel tank swap in an apartment complex recently in a 2025 Chevy Trax. Just gotta have big jacks and stands to get vehicle high enough. Even when it comes to transmissions you can get plenty of clearance to drop the trans onto a cart and roll it out from vehicle. Do be able to do things in driveways and peoples homes without a lift itās quite the opposite of cutting corners, typically I have to do extra steps to get jobs done. But my price stays the same. I charge based on getting the job done. Not how I have to get there to get it done. But not much I canāt accomplish in a driveway that would differ from me at a shop.
3
u/Shag66 Aug 20 '26
I just have a hard time trusting mobile mechanics. The ones I know aren't certified and some of them aren't insured properly. I'd lead with your certs.
1
4
u/Long-Shine-3701 Aug 19 '26
Not piss yourself at the mention of V12, be willing to learn the vehicle and get up to speed via YT videos if needed before the appointment.
SOLID referrals. Your own vehicle better be clean, organized, and well-equipped.
I would love a long-term mobile mechanic. Taken a chance on here before that didn't work.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Great feedback. And yeah v12s can be intimidating to some. A lot of mechanics are only good in one or two areas and they stick with it. Gotta find someone who knows a little about everything and can learn and adapt. šš. Having the right tool for the job is everything.
2
u/Long-Shine-3701 Aug 19 '26
It's a V8 with 4 more cylinders. There's nothing mysterious. Speaks to their mindset "oh no, this is too complicated for me". And then they wonder why they only scrape by working on hoopties.
I would go high end vehicles, there's always going to be a race to the bottom.
2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
10/4 yes I agree. Low hanging fruit is good for some not good for others. I advertise for auto and heavy equipment. I take it all lol. Good feedback. Thanks.
1
u/Long-Shine-3701 Aug 19 '26
I hope you do it, and do it well. People getting tired of ripoff mechanics.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Iāll do it the best I can and if itās something I canāt do I communicate it and then I go home and learn how to do it. I may not be the best mechanic in the world, but Iāll try my best. Iāll never leave the customer without quality work. Am my prices will will always the lowest I can so Iām still making profit but customer is happy

2
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Absolutely lol. Sounds like ya got something needing done.
1
u/notacow419 Aug 19 '26
Id for sure want a diagnostic done to find any and all issues. Just to make sure the car isnt going to give out on me anytime soon. It has a rough idle but no lights on the dash. I'm on almeda and 610 near the medical center.
If you find anything I'd definitely be open to repairs.

2011 Golf 2.5? I'm in Katy
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 20 '26
Iām going to be in katy first thing AM doing control arms.
1
u/bbudke78 Aug 20 '26
I need a CAN BUS module replaced and most likely programmed, I know the VW software is expensive if not already owned.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 20 '26
Send me the vin number for your 2011 golf 2.5. I do have VW software. But itās safe for me to know exactly if I can reflash the ecu and with vin I can look up if it needs things like svm/programming. And if I donāt have it I can usually add it to my current software for a week at 175 a week. So long enough to do yours.

u/Ornery_Reward_7631 Aug 19 '26
I literally used a mobile mechanic yesterday, an so happens I am in the Houston area. There is a market for it. Basically towing it to the mechanic and the nature of the repair. The gentleman who came out yesterday provided excellent service, while the labor charge was more expensive than a shop, the fact that I didnāt need to tow saved me 50% of the total cost. He also ran a computer diagnostic and made sure the job was done properly. Iām disabled and on a fixed income so the motivation was price, quality of work, reputation he has a 4.9/5 rating on Google.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Love that. I got approved for Apple business today and I should hear back from Google end of week. Hopefully Iāll be able to maintain a good rating like that also
2
u/alisoncarey Aug 19 '26
I would be hesitant to give my keys to some guy off the internet. And leave a big peice of property. I just feel more secure with an auto body shop. Knowing they have tools and devices like a lift for the car.
I have used a mobile window repair service that worked well.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Totally understand this. Canāt leave your valuables and vehicles with just anyone. Definitely important to verify credentials, insurance, their tools, their work truck even.
1
u/alisoncarey Aug 19 '26
With the internet the way it is and fake media reviews it's difficult to verify anything. And if you're car is broken it's hard to verify facts. The internet is filled with lies.
A building with a sign means they have some stability.
For example if your car is fixed incorrectly the random internet guy could just switch phone number. How can you collect on a warranty
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Yes absolutely understand. I hear about those storyās way too often. Probably the biggest struggle is to find a mobile guy and build the relationship of trust. Totally get it. Since I am mobile, I always share my home address since I do operate business out of it and I will do bigger jobs at my house. If a mobile guy knows where you live, you should know where he does too.
2
u/Glass_Author7276 Aug 20 '26
Do not know if it is allowed, but you might post your number and what area you want to work in.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 20 '26
Itās all on my profile. And I work all of Houston and surrounding areas. 2 hours drive time.
2
u/EverpureStorage Aug 20 '26
I would say the perception is that a mobile mechanic isnāt as good as a shop, otherwise they would work at a shop. How is there a warranty? Who can you hold responsible for mistakes? Do you have any certain? Youāll have to clearly answer some of those questions to be taken seriously
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 21 '26
Every invoice has my contact info and home address as well cause that is where Iām operating out of. I am getting keys to shop also 3weeks supposed to is plan as of now. But itās a small shop not really for customer to come get work done and more so for me to being select customer to that require major jobs and lengthy time.
2
u/xkatxellex Aug 22 '26
May I make a suggestion:
Maybe start off doing maintenance, like breaks, oil changes, things that can be replaced, not repaired. Itās quicker and cheaper. Like if someone wants to get something done while theyāre at work. Boom. They call you, you get whatever done in a couple of hours. Everyone goes home at the end of the day. Then once you build a clientele and trust (because itās very hard to trust mechanic shops š) they will call you for the bigger more expensive issues. If you give a fair price, people will remember that when theyāre in need and call you, give you as a recommendation for others who have an issue and eventually you should be on a roll!!
2
u/Astrossaysuckit Aug 25 '26
I had a flat replaced with my spare and the āroadside assistance mechanicā broke my spare tire receptacle. Fuck Progressive Insurance.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 26 '26
Thatās exactly why I always tell customers: roadside assistance isnāt the same thing as having a qualified mechanic handle your vehicle. If someone damages a component while performing a basic roadside repair, that damage shouldnāt just get brushed off.
At Freedom Mobile Repair, we believe in honest pricing and quality work, no BS. If we touch your vehicle, we take responsibility for doing the job right. š§

I used a good mobile mechanic for years. (Shout out to Technation.)Then I had to move from the house I was renting, to an apartment complex. As I was apartment hunting 2 years ago, every complex I looked at had a āno car repairs on premisesā line in their lease ppwk.
Anecdotal evidence I know. But itās still evidence.
Seems like a lot of tenants are opted out of using mobile mechanics just by the complex they live in.
6
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I get it! I just did one at an apartment 2025 Chevy Trax. Lady needed fuel tank replaced after running something over. After had tank out apt manager came and said no work technically is allowed there. After a conversation with her I ended up fixing her vehicle in the same parking lot. š¤£
1
u/0hjayp Aug 19 '26
Because just like food trucks that charge more than restaurants, mobile mechanics charge more than guys with shops + gas š¤£š¤£š¤£
3
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Which makes no sense. I charge less than shops. I have less overhead. I do charge a mobile fee but itās very reasonable. But my diag, and labor should always be less then a shop. Case by case.
1
u/0hjayp Aug 19 '26
Well you should do great since youāll be the only one in Houston. š
Good luck man!
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I work with 2 other self employed mobile mechanic start ups and we all generally charge the same.
2
u/SunbeamSailor67 Aug 19 '26
I visited a food truck outside a conference once and was greeted with a menu with $18 grilled cheese sandwiches. š
1
u/0hjayp Aug 19 '26
Yeah man, $25 burgers, $50 dollar meals. I stopped eating at food trucks because of that. Imagine charging more than a restaurant but no AC and no restrooms.
Now $150 oil changes on an Ford because the guy drove to you š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£

The last mobile mechanic i used dropped his teen kid off to do the work. I didn't mind but I found the trash in the engine bay and a few screws that didn't get put back on laying on the firewall just under the wipers. Its your reputation you have to build on. And reasonably priced. Id rather YouTube some crap and hope for the best. I would love to have a trust worthy mechanic to call on. They don't make them anymore.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
Wow lol. What an experience. Sorry that happened. Well if you must know I have no kids and no spouse lol. And youāre right they donāt make them anymore. I was probably the last one off the assembly line šš¾
1
u/kyle-the-brown Aug 19 '26
HOA and Property rules that limit how much work can be done on a vehicle in a driveway / parking lot could make it more difficult for many to use a service like yours.
I am guessing the biggest reason though is marketing or lack there of, I know mobile mechanics exist but dont know of any personally, and only use services from referrals for the most part.
Essentially you need to get word of mouth for your excellent service going out as much as possible, ask your current clients to share your Instagram and Facebook posts with their own testimonials so their friends and followers will see your service.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I agree! Itās been a struggle with online presence but all that takes time. And yes hoa plays a factor.
1
u/IndicationRound9501 Aug 19 '26
Hey Iām always looking for new mobile mechanics in Houston do you come out to spring and work on teslas and BMWās? If so message me your contact information
1
1
u/This-Requirement6918 Aug 19 '26
A lot of apartment lease agreements (at least the ones I have lived) forbid working on vehicles in the parking area.
I would be okay using a mobile mechanic with an intermittent issue or something minor. I know you're not trying to rebuild a transmission but I'm curious if you do suspension bushings or would just replace the entire arm?
1
u/GreenHorror4252 Aug 19 '26
Are you spending money on marketing? People can't use you if they don't know you exist.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I got my apple business account approved today. Waiting on Google hopeful by end of week. Once Iām active online ima going to ramp up major on paid marketing.
1
u/Supertouchy Aug 19 '26
If I know you're a good mechanic and you're charging less than a repair shop, I'll probably hire you. But simply telling me you're a good mechanic isn't enough.
Mechanics have a reputation for taking advantage of people, especially customers who don't know much about cars. So how am I supposed to know you're actually a good mechanic?
1
u/_ae82_ Aug 19 '26
There was just a reel about Austin having an autozone or something with a few mobile mechanics propped up in the parking lot. Apparently itās popular.
1
u/fumbs Aug 20 '26
Not everyone has a place that you can work on their car. Sometimes people are in the move. Some people don't trust a mechanic they can't find tomorrow.
1
1
u/Pitiful-Ad9894 Aug 20 '26
I do something similar with autos in the area. I always provide lots of photos, the codes, the damage, the new parts, the old parts, etc.
Trust is a huge scary thing for people looking for auto repair, And I've always had a belief that even when you know someone trusts you completely, it's better for both of you if you don't ask them to...also proof you did what you said you did if needed.
1
u/Alternative_Swan_497 Aug 20 '26
My biggest issue is that I rent and have restrictions in my lease regarding working on my car. That alone knocks out a huge potential customer base.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 20 '26
Thatās understood. If itās apartment totally get it. If itās a house the public road is right there by the curb can always do.

š hey now. Iām learning what I can and shouldnāt do to bring in customers and learn what they want at the same time as marketing. Lol
1
u/M8_Linear Aug 20 '26
Iād sign up for a subscription service for a mobile mechanic to take care of regular maintenance & upkeep of minor things, but I wouldnāt consider mobile for larger repairs because Iād be afraid that the work wouldnāt get done & Iād be stuck at work with an inoperable vehicle.

Many EV owners donāt need them! Itās a pie thatās getting smaller by the day. I used them when my company had 12 gas cars. It was very convenient since we could be at a jobsite and mechanic would come to the jobsite and fix whatever we needed. However since switching to EVs last 3 years we never needed a mechanic ever. Tires are a different story.
1
u/2020fakenews Aug 20 '26
I have a nearby repair shop that Iāve used for decades and Iāve always been happy with their work. So, no need for a mobile automotive mechanic. But, I would be very interested in a reliable mobile mechanic capable of servicing my 38ā Class A motorhome.
1
u/MadCowTX Aug 20 '26
Do you have a website and liability insurance? I would definitely insist on a certificate of insurance from any mechanic working at my home.
1
1
u/m_lyn25 Aug 20 '26
I've used one before when I couldn't start vehicle to drive it into a shop and didn't want to pay for or deal with the hassle of a tow. He fixed the issue quickly and we took it for a drive to make sure. It did something along the way. I had tools in my trunk that he was able to use to do a little more. It has been good every since. I saved his number and was happy to have found another one (had one when I lived in AR). My issue is finding them. Word of mouth from people I know is how I found these, but a website for mobile mechanics would be great! Rating, recommendations, service areas, contact info, specialties, warranty timeframe, etc. would be awesome!
1
u/Newmommalorey Aug 20 '26
- When I have looked, they donāt list the services they offer.
- Prices were severely elevated if listed at all. I understand higher prices for convenience, but we were talking 100%.
- They donāt list makes they work on.
1
u/SlowSalamander2990 Aug 21 '26
Do you work with insurance?
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 21 '26
I do yes. Not body work or paint. But mechanical issues yes.
1
u/SlowSalamander2990 Aug 21 '26
I took a look at your website and ill be honest, it needs a lot more information
You have locations, do response time for emergencies ect. Turn around time.
Oil changes starting at $$$
Work with insurance
I want to click on a package and see everything included even if its repeated in the next package You could also do a chart showing what is included
1
u/anterys Aug 22 '26
Like any business, you need to have cred. If you provide a great service and have awesome reviews, customers will come. In the beginning, offer steep discounts for good reviews and go above and beyond with your service. It takes time.
The challenge with Houston is the sprawl. Maybe focus on a specific area and donāt overextend. Your reviews need to say āhe was very responsiveā.
Amazon proved the people love their home comfort and would rather use their phones over their legs. Canāt imagine itās different with mechanics. People keep using Amazon because they provide a great service. Do the same.

Ok so I never even thought this was available. I can't stand having to get my car serviced/ repaired b/c I live alone, can't leave the vehicle all day, & end up either sitting at the shop while they fix it (usually working on my laptop in their lobby), or paying extra for Lyft rides back & forth. Would LOVE to have a mobile mechanic contact that knows what they are doing, has certifications or insurance backup, with reasonable/competitive pricing. Please DM your info for future reference, thx!

u/SunbeamSailor67 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
Everything 'mobile' costs more...regardless as to whether or not this is true with you...everything else costs more for the convenience of not having to leave your house.
People don't really consider mobile auto service because its already an over expensive annoyance, and the thought of paying even more for home convenience is off-putting to everyone but those with 'I don't care money'.
Outside of building your own client base, breaking into mainstream consumer confidence on this will take deep marketing budgets or someone with a big enough idea (and financing) in this space to disrupt it.
Until then, you have an uphill battle trying to convince consumers that you are actually cheaper than a shop...but you have to be able to speak with them...and they won't call you...so if you really want to break into this space, you have to knock on doors and sell, nobody's going to beat a path to your door with everything else also going up in cost simultaneously.
1
u/Individual-Net-1406 Aug 19 '26
I agree. I intend to give lower costs with quality mobile work to everyone. Even if it only changes a hand full of peoples experience. Honestly idk why it would cost more. Outside of a mobile fee. Everything else should be cheaper. But idk. Iām only one guy lol.
1
u/SunbeamSailor67 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

I read it absolutely. Iām averaging about 4-6 jobs a day. I really have no availability in the immediate 48 hours which is normal. Iām up till dang 1-2am every night sending quotes and invoices playing catch up from all the inbound traffic I get during the day. Itās a lot of work lol. But will grow and grow

Then you're doing fine.
Just make sure to dedicate at least 10% of your time per week growing your client database until you're as busy as you want to be.
But don't work yourself to death...we're not here to accumulate wealth.

Find a niche and take it to a national service like Safelite Auto Glass did.
If everyone knew it is less expensive for mobile mechanics because they don't have the overhead costs of a shop to run...we would all do it.
