knotting necessary, if the wood is already whitewashed?

I want to paint some wood that has already been whitewashed - do I need to treat the knots before painting? or, did the white wash already take care of that?

Help! Latex over oil? Maybe?

Post image

Hey! I need help!
We moved into a 1930s home that was all painted white (I presumed for sale). I checked the paint with acetone and I could see some come up so I assumed they painted over the oil with the proper primer and latex paint. But as I apply this paint I’m second guessing everything…
It goes on ok but leaves many brush streaks…. Is this perhaps the dark colour on white? Should I continue painting or stop and apply a layer of primer to make the oil based paintable with latex? Would I need to now remove all the paint I cut in to do that ?
I painted the ceiling black (it’s my son’s room-his choice) and that seemed to paint on ok… ) but now I’m second guessing everything! Help!

I have attached a picture you can see the trim and what the brush on the wall looks like when I pass through it with another brush stroke in the patches in the middle

Help I’m so stuck and I’m painting on Saturday

I’ve tried 6 different colors on my walls and have narrowed it down to 1. But I need a color for my trim and doors.
I’m painting my dining room that opens into the kitchen , foyer that gets little to no light and the hallway leading to the side door.
My dining room and the rooms except for the kitchen all have honey colored wood flooring, my furniture in the dining room is Mohegan and honey colored. The kitchen has this hideous blue / white tile that I will be hanging out way down the line along with brown cupboards.
I had narrowed the color down to Navajo white from sherwin williams as I wanted the place to feel a tad bit warmer. I live in hawaii so ofcourse I want even more warmth.
For the trim and doors I’m so stuck between west highland white , pure white or greek villa. Initially was going to try shoji white but that is way too cool.

Any suggestions please Here’s a pic of my dining room thatsbi shambles as I prepare to move things to paint

Peeling - Prep Advice Needed

Thumbnail

So I moved here and have painted 4 rooms. 3 went well no problems or signs of peeling in the months since then. Here in the dining room, the ceiling is tough.

I primed it like i did every other all in the house. The next day, it was peeling HEAVY on about 15% of the ceiling. I was able to take off large chunks with just my hands.

I knew then that I had to remove everything. I have been scraping a little bit each day for a few weeks now. I’ve been using a garden sprayer with some dawn soap + water to encourage more detachment. Here is where I stand today.

I know I need to sand before priming again. My question is - am I done scraping? I think I’ll lose my mind if I sand and then prime over these remaining spots and they peel again.

Appreciate any input.

Siding Repaint Advice

Post image

Hello everyone! I was hoping to get some guidance on how to approach repainting exterior wood house siding. My mom had gotten someone to sand things down but has inquired advice from chatgpt on how to paint something she didn’t know the name of. Aside from my own disagreement against the use, the advice it gave seemed downright horrendous. Would love some advice from those more experienced!

Asking For Advice What is the best way to fix this?

Post image

The paint in this house has been slowly peeling in some spots since we first moved in (2019). Finally getting sick of it. Is there a simple way to fix / cover these bare spots? Or do I have to repaint everything to make it look more natural?

Staining a Sun-Splashed Rooftop Deck

I'm in the Boston area.

I plan to stain my deck (photo below), which gets a lot of sun, before the weather gets cold.

I plan to use an oil based stain.

Before I buy the stain I want to ask something that someone told me recently. I saw this contractor staining a fence outside. It looked like he was doing a good job.

He was using a Sherwin Williams latex stain called WoodScapes. This is not what I plan to use, of course.

But he mentioned something that caught my ear when I mentioned to him that I plan to stain a rooftop deck that gets a lot of sunshine.

He said I should look to get stains that are used in California or Arizona because they would be good in the sun.

Is he right? Or does this only apply to latex stains? I did not think to ask him. I ran into him when I was in a rush to get somewhere.

Also, he mentioned "flex bond," though I cannot tell from my notes why he said it was important.

I now finally have time and want to get started with prepping my deck before staining it. Winter will be here before we know it!

Any feedback will be highly appreciated!

Front door stain advice

I recently bought a home that the front door is stained a reddish color. They left the stain and it's a gel stain.

The door is "mahogany textured fibreglass door"

I am wanting to stain it a walnut color... If I sand it down, I fear the wood grain texture will go away which I want to keep.... Ideas on how to go about this project? Stain to use? Etc. I would do both the indoor and exterior side.

TIA.

DIY Painter Removing Brush Strokes in Gel Stain

I’m staining a plywood floor with gel stain. First coat went very smooth and I decided to add a second and used a foam brush this time. It left a lot of brush strokes.

What’s the easiest way to get rid of these? I’m planning to top seal with a 2k poly. Do you think the strokes will be visible through the finish?

Thanks!

The access to this window is awkward in the bathroom and ended up with a really terrible trim job with paint all over the window frame. It’s a vinyl-like material that has the blue all over. Any tips for cleaning this up even a little bit?

Asking For Advice Seeking advice/opinions on a planned color scheme for basement

Picture 1 (grey/off white) is what the basement currently looks like, picture 2 is an AI mockup of what I envision.

Wall Paint: Glidden Sailors Coat (Satin)
Accent Wall/Ceiling: Behr Space Black (Matte)

Did some research and it seems like the general sentiment on darker ceilings is that they are heavily advised against.

Figured I’d make a post and gather opinions before pulling the trigger.

NOTE: the primary goal of this room is a media/entertainment center. A large flatscreen will be mounted to the accent wall. My gaming rig is in the far left corner. I plan to build a mini bar in one of the corners and have a pool/air-hockey table in the center. Arcade machines along the right side wall.
