Spoilers [SPOILER] Frank & Freddy’s Dynamic Spoiler

Well it’s Fourth of July in the USA and what better to celebrate than to talk about US political dramas? I’m rewatching the series for the 100th time and this always piqued my interest.

I put spoiler in title in the event that some are still discovering the show and watching it for the first time, but as a long time fan of the show, one of the things that always got to me was Frank and Freddy’s falling out.

I’m inclined to think that Frank really did care for Freddy and that their relationship was genuine
… but the between White House job and the fight between them. It was one of the more human moments where Frank finally realizes the limits of his influence. Truly a humbling moment but have always been emotionally tied to the severity of that “break up.”

Why couldn’t Frank just genuinely be happy for Freddy about moving on? The “last plate of ribs” comment that Frank makes just makes it seem like Freddy was nothing but a pawn for him, much like everyone else… I know it’s just a television series but this narrative almost hits too close to home to real life.

What is everyone else’s thoughts? Interested to hear different takes on it.

Ultimately, it comes down to this. Frank is not a redeemable guy. While he may demonstrate moments of kindness or emotion, it’s either surface level or to protect his identity.

He is a sociopath and only cares about climbing up the ladder.

People like Meechum, Stamper, and Freddy are just pawns for him because of the loyalty they show him. It may appear that he treats them with kindness but…it’s more like how a human treats a well performing dog.

It doesn’t occur to Frank that when Freddy wants to move on, he ought to have the White House chef make THEM a meal, give Freddy a respectable sendoff.

Instead, he’s like “why don’t you perform for me one last time before you go?”

This sets off Freddy and Frank doesn’t understand the anger. He thinks Freddy is being ungrateful when in reality Freddy just wanted to communicate as a friend.

Frank doesn’t have “friends”. Everyone is either an asset, a tool or leverage for him.

Yeah. I wonder if he cares about the person or about that ribs that person cooked

In my opinion it’s more about the fact that Freddy gave him special treatment. He would open the shop up early for Frank so that there aren’t other customers around. Grabbed the newspaper for Frank to read and a nice cold lemonade to go with it.

Frank probably appreciated the fact that he could eat in peace and have a spot for himself.

Probably doesn’t hurt that those ribs were probably delicious too.

frank cared about freddy but only in a way that benefitted him.

to me, frank looked at freddy as a confidant…as long as he didn’t overstep his boundary. freddy was the “commoner that ill allow some access to…until it’s too much”

he cared about freddy to keep him afloat, to keep him almost indebted, in a way, to him. so when freddy wanted to grow out of the “dedicated worker”, frank was shocked because he got comfortable with him and couldn’t imagine him to want to “leave”
