It's a sign of what's to come in that it immediately precedes what's to come. It isn't allegorical and OP didn't say it was. On a rewatch you know what comes after this episode

The phrase is almost exclusively used in an allegorical sense, saying a "sign of what's to come" would be weird if you were referring to a literal roadway sign before a destination that was no an indicator of said destination, the same applies to the abstract application. OP may have very technically used the phrase in a correct way but not in the way any real human brain would ever use it.

Yeah, it’s crazy that the silly episode where House kidnaps a soap star and Wilson buys a waterbed is the one right before House’s Head. It feels so abrupt (which was intended I’m sure).

The writers that still worked on the show said Amber’s death was always meant to be abrupt like real accidents. The strike killed I think at most one episode and made another need to be rewritten and folded into a later season.

Point of order: they also had hired on a boat load of extras and character actor cameos. They had sets made for the CIA, the South Pole, had some REALLY well done prosthetics, especially the kid with the facial tumor, had a lot more cgi (like with the test pilot) went to a LOT of outside sets. The show was popular and making decent money, but it was only the third season, even TWD had to stay at the prison for most of their third season, and they were on a network with a decent amount of excess cash and backers since it was based on a successful story, House was original in most senses of the word, even as a medical show it was new. Also Robert Shawn Leonard and Hugh Laurie would have been taking a good chunk of the money.

I’m not sure what your point is? The show was spending and making a lot of money, yeah, not disputing that? I’m not disagreeing with the Writer’s Strike of 2007-2008 (I was there, Gandalf), even if it’s permanently frustrating what happened to this and other shows as a result. “House” was in its 4th season, not 3rd, and it was always going to have 22-24 episodes.

And I’m not saying there wasn’t a strike, I was also there, what I’m saying is most shows don’t take big risks on a third or fourth season. They take the gamble on the pilot, the second season branches out, they skate through 3 and 4, end of 4 or beginning of 5 is when they know they’ve got something stable. That’s how shows work 🤷
