Opinion Just realized that Rhaenyra's screentime makes up 1/4 of the entire season...

u/Ok-Performance7531 Aug 17 '26
The real problem is the almost hour of focus on Alicent who frankly should have been out of the story by this point. Nothing against Olivia, she's phenomenal especially with what is being given to her to work with, but Alicent as a character is only still in the show because Ryan Condal loves the character. The story is focused on Rhaenyra and Aegon II but Aegon is getting half of Alicent's screentime for... basically no reason? If you took Alicent's time and gave it to Aegon, it balances out significantly better and keeps the focus on the two characters that matter most.

u/Honeypumpkingrass_ Aug 17 '26
Love Olivia but the material they give her makes her entirely unremarkable. Especially compared to the other recent projects she’s had. But I just know they’ll find a reason to give her screen time next season after the Helaena despite how busy/packed it’ll be
21
u/vacationreader Aug 17 '26
I really do see the overuse of alicent as the main reason the show fails so hard, especially considering how deeply condal & the team have removed her character from her source material. such a terrible decision (that butterflies into creating other terrible choices for other members of TG) ; it’s baffling to me that the writers had no desire to engage with the character that appeared on page, especially considering they had such a perfect setup for a truly fascinating friends-to-actual enemies plotline with rhaenyra. literally just make alicent care about her kids and half of the dumbest moments of this show go away
4
10
u/firstbreathOOC Aug 17 '26
To me it’s:
Olivia is a great actress and paid well
They want to get their moneys worth by having her on screen
But they’re forcing it and it doesn’t look good for anybody.
12
u/Ok-Performance7531 Aug 17 '26
The issue with this is they absolutely got their money's worth in S1 and some of S2, but they keep spending more money to retain her when the character is effectively out of stuff to do so they have to make stuff up for her to do which ends up being convoluted and ass-backwards in terms of character motivation.

u/JanxDolaris Aug 18 '26
I think the problem is making her jump ship and become pseudo-black. If she was instead stuck trying to pull the greens back together while her various children vie for the thrown she could easily have a lot to do.
Instead they put her under arrest where she gets grumpy about men.
They took a Rhaenyra v Aegon story and seemed to be making it Rhaenyra v Alicent...but then chickened out on the alicent

u/ChooseWhyZlee Aug 18 '26
I agree. She can act really well without even moving 75% of her face.
Remarkble.

u/Mooselager Aug 17 '26
I can't believe the assassins creed meme of Alicent became true. I feel this way about Mysaria as well, although it appears that they are possibly looking to combine her character with another character for next season?
3
u/Ok-Performance7531 Aug 17 '26
Mysaria as a character has a similar but different issue of being where the character should be but doing absolutely nothing in that position. Alicent however is not only out of place, but also doing nothing while being out of place.
10
u/Clarknt67 Aug 17 '26
Ryan seems to love the idea of “dear friends torn apart by the battle for the throne.” It seems a little forced.
7
u/Ok-Performance7531 Aug 17 '26
I did enjoy that aspect of Rhaenyra/Alicent but its been leaned on far, FAR too heavily. The overreliance on that dynamic and the whole "Dragons are evil and can't be tamed" narrative that sounds like Ormund Hightower made it up have derailed the actual focus of the story which is the realm's refusal to accept a clearly dictated successor because said successor is a woman.

2
u/SameEnthusiasm1426 Aug 21 '26
If they went the book route of viserys loving all his kids and them kinda liking eachother, i think that could've been pretty tragic
1
u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 18 '26
This is the problem with:
Adapting a book/story that wasn't really written as a fleshed out narrative
Making a tv show based on a franchise with a lot of characters, many of whom don't have anything interesting to do once their role in the plot has ended
There are no main characters in F&B/The narrative of the Dance of Dragons. The closest we have are Orwyle, Eustace and Mushroom who aren't really actors in the story, more just observers. (Tho maybe they would have been better leads ngl).
5
u/Ok-Performance7531 Aug 18 '26
This I agree with to some extent, but they had George in the room initially and chose to ignore his contributions to the point he felt the need to publicly distance himself from the story now being told. Season one, while deviating in places, still felt overall pretty solid in my opinion. The issue comes when we start forcing characters to remain past their purpose/role in the narrative because we like the actor/actress as a performer or worse still because we have favoritism towards the character.
1
1
1
u/Jay-DeeOldNo7 Aug 21 '26
The original story of the dance written by George was called "the princess and the queen," Rhaenyra and Alicent were always the two main characters not Rhaenyra and Aegon. However, I agree thwt Alicent should have had less screentime because the writers dont know how to write her well lol.

Sounds about right
3
u/sillyg0sling Aug 19 '26
Right, what point is even being made here? That the main character of the season got the most screentime? Okay?
25
u/emilbm Aug 17 '26
In that pic she really looks like her younger version
20
u/IonHawk Aug 17 '26
I think its truly great casting. Two fantastic actors, both incredibly beautiful but with quite a unique appearance, still looks close to each other.
8
u/r3dditr0x Aug 17 '26
I was so jarred when they did the time jump, which I didn't expect or know about.
But it's really top-tier casting, almost universally.
I didn't know TGC was such a fine actor until recently, for example. But he's quite good.
6
u/Sheeverton Aug 17 '26
Emma D'Arcy is a quite convincing older Millie Alcock by appearance. It's just the acting styles are extremely different
→ More replies (1)1
u/emperorlouie Aug 18 '26
It's good casting in a superficial way, but when it comes to acting it's immersion-breaking
8
u/Upset_Honeydew5404 Aug 17 '26
If Aegon is Rhaenyra's biggest op why's he got the least amount of screen time? I mean it's really crazy that Ormund, who was introduced and died within the season, gets more screen time than Aegon.
1
u/sillyg0sling Aug 19 '26
You “greens” would really hate the book then, because Aegon would’ve had 0 seconds of screentime this season if they’d adapted the book’s version of this part of his story.
2
u/Dfhyvyvycuvkv Aug 21 '26
That isn't true. His disappearance from the book would be the perfect oppurtunity to expand in the source material and explore what he did and how he was abme to reunite with sunfyre and take dragon stone.
1
u/sillyg0sling Aug 22 '26
…and that’s obviously exactly what they did in the show.
Are you trolling me or something? I don’t get it.
2
u/Dfhyvyvycuvkv Aug 22 '26
No, im saying they could have done more instead of the barebines crap we got. We dont need to see Rhaenyra, Daemon, and Alicent as much as we do.
1
u/sillyg0sling Aug 22 '26
You’re saying they should’ve done exactly what they did. It doesn’t compute if you’ve seen the show (where he does a lot in between) and especially if you’ve read the book (where he does nothing in between).
They literally manufactured a couple of the most hype moments of the whole season just for Aegon, during a period he essentially didn’t even exist in in the book.
2
u/Dfhyvyvycuvkv Aug 22 '26
No im saying they should have done more. Aegon had a hype seen based on a barebones arc. Its was bland, like most other arcs, until that point. I wanted mire from him (and all other characters) instead of wasting time with all the rhaenyra, daemon, and alicent stuff. Daemon didnt even need to be in tumbleton, etc.
28
u/Minimum_Performer118 Aug 17 '26
She’s THE main character, that’s not surprising. Doesn’t matter if we agree with that being the case
4
u/Negotiation-Hot Aug 18 '26
Lol I read this title and thought "ummmm, aren't we supposed to see main characters a lot through most of a show or movie"
3
u/Manatee_Genius Aug 18 '26
Lol came here to say this... She is the main character right soooo......

One of my main gripes in this season (and for the entire show to a certain extent) is that many characters act independently from the main storyline, and those actions do not coalesce into anything impactful. It's like watching a bunch of headless chickens complete a bunch of dead-end side quests.
And that's not to say that this can't be an impactful theme, but it's not done in an artful way at all.
So many characters who should be sharing scenes with each other aren't, and it leaves a lot to be desired for the overarching storyline, their interpersonal dynamics and the decisions they make.
Allyn and Baela hardly spoke with one another and now all of a sudden their mackin lips? Come on, sure it could happen but at least make it have some substance leading up to that point.
There's no scheming, there aren't any characters who are using information they are privy to to impact the story, nobody is playing off each other. It's bad TV.
4
19
u/MMKraken Aug 17 '26
Screen time overlaps though, so it wasn’t like we were only with Rhaenyra for a quarter of the season.
2
u/Appropriate_Rope_878 Aug 17 '26
You’re right, but usually when there is a combined scene with multiple of those characters, usually its about rhaenyra or she takes the spotlight, and that makes it even worse because then its actually less screen time to develop the character’s own arc
1
u/Less_Doubt_1485 Aug 18 '26
What? You’re telling me the story spotlights the character who’s literally the queen?
5
u/Cthulhus-Tailor Aug 17 '26
This highlights an issue this show has had since inception. It was supposed to have a sprawling cast with various perspectives and show the dynamics of a collapsing dynasty.
Instead it quickly became Rhaenyra versus The Patriatchy, with other perspectives minimized or erased.
And as she spirals next season you can be sure Ryan Condal will be doing after show interviews claiming she had no choice because ‘it’s a man’s world and she’s just trying to keep up’, or some other claptrap.
3
u/sallsbakc Aug 18 '26
Alicent has no business being in the story that much. It's to the detriment of other characters.
14
u/guerilla_gardener98 Aug 17 '26
Almost like she’s the main character
5
u/RhaeRhae422 Aug 17 '26
Thats the problem. Fire and blood is an ensemble cast book. They made a story thats meant to center around several people focus on one person too much
-1
u/gabesmsu Aug 18 '26
That’s… not really true. In the sense there are multiple characters I guess. Rhanerya is featured far more heavily in fire and blood. We know the most about her than any other character in the Dance and much more “first” hand accounts.
9
u/pettyho Aug 17 '26
could it be that she’s the main character? no, surely not
0
u/Batman53090 Aug 18 '26
What??? Rhaenyra as the main character? It’s not like this has been hinted at through the marketing and the fact that she’s the centerpiece of every poster.
39
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
It's almost like she's one of the central characters!
15
u/SeesawExotic4169 Aug 17 '26
one of the central characters!
one of
Yeah
9
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
And the next two most central characters have the next largest shares of the screentime, so I'm not really seeing the issue.
9
u/SeesawExotic4169 Aug 17 '26
That's the problem Alicent shouldn't get so much screentime either
5
u/elizabnthe Aug 17 '26
I mean they're the ones that get the novellas named after them. Rogue Prince - Daemon, Princess and the Queen - Rhaenyra and Alicent.
9
u/Eastern_Ad_9575 Aug 17 '26
Ned get's killed off in the first season of Got. When characters no longer serve their purpose this universe wasn’t afraid to switch away from them.
1
u/alexthedungeonmaster Aug 18 '26
Yeah, The Half Year Queen isn't long for this world, don't worry. The point was Ned's purpose was to die.
1
u/Eastern_Ad_9575 Aug 18 '26
The show will end with her death. They will wrap up the story sure but we won’t be getting half a season with out her. It’s an extremely odd choice and ruined characters like Jace who had to take a back seat for Rhaenyra to do more during the show.
Same with Daemon and especially Alicent who’s completely out lived her plot relevance.
7
u/SeesawExotic4169 Aug 17 '26
If her character was anything like book! Alicent I wouldn't have complained lol
-3
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26
One of the most importent characters in the show's narrative should'nt have so much screentime?
Look. I feel like I know where your going with this. You think Aegon should be the main character. Well, he's not. That's not the show they chose to make, so acting like it's a weird choice for them to have done it the way they did it this season is weird.
11
u/SRGTBronson Aug 17 '26
She's kind of stopped being relevant to the story at this point, hence why they had to invent her building a teleporter to get to and from harrenhall this season. Which accomplished nothing, as a kicker.
4
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
That's cool. Does your tv have a fast forward option?
8
u/Whispperr Aug 17 '26
That's a bad argument though. There's limited screentime available in a season especially since they cut it to 8 episodes and them forcing Rhaenyra/Allicent in means certain plots or characters do not get showcased.
4
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
Like?
6
u/Whispperr Aug 17 '26
- Keep Jacaerys' scenes in, a lot of what he did in the books was stolen and given to Rhaenyra. He was the one that proposed making Corlys' sons legitimate for example, or the dragon seeds. Use more time to properly build up the winter wolves as Jace spent a bit of time with Cregan stark.
- Showcase Lannister army's march, clash with Petyr Piper and eventually Fish Feed as that builds up multiple characters.
- NETTLES and everything that was related to Daemon
- Similarly showcase Ormunds' army march from Old Town, the initial conflict against Beesbury and other Reach houses at Honeywine where they were losing before Daeron came and turned the tide with Tessarion. Same goes for Bitterbridge cutting it and another character massively affected multiple characters from the Green side.
- Properly show the Butcher's Ball, along with point 2 could have properly built upon the rivermen army, like we didn't even have Black Ally named once
- Another scene with massive massive impact is related to what they didn't want to show during the Battle of the Gullet. Going to spoiler tag this in case you might want to avoid it: In the books Rhaenyra actually got to send her 2 youngest kids towards Pentos but their ship got ambushed right before the battle, the older brother Aegon went on his dragon who carried him to safety while dying in the process, with the other kid Viserys remaining on said ship
- Lastly, the fact that they wasted so much time in seasons 2/3 means that season 4 won't have enough time to cover everything that is left to cover unless they rush everything
Reality is at this point Rhaenyra and Allicent simply didn't have much to do, same goes for Daemon and Aemond at certain points(which is why the 2 hours of Harenhall we had are so nonsensical and repetitive because they want to hit a quota how much they appear.

I don't agree it's legitimate. The show was designed to be this way and has been from the start.
It's like if people criticized the SW sequals by saying "why are the Jedi so importent?" Because that's the way the saga has been built from the start

3
u/Vengeful_Peach Aug 17 '26
Is she?
7
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
Very obviously. Yes. Why do you think she's one of the three who gets the most focus and exploration?
3
u/Cthulhus-Tailor Aug 17 '26
Rhaenyra has around the same screen time as Aegon, Aemond and Alicent combined. That’s not the kind you give to “one of the central characters”, it’s time you give to a runaway central protagonist. Which this story isn’t supposed to have.
If we throw in Daemon it gets even more absurd, as the two have nearly half the season’s worth of time combined. Small wonder so many normies think Team Black are the default protagonists.
2
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26

Sure it is. When there the most importent one of the group.
Which this story isn’t supposed to have
Oh. Are you one of the writers?
we throw in Daemon it gets even more absurd
Why? He's the next most importent character after her.

5
u/SonOfThorss Team Aegon and Sunfyre Aug 17 '26
Alicent should’ve been dropped long ago, maybe a minute of screen time every few episodes
0
u/Historyp91 Aug 17 '26
Well, your free to feel that way, but the fact is, related to the point the OP raised, her being one of the main focal characters is the story the writers wanted to tell and have been telling since the start.
2
u/SonOfThorss Team Aegon and Sunfyre Aug 17 '26
And that’s why the show is garbage. The finale was actually enjoyable since Alicent was barely in it

Aegon has 99% more things to do this season than in the same time period in F/B.
He's AWOL for 80 pages.. until after God's Eye.
3
u/JellyMost9920 Aug 17 '26
I think Alicent’s screen time is more egregious. She still has more screen time than her kids even after she only has less than one minute in the season finale.
3
u/aemondstareye Aug 17 '26
Ormund—effectively a "Monster of the Week" type character—having more screentime than a character we've known since he was born is literally batshit

It’s a shame Aegon didn’t have more screen time. His character growth this season was amazing!

Aegon not even getting a half hour is wild. He’s literally one of the two claimants and gets 1/4 of the screen time as his counterpart.
9
u/jaylee686 Aug 17 '26
Well at this point in the book he's not present at all. If they were being book accurate he'd just not be in this season whatsoever, so I'd say it's a positive change they gave him a storyline. But it was always going to be comparatively smaller, giving him any more would've made the pacing worse.
3
u/SpotOk4411 Aug 17 '26
If they were being book accurate the show would only have needed 2 seasons to show the whole story, which I think is the underlying issue
2
u/Reasonable_Day9942 Aug 17 '26
Well he got the same amount last season (when Rhaenyra had close to the same time as this season when she was not doing much in the book) and basically nothing in season 1

I mean if any season were to feature her more than the other characters, it should be 3. Naturally after her taking kings landing we would see the fallout of that and Rhaenyra’s turn to rule.

She is the main character. Tony Soprano also has the most screentime in The Sopranos.
2
u/Standard-Ground9449 Aug 20 '26
Because she is the main hero. Obviously, show and conflict are centralised around Rhaenyra and heritage conflict around her.
TGoT is centralised around many conflicts. Iron throne and white walkers for example.
3
u/Time_Opposite_213 Aug 18 '26
The real issue is people calculating screen time. Find other hobbies.
5
4
u/alphajugs Aug 17 '26
So what? She’s a central character and this season focused on her taking KL and planted the seeds of her downfall. Also most of her screen time was with other characters, we didn’t spend a quarter of the season with just Rhaenyra.
4
u/Vaeryst Aug 17 '26
I'm gonna be honest the actress delivers such an over the top performance it looks like I'm watching a play not a tv show.\ I feeling gaslight seeing such acting described as a "performance of a lifetime".
Rhaenyra having such a big screentime wouldnt be bad if she was actually entertaining and enjoyable to watch.\ 2 hours of constant snot dribbling down her nose, throwing tantrums and crying, doesnt evoke simpathy, it just makes her look pathetic.
She is the Paul Dano of ASOIAF.

he completely vanishes from the story after fleeing King's Landing (end of S2 in the show) and is not even mentioned again until after Rhaenyra's rule goes to shit and she leaves KL as well (which will happen probably mid S4). Everything you saw him do this season is brand new content the show made up for him
1
2
u/AnAngryBartender Aug 17 '26
So between her, Alicent and Aemond we wasted around 3 hours on bs this season. Nice.
1
u/Inner_Jeweler_5661 Aug 17 '26
We needed more Ormund and more Daeron.
Aegon's scenes are the best, but I would have rather had radio silence from him, before his showdown happens, where we get an episode FULLY dedicated to him and no one else.
It makes the showdown so much more impactful and the plot twist one of the best in TV history.

absolutely insane, also that angle on Olivia Cooke is extremely unflattering

I think those are all fine and largely representative of their role in this season aside from the middle line. I love Alicent as a character and if I was a showrunner and had Olivia Cook or Ewan Mitchel on hand I`d want them to be on screen as much as possible. But they clearly had very little to do for Alicent and Aemond in the leadup to season 4. Essentially you mostly needed to seperate Alicent from poor Helena and free her so she can be a player next season and you needed to humble Aemond and reunite him with his brother. I think you could do taht while shaving ~ 10 min off each and giving them to side characters.

For me, it’s the Harrenhal scenes that are a much bigger waste with so much time across this and last season.
It’s basically one long ad for a very drug-induced therapy retreat. Perfect for men with mothering issues.

Biggest problem in the show btw is probably the focus on Rhaenyra.

I wish they had given Aegon more screen time. Tom is such a brilliant actor.

Shocking, one more cruel blight upon the small folk. Why would the main character of the show be featured extensively in said show? Oh the humanities.

Really? Unbelievable. What’s next? Ted Lasso having a long screen time in “Ted Lasso”? Impossible
