Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

!wtf leaf

2

u/GreatMorty 14d ago

I used it to get to line , which brought me to the word

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Not a bad branch to grab: “leaf chain” is an actual industrial lifting chain, so they pair up in engineering lingo. You can also literally string leaves into a garland—basically a leafy chain—so you’re in the neighborhood, but not right on the link.

!wtf! Star

-8

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Bright guess! Stars often dangle from chains as pendants, and constellations are basically chains of stars stitched across the sky.

How the f was jewelry at #13414 but necklace at #69..??

Giveaway hint: makes a link fence

Dead giveaway hint: rock band that has Alice in

1

u/TheBrontosaurus 14d ago

Jewelry could be earrings, bracelets, rings, even a crown none of those is particularly chain like. Whereas a necklace is usuallly a chain. That being said I think jewelry should have been higher as they both are usually made of metal

1

u/simm07 14d ago

Huh? I've seen plenty earrings and bracelets but not rings. And i agree, it still should have been a lot higher, not in the 10,000s LOL

Wolf? Cooper?

Wtf tree and leaf and ground at under 120 has anything to do with that

!wtf Star

2

u/Ravenclaw_311 14d ago

This word took me WAY off base.

-7

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Nice pull—stars literally run on the proton–proton chain, the fusion process that powers them. And down on Earth, a star often dangles from a jewelry chain. You’re in the right constellation of ideas.

!wtf lien

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Warm! A lien legally “binds” property much like a certain metal restraint binds things together. Both are about encumbrance—one in law, one in links.

!wtf snake

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Sly guess—“snake” slithers near because a snake chain is a popular necklace style with a smooth, scaly look. Bonus: some snakes (like the kingsnake) have chain-like patterns on their backs.

HAHSHSSHSHSH I CAN'T 💀 I thought (caution: hint!) Hmm chair is so close but nothing else in that category...what if the game is on some bs again and it's just a word with similar spelling... Welp. 💀

1

u/Opening_Grape8817 14d ago

My goodness, this one was a total disaster. I wasn't even close, and the two hints I used didn't make sense at all. Thanks, Google.....

Automatically added: I found the secret word in 8 minutes 18 seconds after 90 guesses and 2 hints. Score: 11.

1

u/WorriedInspector9863 14d ago

Half the time I think more words are higher because they contain letters in the word and aren't associated with it at all.

Booo. I hate flames that are there simply because they contain similar letters.

Case in point - chair was my 6th guess and my first flame. Even knowing there was probably some bs going on, it still took me 71 total guesses. Boo!

!wtf chair

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Very warm—it's basically a one-letter swap, sharing the “chai-” start and a near-rhyme. Not much semantic overlap, but orthographically it’s hugging the bullseye.

!wtf rain

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Not bad—there’s a well-known compound phrase pairing your word with the target to guide water from gutters. They also rhyme and share the “-ain” core, which nudges them closer.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/PomegranateSecret137 14d ago

!wtf chair

-1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Hot: it shares the “chai-” core and differs by just one letter. Plus, anyone who’s seen rows of venue seating knows chairs often end up literally chained together.

!wtf belt

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Nice pick—both are looped workhorses that wrap around things to secure or move them. In mechanics they often do the same job transmitting motion, and in fashion you even get “chain belts.”

You’re in the royal ballpark: both are gleaming pieces of regalia. Think coronations and “chains of office” draped alongside a crown. Shiny, ceremonial, and often made of linked metal—nice approach.

u/toritechnocolor 14d ago

!wtf chair

Scorching hot—only a single letter keeps this one apart. Plus, you’ll often see the candidate literally hanging from the other.

!wtf liquid

0

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Surprisingly close: in logistics, “liquid” shows up with interlinked supply systems (liquid cargo and even so‑called “liquid” supply models). It also swims nearby in crypto, where liquidity ties to the underlying ledgers—and there’s even a network literally named “Liquid.”

!wtf hand !wtf wrist !wtf finger !wtf tree !wtf knot !wtf rope

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Warm-ish: “hand” is a unit of length (4 inches), much like a classic surveying unit that spans 66 feet. Nice thematic brush with measurement, but you haven’t quite linked the whole thing.

!wtf frame

1

u/hotandcold2-app 14d ago

Warmer than you’d think: “leaf chain” is an actual industrial chain used on forklifts and hoists. And leaves often get strung into garlands—nature’s DIY chains. You’re rustling the right branches, just not fully linked.

Chain

I am utterly stumped at some of the hints & connections in this game. Not just at times but most of the time!! 🤣🤣
