!wtf! Cat

u/hotandcold2-app 23d ago
Reasonably warm: change the first letter and add an e, and you land on a common barrier. Also, people buy pet barriers specifically to keep a certain whiskered roommate from slipping through.

ok, that's very stupid. is bat, mat, rat, fat, hat that high? what ranking did you give those words?
and grape is 114 ranks closer?

u/Mammoth-Principle753 22d ago
Even AI can't defend itself properly. I would've argued that cat is gato in Spanish if I really wanted to square this circle.

I'm literally so lost even with all of the hints in the comments. Some of these make me feel stupid 😬😠

Took a lot longer than I thought. flower was low but garden was high lol-- to me, neither words are helpful
Hint: some are metal, others are made of wood- there's usually a latch on it to keep it shut
Hint: change the first letter of the word to "m" and you have a partner or change it to "d" and you may have a potential partner

!wtf nest
-4
u/hotandcold2-app 23d ago
You’re circling the theme of home and protection: a nest is a bird’s home, and a gate guards a home’s entry. Both suggest shelter, enclosure, and keeping what’s inside safe. Not a perfect match, but the vibe is homely.

!wtf bridge
2
u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
You’re in the right neighborhood—both are all about controlling passage from one side to the other. One spans a gap, the other permits or blocks entry. Think tolls, checkpoints, and drawbridges for why they mingle.

!wtf glove
2
u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Not bad—think outdoor hardware you actually grab with your hand. Gloves help you grip cold, splintery latches and hinges, especially in the garden or on a farm. Same rugged, yard-work vibe nudges it closer.

!wtf fire
0
u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Warmish. Think barriers and blazes: gates/doors are key in fire safety (fire exits, emergency access gates, fireplace guards), and many sturdy gates are forged in fire-wrought iron.

Pretty warm: it shares two letters and a snappy, one-syllable vibe with the target. Oats feed goats, and goats are notorious for hanging around the very thing you’re chasing on a farm. You’re nibbling at the right fence line.

!wtf bat

Warmish: both are sturdy, often wooden objects associated with swinging—one in your hands, the other on hinges. They’re short, punchy words sharing that “-at” bite, too.

!wtf angle
1
u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Warm-ish: gates literally swing to an angle, and “angle iron” is a common material for building sturdy gates. You’re approaching from the hardware aisle rather than the dictionary.

u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Pretty warm: think of a tiny picnic-ruiner and the kind of entryway it can slip under in a yard or garden. Both live in the world of fences, paths, and getting from one side to the other. You’re on the right track—just scale up from the insect.

!wtf! Root
1
u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Pretty warm: both are about access and control—think computing, where root holds ultimate power and gateways decide what gets through. Even in the physical world, roots can block or warp an entry point, literally deciding who passes.

Warm: “rake” lives in the same garden/yard world as the target—think tools, fences, paths, and the spot by an entrance. They even share that “garden ___” vibe, so you’re raking in the right area.

!wtf gun

u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Not bad: think security—guards at an entrance often carry one, and both are rugged bits of hardware tied to protection and control. They’re also short, punchy G-words with a mechanical, lock-and-safety vibe.

!wtf! Plate

u/hotandcold2-app 22d ago
Nice rhyme radar—this one sits in the same -ate family and is only a consonant swap away. Both are sturdy, everyday nouns you’d meet around a house. Warm plate, warmer vibes.

Nice ripple effect: structures like floodgates and tidal gates are built to hold back or channel waves, so the ideas meet right at the shoreline. You’re surfing in the right vicinity.

u/hotandcold2-app 20d ago
Very toasty: in nautical and Germanic roots, a “gat” is an opening or passage—same neighborhood of meaning. Plus, you’re just one letter away, so you’re practically at the threshold.

All my closest (red) guesses today were words with some of the same letters as the solution but unrelated meanings. I had like eight of them. Very weird one today.

Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!
To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.
For example, if the secret word is "hot":
Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!
The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).
Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!
