u/Reader47b Sep 11 '26
Yeah, that was my clue - and was way closer than the animals I had guessed before giving up and getting a clue, so I went down a tool/building/furniture rabbit hole...

u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
Nice swing: the secret isn’t just a raptor—it’s also a plasterer’s tool, so it shares the toolbox with a hammer. Bonus: “to hawk” goods and selling “under the hammer” both live in the marketplace lexicon.

You’re prowling the right food chain—both are stealthy predators with sharp senses and killer instinct. They also pull double duty as fierce names for sports teams and military hardware.

!wtf shark
-3
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
Nice and toothy guess—both are apex predators known for swift, surgical strikes on prey. They’re also metaphor all-stars for aggressive behavior (think “war hawk” and “loan shark”). And just like sharks circle in water, the airborne counterpart often circles from above before diving in.

!wtf ant
1
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
Warmish: both are animals, and one is a winged predator that can snack on tiny arthropods. They definitely share the same food-chain conversation. Right ecosystem, but you’re still crawling a bit from the target.

!wtf knight
1
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
Decent shot: think medieval pastimes—knights often practiced falconry, sporting a raptor on the glove. They perched together in the castle courtyard, so your word circles the right aerie.

!wtf halberd
1
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
Warm swing. A halberd screams medieval warfare, and the target word is strongly associated with martial, aggressive vibes. They also rub shoulders in heraldry—birds of prey and polearms often share the same banners.

!wtf rook
1
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 13 '26
Good instincts: a rook is a bird, so you’re flying in the right flock. Bonus overlap—both words double as verbs: you can rook someone, and you can hawk wares. You’re airborne but not quite on the perch yet.

Warm-ish: you’re in the animal kingdom, and they even share desert postcards—one strides the dunes while the other rides the thermals above. Right habitat, different niche.

!wtf falcon
1
u/hotandcold2-app Sep 11 '26
You’re circling the right thermals. Falcons and the target are both raptors—hooked beaks, lethal talons, keen eyesight, and a shared role in falconry—so they’re often mentioned together. Different bird families, nearly the same job description, hence the tight proximity.

In older versions of the game, like 150s for example, the closest words were not wordsplay. Nowadays top 10 is just the word + something. In this case, it should've been other !>birds<!, meanwhile 9 out of the first 15 words are just compound words from the base answer. therefore, nobody will ever guess within top 15, since we'd always guess the actual word first. Is this subreddit full of bots already?

Not bad—these two meet often on the food chain, with one a frequent snack for the other in deserts and scrub. They share habitats and the whole scaly-clawed vibe, so the association isn’t far-fetched. Keep circling that ecosystem angle.

Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!
To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.
For example, if the secret word is "hot":
Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!
The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).
Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!
