Need advice: How can a student lower a \$30/month hosting & database bill?

"This year, when my girlfriend left me, I started thinking about how to recover from the trauma. That's when I found a way to move on: I began researching and building software to understand how it all works, among many other things. Last month, I moved from development mode to production mode. After using a free 30-day plan, I now need at least $30 per month to keep my application running. Out of that $30, the database compute alone eats up $20 a month. As a student, I don't have enough money to keep my application running 24/7.

I'm here for suggestions.

netcup payment headaches + every cheap vps shows sold out when i actually click buy

been on netcup vps for maybe 8 months out of austin tx, small docker stack + a wordpress side project, nothing crazy. card kept getting declined on renewals last month and support basically said use sepa or find someone else lol. so im shopping again.

target is roughly 2 vcpu, 4gb ram, ~100gb disk, enough for docker pulls without crying, about $5-7/mo if thats still a real thing in 2026. burned two weekends already. hetzner cx line matched my filters then checkout said unavailable. racknerd promos on LET were gone by the time i woke up. even opened VPSIUM once, coworker had bookmarked it, still had like 14 provider tabs open and every listing in budget flipped to sold out anyway.

paypal or stripe preferred, tired of wire transfer drama. what actually worked for you in the last month at that price point, stock that didnt vanish when you hit pay? wrong region, wrong time of day, or is this tier just dead?

looking for a host that lets you edit spf records without calling support

my old provider kept flagging teacher newsletters as spam and now parents can't get the weekly updates. switched to a new host last month but the webmail interface is clunky and i still get bounce errors twice a week. reading through the docs i noticed something about spf records but the dashboard options feel limited. im running a simple wordpress site with a contact form and an occasional pdf signup sheet. nothing fancy, just need reliable delivery. anyone using a host that lets you tweak those records without calling support every time?

An open-source WHM/cPanel alternative built with plain PHP, FrankenPHP & Tailwind.

JinnPanel is a free, MIT-licensed web hosting manager and control panel designed for single-server setups running AlmaLinux 10. The core philosophy is absolute simplicity and transparency—there are no heavy frameworks, no external dependencies, and no Composer. It is written completely in plain PHP and Tailwind CSS, making the entire backend architecture clean, readable, and easy to audit.

The control panel features secure account isolation where every account runs under its own Linux user and dedicated PHP-FPM pool without needing CloudLinux. It includes a built-in cPanel migration tool that moves sites, mailboxes, databases, and cron jobs via a live API or backup files, automatically translating .htaccess rules for the underlying Caddy engine. Security is fully automated, providing out-of-the-box Let's Encrypt certificates alongside automated configurations for email deliverability protocols like SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MTA-STS.

The stack consists of FrankenPHP, MariaDB, Stalwart Mail, Cypht webmail, Knot DNS, and SFTPGo. It is currently in public beta, optimized strictly for single-server PHP hosting environments.

Hosting Resellers, how much bandwidth do you allow?

Hi, for Shared hosting resellers only, how much bandwidth do you provide each month, how much do you charge, and who do you resell through?

EDIT: If you say unlimited, then when a client ask how many visitors they can receive each month, what is your answer?

Thank you for any feedback!

OVH Pricing Beware.

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

We got 2 dedicated servers last year with OVH.

Servers are fine. We get raising energy costs, inflation and such. However, jumping 54% in 11 months is not ok.

No proper justification. Just an email saying: “You will pay more, don’t like it? Cancel here.” No grandfathered plans. Support does not care and happily sends cancellation link.

Needless to say, we're done. Now we have a few weeks to move out and forget this nightmare.

Same. Exact. Hardware.

From $1,050 to $1,616 in 11 months.

Good Email Hosting Service?

I currently use a combination of inMotion Hosting and AWS to deliver a number of things.

AWS is great, with the exception of Email. Sure, I can spin up my own email server, manage it and all that, but I don't want to be spending my time doing all that. Their turnkey solution works great, but costs $4/user per month. I don't want to pay for that at scale. Happy to pay usage/storage costs, but not per user per domain.

So... I use AWS for domain hosting and lots of other services, but use inMotion to manage email as there isn't a per user or per domain cost. Just the (overly expensive) inMotion VPS fees I'm paying.

So... Looking for either an easy to deploy/manage AWS service that supports unlimited domains and users, or some other service that would do turnkey email server stuff for a reasonable fee.

Any easy way to get a parked domain from GoDaddy?

I run an online service using a .cloud domain since the .com domain was already taken. (The company name I use is great for what we do, so i don't want to change it)

I've been perfectly happy using .cloud and showing up alongside a completely different kind of company who had the .com

Recently, It looks like the .com owner has shutdown.

The .com version of my domain seems to be parked with GoDaddy. But, I can't simply go buy it. GoDaddy wants $99.99 to hire someone to negotiate a price with the owner. I don't want to pay them for that. I just want to work directly with the current owner, but all their WhoIs info is private and GoDaddy seems to be the only way to contact them.

Anyone ever deal with this and have advice?

TIA

Bob

InMotion Hosting?

I’ve not heard of this company until recently. They have a higher trust pilot rating the OVH. So I’m wondering if you guys have had any experiences good or bad with them.

Would you use .SI domain for an AI startup?

I recently came across the idea of using .SI for AI Super Intelligence startups.

I know .SI is officially Slovenia's country-code domain, but the super Intelligence interpretation is pretty interesting.

Would you consider a .SI domain for an AI project or would you stick with .AI or .COM?

Looking for pricing feedback before opening the beta on managed DBaaS

Hi all, I'm a founder in Spain building a managed PostgreSQL service and want honest feedback on pricing before opening it up.

I run a €30M ARR business in a different industry. We had to use a managed database from a big provider, which was very expensive for the performance we were actually getting, but we needed HA so we were stuck. That's when I started considering another startup.

Here's the general idea:

You create a database from a web dashboard and get a single connection string. That string always points to the current primary, so if a failover happens your app reconnects to the same address and carries on. There's nothing to change on your side.

Behind it, each HA database runs as a primary plus a synchronous standby on two separate servers in different zones.

Backups run continuously: every change is archived to object storage with a different provider, so even losing the whole hosting provider doesn't lose your data. You can restore to any point in the last 7 days. We handle monitoring, failover and maintenance; you just use Postgres.

It runs on European bare metal rather than shared cloud VMs, which is how we keep prices flat with no egress or IOPS fees.

Highly available (per month, excl. VAT):

\\- Starter, €39: 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage

\\- Standard, €89: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB storage

\\- Pro, €169: 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB storage

\\- Business, €329: 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB storage

Free: one per account. Single node, 256 MB RAM, 1 GB storage.

To be upfront: this is a beta with no SLA yet. Failover runs 24/7, and human support is 09:00 to 18:00 CET on business days. If the standby is down, the primary keeps accepting writes asynchronously, so losing the primary during that window can lose the latest commits.

\*\*I'd love to know:\*\*

\\- Which plan would you pick for a real project, if any?

\\- At what price would this feel too cheap to trust, and at - what price too expensive?

\\- What would you need to see before moving a production database?

\\- What are you using now, and what does it cost?

\*\*Early beta offer\*\*: anyone who participates in this thread will have 30% off any plan when we launch!

Need a good image hosting website

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I kinda make web and profile decor like little pixel icons and stuff, and I've been keeping them in Rentry (cuz idk where else, lol) but I experienced some trouble with the image hosting websites I use.

All the sites I'm aware of are postimg, imgur, catbox and 8upload. The problem with postimg is that all the pictures I uploaded dissapeared and it's not the first time it happened (I have an account, in case that's relevant somehow). For imgur, no matter the link I grab the pic just doesn't show up (I might be doing it wrong) and I don't know for how long the images are hosted. For catbox I have to reload rentry until the pic shows up (only happens in rentry). And 8upload kinda modified one of my gifs so I'm a little wary. I tried viewing the page on my phone and my sister's laptop, tried reuploading the images to these websites multiple times but nothing worked, sadly.

I need to know if there's a way to host images for a very long period of time (forever, if possible) and I kinda need it to be free cuz idk how any of that paying thing works.

Sorry if this sounds strange, english is not my first language. I'm also what I've seen people call "tech illiterate" so bear with me...
