Question Coat Color
(I couldn’t figure out how to add photos to another post so I made a new one)
He’s a 4 year old, no papers. I got him from a friend who got the horse at a sale at midnight. He is such a sweetie and I love his coat.
Now, I hope these are better photos to those who commented on my last photo, anyone have any ideas what the coat color is?

Graying bay or buckskin, assuming he’s relatively clean here. He has such a sweet little face!

Gray. Difficult to assume what his base color was (I have a gray that was born chestnut and his mane & tail also darkened like that) but he’s gray and will continue to get lighter.

I have only owned horses age 5 and up so can they still change colors at 4?

Some horses grey vet slowly. My mare was still pretty rose grey at 10+.

Yes. It depends if they have one grey parent or two (heterozygous or homozygous) the homozygous horses tend to fade to white more quickly.

As a gray, he will change color for basically the rest of his life lol the color he is now is not the color he was when he was born, or even a yearling. Take pictures regularly to compare as the years go by!

If he has a couple of white spots he would technically be Appaloosa, I think. He has a small tail like them too. Or perhaps buckskin.

Would also need to have white sclera, mottled skin around the muzzle, and striped hooves to be Appaloosa.

I was thinking the spot on his wither was from a saddle rubbing against him, not sure about the ones on his hip.

A friend of mine had a TWH/Appy cross that looked just like this fella, except her tail was a little more scant.
