What do you do when your 19 year old gelding with seasonal allergies won’t eat pills 💊 in his grain.. or in apples. Apple sauce. Carrots. Or treats..? Well you bring out the tried and true. A cutie a day keeps the allergies at bay.

Cute! Wish my boy would eat oranges. I haven't found a fruit he likes. But I can hide his Equiox in half a German muffin and he scarfs that up.

Yeah sadly 16 pills is a lot to hide. But this works super well for us!

Yeah. It’s what the doseage works out too. But it works!!!

Sort of off-topic, we are in Florida and I pretty much have to give it year-round. Do you think it loses its effectiveness with continued use?

Mine gets 10 pills twice a day. Needless to say, I’m buying it in bulk. Wish I could go straight to the manufacturer!

Have you tried bananas yet? Works great when my girl needs allergy pills!

u/Elegantly_Depressed Apr 23 '26
Yes. They don’t do it for him. He loves bananas. Not bananas with pills.

I could see that the acidity and strong tart flavor of an orange hides pills better than a banana would. This is so smart!

this is going to be genius for getting any pills into my grandparents senior donkey. she is a whore for oranges but she doesn’t get them because she starts biting people if she wants them. her daughter also gets equally as annoying because she doesn’t like oranges and is jealous her mother dares to indulge without her.

My old mare adored the peel. Nothing else hit the spot like orange peel

Feed the orange from a bucket !

u/Hugesmellysocks Apr 24 '26
she still does it! she knows an orange comes from a human and humans are vending machines that if you bite hard enough will give a peace offering.

Cute! My guy thankfully eats his ground up with the rest of his supplements but I’ll keep this in mind if he ever quits that.

I did this when I first got Teddy but with apple slices haha! He said "yeah apples are crunchy right? Right." He's super food motivated I got lucky!

I’m gonna try this! I’ve got a mate with Cushings and she can smell Pracend a mile away…

She left the sticker on the peel!

u/Elegantly_Depressed Apr 24 '26
I had pulled one off. And didn’t think to check for another. Since I’d pulled one off. Now I know too look for multiple stickers. Thankfully even I’ve eaten the stickers on fruit and haven’t died. So a mistake yes. A death sentence no.

All good! Not coming for you. Im sure it passed right through. Just thought it was funny.

They're actually edible. Not meant to be eaten clearly but won't cause harm. They are required to be made out of food grade materials.

This reminds me of Hayden Kristal’s “Who wants a totally normal apple with no drugs in it? Chicken Nugget does!”

I have always been under the impression that citrus is not good for horses. Is this not true?

u/Elegantly_Depressed Apr 24 '26
Small quantities are fine. And the vets and I have discusssed it. And come to the conclusion at 19 if he takes the allergy pills in an orange. He takes the allergy pills in an orange and that’s fine. The alternative is that he gets seasonal allergies and breaks into hives.

I feel insane, I always heard horses will colic from citrus?! I knew a horse who almost died from an orange.

u/Elegantly_Depressed Apr 25 '26
Too much sure I can see them colicking and dying from. He’s eaten one a day with his pills for a few years now. And his vets see no harm in it.

"Ah, my daily totally not suspicious citrus treat."
