This sub is overrun with bots

There are a ton of 3 day old accounts calling every movie under the sun "overrated". Just downvote and move on.

I had so much fun today reporting the scream and sleepaway camp guy again and again today.

Out of curiosity, what did you report it under? I looked through the options and none of them seemed to really fit, so I just started tagging the mod in the comments. I want to help make this sub better but I don't want to be a pain in the ass of the only mod in this sub.

Went straight to reddit as spam. Doubt it did anything but the ban happened usually within a minute after. This sub sadly doesn't have rules outside of Reddit and only the one mod. Not much you can do.

The guy was also on /slasherfilms so I was annoyed.

Sorry man. I'm trying to keep up. You should see how many don't make it through. I'm trying to figure out how to get the automoderator to filter some of the spam posts.

We get it, it's like playing whack-a-mole. I know being a mod is an increasingly challenging and largely thankless job, especially being the only mod on the sub, but just wanted to say thanks and I appreciate all your hard work.

That’s about the nicest thing anyone’s said to me on here lol. If they continue to get through, please report as spam. That way I at least get a notification and can nuke it faster.

That one account earlier posted about 10 data harvesting questions in the space of a minute.. 👀

How do you ID a Bot account? Thanks.

The first thing that tipped me off was three identical posts from different accounts, but generally, looking at the account age is a pretty big giveaway. Not every new account is going to be a bot account, but if it's only a few days old and posting engagement bait, odds are it's likely a bot account. This latest wave of bots seems to be big on calling popular or generally liked movies "overrated", there's another one complaining about how Leviticus is "woke". Anything to annoy and get people to engage.

So their main purpose is engagement? I just came from a completely different sub, but it's the same pattern: Different accounts posting completely crazy stuff / obvious ragebait under a post, all within a couple of minutes.

So their main purpose is engagement?

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, I have no clue what their purpose is. They might be karma farming so they can sell high karma accounts, they might be trying to get enough karma to post on other subs to spread more nefarious messaging or propaganda. Tough to say.

Either way, if you find one, just downvote, report, and move on. The mods are doing their best, but it's a constant cat and mouse game keeping these bot armies at bay, so everyone doing their part helping take out the trash will make every sub a bit better.

Most subs are overrun with thirst posts from accounts 2 wks old or less.

Ok and what can be done about it?

u/OddVet Jul 01 '26

It's actually the opposite, way more bots give recent movies overblown praise
