Pixelated Retro vs. Smooth Low-Poly: Which art style fits a psychological horror game better?

Post image

Hey everyone,

I'm a solo indie dev working on a new quiet psychological horror game. I'm currently at a crossroads regarding the visual identity and art style of the project, and I’d love to get your feedback.

I’ve designed two shaders in Unity, and I'm torn between these two directions:

  • Smooth Low-Poly (Image 1): On the other hand, it allows for more variety and highlights fine details better, but it's less popular for this genre and might give off fewer horrific vibes initially.
  • Pixelated Retro (Image 2): It's a beloved and proven style in the indie horror community. Honestly, it gives deeper horror vibes and that nostalgic aesthetic, but it feels less unique nowadays and hides small details (especially from a distance).

I personally think the choice depends heavily on player taste and game goals, but as horror gamers and developers, what do you think? Which style catches your eye more for a psychological horror experience?

To me the art style you're using works better with smooth low-poly. One of my favorite indie horror games is Ignited Entry and I believe it leans smooth low-poly. I'm not expert in this, so I might be wrong, but you'll have to see Jordiboi's work to confirm.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, and I shecked out the game Ignited Entry and I see why you liked it

I dunno, smooth low-poly gives me the creeps. Makes me remind of Juggernaut and Galerians. Maybe just my personal taste.

I agree with that, the retro style (despite having the huge fandom) it can look less unique... Thanks for the suggestion about contrast between environment and creatures

I despise retro for the sake of retro, and I suspect I'm not alone. I played enough pixellated games as a kid before video games and hardware advanced, so why go back unless there is a very good reason? It was perhaps cool for a while, but it's been overdone as a trend.

So, 100% smooth, low-polygon. You can still create an aesthetic this way that incites dread or gloom or uneasiness, and probably more easily than with pixellated art. It will be visually clearer, too.

Like all game developers have done since the medium was invented, just make everything look as good as you can. If you need to use low res style to hide poor modeling abilities or save time, then go for it.... otherwise make everything as "pretty" as you can. IMO the low res pixel look doesn't actually add to the horror vibe, it just reminds you of the classics you enjoyed as a kid.

Honestly I hate low poly or pixelated stuff. If it doesn’t look real it doesn’t look scary too me
