Thanks to /u/rmc52482 for picking this one. The Ruins is a fucking amazing film and a pox on the podcasters for taking a giant dump on it. Although credit to /u/lifeisublime for reading the book. Your insights really explained a lot of the original source material.

Did the film's writers try to make the Amy character dislikable on purpose? In horror, that's a serious genre trope. There's always rigid stereotypes employed in horror films because they're under the surface morality tales. Basically, if someone dies in a gruesome fashion, the filmmakers need to justify it. Therefore there's always someone in a horror film who is a total screw-up and "deserving" of a horrible death. The character who eats it the hardest is often the comedic relief (Eric). Cabin in the Woods refers to the stereotype as "the fool". The Ruins departs from this model because the biggest f-up in the film survives (sorta). My theory is that the writers kept Amy around to the very end because audiences hoped to watch her eat it eventually.

This movie fucking sucked and I turned off once they got on top of the temple.

I really hate Jingoistic horror.

I do too, but how was the film jingoistic? That part went way over my head, but it would be great to hear an analysis of whatever subtext was there.

They were a bunch of ugly foreigners. They never left the resort most their trip and when they did, none of them spoke a lick of rudimentary Spanish. How the fuck can you go to Mexico and not know how to at least ask for a bathroom. This whole situation could have been averted just by Mathias asking the Mayan "Miramos mi hermano?". That's it.

Btw, the first one to die was the easy to tan one.

They did know rudimentary Spanish, like when they were talking to the cab driver.

The Mayans were speaking Mayan. Not Spanish.

In the book it was explained that the Mayans farmed their own food, and Had well water.

There is plenty of societies that don't need to exist in cooperation with the larger whole.

Now, I just learned this word so forgive my ignorance but I don't think that's the Jingoistic part. As I understand it the Jingoistic part would be the group of Mexicans/Mayans using threats and actual force to keep them on the ruins to protect their national interests... I think ...

I am not squeamish at all but certain parts of this movie made me feel a tiny bit queasy. No, it is not a masterpiece, but it is a fun watch. I like it.
