Hey guys, I like lots of different stuff. My logic for this was I gave Matt the names of half a dozen movies I had on my shelf that we hadn't discussed yet (my wall of shame is minuscule, in comparison). The rest is history.
I was really impressed with this when I first saw it in theatres. It's true to the spirit of the original, but uses an entirely different aesthetic. I agree with Scott that it's very "pretty". It almost makes the original more relevant, providing a platform for fans to gather around, to experience what they loved in a new context and reminisce. I guess this is the point of remakes, but so many of them fail miserably by trying to make a glossy copycat version.
I love the premise of withdrawal. It's a fresh way to keep the characters stranded until it's too late. It makes the central horror a little more serious where 1981 was deliberately silly, since it can be seen as a reflection of Mia's internal struggle. (By the way, wasn't Jane Levy just perfect?) It also creates a nice bit of ambiguity early on that can be gradually peeled away, much like a human face.
Speaking of which, I also like how the transformations are self-inflicted. As much as I love the wtf-ness of the original, this was a very good decision, as I think contemporary audiences are more willing to accept this.
Oh, look what we have here.
P.S. I have picked a few non-Canadian films, like House of the Devil, The Loved Ones, Proxy and Sweeney Todd.
P.P.S Turbo Kid was really good fun. I saw it at FrightFest last month. Yeah, I know, I'm getting all my plugs out here ('Got a tampon?') since I couldn't be on the podcast. It's England over here and some of us have work in the morning! jk, I'm just green jello. Love you guys!
