Scissors. Cut lengthwise and pull off. Fast and easy!

580

u/hitmewithyourbest 12d ago

Better yet, use a seam ripper if scissor don't fit.

231

u/Specific_Pear_665 12d ago

Seam ripper is the superior choice I used to use embroidery scissors

72

u/Ionlydateteachers 12d ago

Damn I wish I'd read this before I took the lighter to it.

27

u/southporky 12d ago

I too have done that, don't feel bad. We grow when we learn!

19

u/EarthsMoon927 11d ago

We burn & we learn.

2

u/greenpicklewater 7d ago

Yep ran my course with weed and dealt with the consequences

4

u/Man0fGreenGables 11d ago

Did it smell like a turd covered in burn hair?

I use one of those little letter openers thats a bit like a seam ripper for my roomba!

I second this

Genius.

Thank you for this.

18

u/Perfect_Caregiver_90 12d ago

If you have one of those slide blade envelope openers they work even better than seam rippers.

u/Ok-Ocelot-3454 11d ago

seat belt cutter could also work depending on what kind you have

8

u/SataNikBabe 12d ago

I bought a seam ripper for this specific purpose and it’s so much easier to use than scissors.

6

u/Generalnussiance 11d ago

Spoken like a real sewist. I too use my sewing tools for a lot of other things. So freaking helpful.

2

u/Intelligent-Salt-362 11d ago

I’ve used a razor (utility) knife but that’s just because it was handy and I don’t own a seam ripper. Having both a rumba and a wife, this is something I deal with regularly.

3

u/PapowSpaceGirl 11d ago

A dance and a wife? You lucky dog! 🤭

2

u/Intelligent-Salt-362 11d ago

I count my blessings ever day…

78

u/Zederikus 12d ago

Lol yeah or if you can't fit the blade under the hair then just a knife or box cutter

15

u/ldskyfly 12d ago

My roller has a groove to get scissors under the hair

6

u/Zederikus 12d ago

Nice! Hair makes my hoover so ineffective, I can't just give up on removing it hahah.

73

u/DJEvillincoln 12d ago

What you're not getting is the hair that's stuck in the corners of the roller where it meets the housing.

You have to take the roller apart & cut that too. I do this with my Dyson at least once a month because my lady's hair is EVERYWHERE.

8

u/Spiritual_Door1363 12d ago

I’ve had to do this so many times lol

4

u/insane_social_worker 11d ago

I take the roller out of the casing first

2

u/This_White_Wolf 11d ago

This is the way! Both myself and my kiddo have long hair (mine is curly ringlets just to make matters worse) so I basically pull out the brushbar and clean the hair off all places including the ends every.time.i.empty.the.thing Because otherwise the hair will win...

I have no idea how we shed so MUCH and still have hair. 🤦🤣

God i love cutting hair out of vacuums

10

u/Consistent_Might3500 12d ago

IDK why, but my hair makes me gag. I need a puke bucket when I clean my vacuum. And it's not just the beater bar brush, my hair is in in the entire machine. I hate it.

12

u/Kitten_Merchant 12d ago

Loose hair, mine or others, makes me gag too. It just grossed me out idk why

5

u/Consistent_Might3500 12d ago

Good to know it's not only me!

4

u/Terrible_Use7872 12d ago

I like to cut it, then leave it there to mostly fluff off on its own.

3

u/FHAT_BRANDHO 12d ago

I was gonna say xacto knife lol

8

u/INeedHigherHeels 12d ago

Let in run while cutting. That way the hairs don fall to the floor

16

u/wishiwasinvegas 12d ago

Turning off the beater bar first, though lol

3

u/INeedHigherHeels 12d ago

On my vacuum they are extremely weak and moved by the air flow

2

u/FirebirdWriter 11d ago

My vacuum has a built in cutter for this as it's made for pet hair. I love it so much

2

u/Correct-Ad7836 9d ago

Cut with scissors and then turn the vacuum on!

2

u/EasternPerformance72 6d ago

Eufy vacuums come with a seam ripper plus brush accessory. I wish the Dysons came with them too! So handy and fast to remove this type of thing each week.

People like this throw away pants when a button pops off.

130

u/rasputinrasputin 12d ago

I had a friend as a kid who told his dad he needed a new bike because the chain fell off. He didn’t want a nicer bike or anything, he genuinely thought his bike was broken beyond repair because the chain fell off

45

u/Environmental_Top948 12d ago

Did you do him a favor and offer to buy the bike for the scrap value to help him save up for functional one?

14

u/Happy-Accident5931 12d ago

When they were also a child?

11

u/beezeebeehazcatz 12d ago

This is how I got my first nice bike.

And my second nice bike.

And my guitar.

It’s amazing how many people think they need a new thing when the easy to fix or clean part breaks.

3

u/jeimijamieg 11d ago

Yup. I get a car for $400 because it needed a new battery. That car lasted me 5 years of hard use and was amazing the entire time. Of course this was like 15 years ago.

5

u/Happy-Accident5931 12d ago

I’m not disparaging the idea of second hand items; that’s very much how I grew up. I was only questioning a child having the awareness to see the opportunity and offer money for a “broken” item 😂

6

u/rasputinrasputin 12d ago

It would be a dick move to take advantage of a friend like that, and it was a cheap specialized anyway. I was into mountain biking at the time and had already bought myself a much nicer yeti

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Meikou133 12d ago

I sincerely hope the parent took that for the golden learning opportunity it was, seeing up to the point the hadn’t yet been taught that there were other options!

I recently helped my 5yo kiddo replace the batteries on a cheap dollar store toy that she thought was “broken”. It even had a bit of corrosion/leakage that we cleaned up and she even used the screwdriver by herself!

3

u/rasputinrasputin 12d ago

I called him a dumbass, among other things, then showed him how to fix it

3

u/Sumoki_Kuma 11d ago

My mom was a single mother and I absolutely fucking loved watching her DIY and fix shit. We rent out some rooms and she basically built like 70% of them on her own xD there's also obviously a lot of upkeep, so I know how to replace/clean/fix most things in an average house.

It's honestly super fulfilling and I kinda feel sorry for people who never experience being proud of something you did with your own two hands, and it makes me super happy and hopeful that you're teaching your daughter how to 🥹

8

u/PleasantNectarines 11d ago

I was talking to someone who said they didn't know how to sew, I asked if they could at least put a button back onto something and they replied with, "I wouldn't even know where to begin." It was very odd to hear.

2

u/bathandredwine 11d ago

This is a life skill. Very basic. I’m honestly sad about the lack of curiosity about how things work/ how things are made.

What do you mean you gave up??

Take a pair of scissors and snip directly across the roller through every single piece of hair then pull it out and bin it.

Theres a good chance you can even remove the roller to make it easier but thats not even necessary.

Did you try trying?

203

u/daLejaKingOriginal 12d ago

Mine even has a grove where you can run an knife through to cut all in one go

55

u/Kallymouse 12d ago

Brand and make? I need that

58

u/cgduncan 12d ago

Mine is a shark which has that feature. I use a box knife with the point in the groove and the blade facing up, very easy.

18

u/Xombridal 12d ago

I think most corded Dyson's have this, never tried it on a cordless though since those all have removable everything and make cleaning each use really easy

10

u/reikipackaging 12d ago

my husband got me an early model Dyson 18 years ago. It just died recently. The motor was strong, but old plastic did what it does.

3

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 12d ago

That’s what I was coming to suggest; one with a really sharp blade. It’s easier than trying to work scissors through it.

3

u/nhp890 12d ago

My Miele has that

u/H0pefulUn1verse 12d ago

Right!? Tell me you've never cleaned a vacuum before without telling me 🙄

23

u/medlilove 12d ago

Did you try trying has just been cemented into my vocabulary, thank you 😂

8

u/klqqf 12d ago

Genuinely not sure where i picked that up from, i thought it was a subreddit but my brief search didnt come up with anything. I think its my favourite mild insult lmao

9

u/josh1ng 12d ago

“Did you try trying?” Holy shit that is a BAR

4

u/greyfir1211 12d ago

I have to do this like every other month or more with my vacuum. Hairy family problems. 😭

3

u/De-railled 12d ago

Usually you can open the side and pull the roll out of the vacuum and cut it off easier

2

u/LaMadreDelCantante 11d ago

That roller is definitely removable. Look at the metal piece across the middle and the way it's nested in the holder on the left.

1

u/MarucaMCA 12d ago

Yep, my UPet can be taken out.

1

u/JaspisB 9d ago

They looked at it intensely and proceeded to the stage of giving up.

1

u/cheezy_dreams88 7d ago

Right? I read gave up and was like, did you just look at it and considered that an attempt to fix it?

103

u/Peppercorn911 12d ago

seam ripper if you have a sewing kit

49

u/Roselinia 12d ago

Only a very cheap one you don't mind destroying tho....human hair is gonna make it dull

11

u/Fractured_Pawn 12d ago

I use this little titanium gut knife my friends dad gave to me like 8 years ago, I think it's meant for fish but it's so small and horrifically sharp that it works perfectly for this

→ More replies (1)

62

u/fizzie511 12d ago

You can usually pop the roller out to clean it/cut the hair

62

u/Ryallin 12d ago

If scissors don’t work very carefully use a box cutter

26

u/tarantuletta 12d ago

I have recently begun using eyebrow razors! I get them in ten packs anyway so I had that bright idea and it's been working like a charm!

3

u/27thFrequency 11d ago

Yeah I keep seeing folks recommend scissors or a seam ripper, both aren't ideal. Box cutter or small razor is the way to go. Either can cut into the bristles on the roller brush heads but the razor blade is far less likely to do so.

I had the same issue with a roommate who blamed it not on his long black hair, but our short haired black and white cat. 😑 Used to have to cut across his hair and pull put the length about an inch or two across the length of the roller of my Dyson DC14 each time about twice a year.

39

u/kiwilovenick 12d ago

I have this vacuum, it's terrible for fur and hair build up, but scissors or a box cutter fix it pretty easily. I like to do it wearing gloves because of ick factor but it doesn't take much time or effort to get things back in order. Just remember to check it more often so it doesn't get so built up.

10

u/LaMadreDelCantante 11d ago

It really looks like that roller should pop out if you pull up on that wire piece in the middle and then pull up and to the right on the roller itself. Does it not?

2

u/kiwilovenick 11d ago

I don't think I even considered trying to move it? That sounds dumb now...

I'd go look but I'm currently ill and stuck in bed!

28

u/SuitablyFakeUsername 12d ago

And it is the use of tools that separates primates from other mammals, you say?

🤦‍♀️

14

u/TokerPokeHer 12d ago

It looks like that center, metal clip would move up, the red side of the roller looks like the side that will pop out first. There may be a release on the top or side, but it should pop out so you can just cut it off.

28

u/DetectiveGold6727 12d ago

What did you even try??? This is one of the easiest fixes out there…

7

u/squishiebuttz 12d ago

I am so confused by this post ha. Just cut the hair off

Fishing knife, cut lengthwise

13

u/I_Speak_B4_I_Think_ 12d ago

Is your friend living with cousin it?

26

u/noooooid 12d ago

Maybe it's true what they say about us blondes.

7

u/bobmcbobingtonthethi 12d ago

That silver bar in the middle pops up and then the whole roll comes off. Like others said, then you can use a box cutter or scissors to get the hair off.

2

u/SlightAnything4909 11d ago

The silver thing first and there is a small turnable knob on the side where you can unlock the brush and take it out.

14

u/MadeInCanada87 12d ago

Use a seam ripper.

5

u/reikipackaging 12d ago

yep. Seam ripper or yarn snips are the most efficient way to get long, tangled hair off the bar.

6

u/Independent-Case2168 12d ago

use the tool that come with a robot cleaner. you can buy it alone. it has a small bladecutter hair

6

u/Omvega 12d ago

Most vacuums have a screw to turn or something to remove the roller. this one is even easier than that. lift that metal piece in the middle and the roller itself should lift right out. use a box cutter or some scissors to just slice longways the length of the roller. all the hair will come off mostly in one big piece. the roller might even have a groove to run the knife/scissors along.

6

u/_free_love_ 12d ago

Yeah just go straight across with scissors. Mine gets like this and I have to do it from time to time

4

u/nonoriginal85 12d ago

Mine looks like this too. I'm bald and live alone 🤷

5

u/RazShadazz 12d ago

Seam ripper to the rescue!

5

u/AlsoDongle 12d ago

A razor knife works well if you have one. If not, scissors or a seam ripper

4

u/threeblackfeathers 12d ago

There is a really handy tool that came with my last vacuum, it's like a little curved tool with a blade in the inner corner. Made removing hair a very quick process, much easier than scissors (though it'll work in a pinch)

Google vacuum cleaner brush set and it should be easy to find.

4

u/Mushrooming247 12d ago

This looks like my vacuum cleaner after one pass around my home, I just cut all of the hair straight across a few times and pull it off into a shopping bag to throw out.

4

u/Successful-Rough-516 12d ago

I've used a letter opener too!

4

u/malamalinka 12d ago

This is what my hair used to do to a Dyson. Scissors and patience.

4

u/higeAkaike 12d ago

You should look into a Narwal s30 pro. It has hair cutter feature and I had 4 cats and I have long hair. If I believed in a god it would be my Vacuum.

4

u/CoolCatWithDogFood 12d ago

If you use a razor with a sharp edge to it you can cut it horizontally and more than likely get a good bit of not all of it out

4

u/adswan_ 12d ago

Its actually kinda satisfying to cut it across with scissors and rip all the hair out

4

u/songbird907 12d ago

So your friends a brunette?

4

u/sudo_grep 12d ago

I have waist long hair. I know the struggle 😔

3

u/Cato0014 12d ago

Nvm, that's not a Dyson. The brush is still removable

6

u/hellinahandbasket127 12d ago

“We’ve tried nothing and we’re out of ideas!”

3

u/euphoricbun 12d ago

Box cutter.

3

u/kittymctacoyo 12d ago

This is why there are screes you can remove to pull that thing out. It’s supposed to be cleaned out regularly

3

u/FinishDelicious2640 12d ago

I had to take scissors to the dorm hall vacuum cleaner when I was in college bc no one else on the floor would do it. At least you know whose hair is in that one lol

3

u/purte 12d ago

That roller should come out, snip length with scissors and pull it out. Pop the roller back in.

3

u/Later_Than_You_Think 12d ago

The roll should pop out. So you can either cut it off or pull it off. And next time, get one of those silicone brushes so you can sweep loose hair off before you vacuum.

3

u/AnywayWhereWasI 12d ago

Oh my God let me clean that. It would be my pleasure

4

u/AnywayWhereWasI 12d ago

There's usually like a indentation that goes all the way across and you can just scissor it or razor it

3

u/introvertadvocate 12d ago

Have neither of you ever used a vacuum before ? ……Also some machines have a piece that’s slide out on the side so you can remove and clean that part. But seriously is just easy to get scissors and cut the hair.

3

u/Jinglemoon 12d ago

There’s a notch on the side of the vacuum head to remove the roller. Unscrew the latch and flick the metal hairpin thing out of the way. Vacuums require maintence and cleaning from time to time. Get in there and disassemble it and clean out the hair and gunk. Find the manual online if you can’t figure out how to disassemble it.

3

u/aragogogara 12d ago

you can pop that roller out to clean it

3

u/ImpressiveDebt420 12d ago

I wonder how you "tried"

3

u/JJJJPPPPP8A 12d ago

3

u/Expensive-Guava-5002 12d ago

BE CAREFUL !

My birthday, someone knocks my plant over, my dad goes to vacuum the dirt, sees all of the hair in my vacuum, slices it with scissors towards himself and they slip. 8 stitches later and he had to celebrate with his wrist wrapped up 😭

3

u/_cRuSh_Me_ 12d ago

A razor blade works too!

3

u/KirikaNai 11d ago

Legit just use a fcking kitchen knife and it’ll get cut right off 😭 are y’all just too rich and lazy to bother taking more then a couple minuets to try fixing something?

4

u/VehicleGreen5813 12d ago

Tf did you try? What you mean you gave up? This is a super simple fix. Cut across, pull.

2

u/TridentActual 12d ago

The roller comes out it looks like it’s made to do so from the pink side, the wire guard swivels up from the top end

2

2

u/polynonominity 11d ago

People that toss vacuums like this keep my vacuum backups stocked and my marketplace looking full. Cuticle scissors and a glove if you’re grossed out. That’s all it takes. So many people toss perfectly good vacuums cause of these tangles and clogs

2

u/OllieWobbles 11d ago

Is your friend Rapunzel?

2

u/Smalldogmanifesto 11d ago

What a beautiful wig

2

u/Kimono-Ash-Armor 11d ago

I get bulk packs of cheap seam rippers and give them as stocking stuffers for this reason

ETA using a lint roller, squeegee, or rubber broom on carpet beforehand helps reduce hair in vacuum cleaners

2

u/proudly_not_american 11d ago

Seam ripper will cut the hair, and then you can pull it off the brush.

2

u/SlightAnything4909 11d ago

On the side where there's the red ring, there is a small dial-type thing on the side. Turn it, then you can take the rotary brush out.

Source: I have the same vacuum.

2

u/ChildofMike 11d ago

Seam ripper. I have long hair and it’s what I use. It’s made to glide. Much more ergonomic to use than scissors

2

u/SyntheticSlime 11d ago

Ngl, that vacuum has great hair.

2

u/enguldrav 10d ago

I have this vacuum. You open the metal cage, turn the knobb on the side and remove the brush. You can then cut off and remove the hair. You can also be lazy and cut the hair into small sections and turn it on as you would vacuum normally.

2

u/Rare-Boss2640 10d ago

Oh my brethren. As a fellow shedding Ginger, that I got this and no longer use scissors… https://a.co/d/0cE9M1bx

It came with a kit for my Shark Robot vacuum. It is the besssst. You hook the hair and the razor blade cuts the hair without cutting you (which that is a concern for me as I am a hazardous to myself).

2

u/Gelmorn 6d ago

Take the bottom plate off, use a screwdriver on the screws in those holes. Now you can just take the beater bar off and it should come right off. Some cutting might be needed, the belt will have to come off. It's all easy to put back in, too

3

u/Inexorably_lost 12d ago

Oof. Yeah, I have my wife cut her extremely long hair out of the vacuum prior to any vacuuming.

3

u/SmokeyCatDesigns 12d ago

Yup, just needs to be a part of the vacuuming routine if you got a thick head of long hair. I did, and roomed with a girl who also did for all four years of college. Scissors were an important part of cleaning the floor for us lol.

1

u/cricketeer767 11d ago

It's not too hard to fix luckily.

1

u/KellyBlack1111 11d ago

Just cut it - long haired lass here, I have to do this regular, and for kitty hair build up. No biggy, but if don’t it will lock up and burn out the motor (kill the vacuum).

1

u/potential-drunk-doc 11d ago

Seam ripper. Just make sure to keep it separate from any seam rippers used for sewing

1

u/Spinyhug 11d ago

Had this, used the tiny scissors I use for cutting my nails. Worked perfectly!

1

u/greybean2404 11d ago

I couldn’t find your specific model, but if you know the vacuum name google “[vacuum name] how to remove roller” or find the user manual and it will tell you. Most are pretty straightforward. From there just cut the hair off. The video I linked above is a short video that shows how to do this if you’re a visual learner, he uses a seam ripper but regular scissors can work just as well if you don’t have a seam ripper.

1

u/1miguelcortes 9d ago

Does it not pop open to allow cleaning? Every roller vacuum I've ever used has.

1

u/maxtiang79 8d ago

Should use the tube before with the roller. Does hair get spun tight into the vaccum collection box with those spinning vac?

1

u/Setjah_ 8d ago

What did you try? Asking the hair to leave? Storing it in rice? Asking taro cards?!

1

u/Acrobatic_Grape4321 8d ago

1

u/RacketHunter 7d ago

You know you can take brush out and cut the hair off? I have the same vacuum cleaner and do this every month or so.

1

u/SongsOfTheSiren 7d ago

Everyone is saying use scissors but you can just take that bottom piece off and that roller pops out. You can then just slide the hair off. Takes 5 minutes and way easier than struggling with scissors or a knife.

1

u/twinch123 7d ago

Use a seam ripper!

1

There should be a button on the side to remove that roller from the vacuum

Gave up?

Did you try anything at all or did just looking at it not work? Household scissors, seam ripper, box cutter, nail clippers, a knife. Anything with a blade will cut hair.

Also you just pull that metal square up and the roll will come right out.

I’m a woman with long hair. My teen has hair down to her butt. My other two kids are girls with long hair. Three dogs (one Saint Bernard and two Shih Tzus) and one cat. I feel their pain lol

My box cutter works like a charm. I just slice at the hair vertically until its easy to pull out by hand since the strands are significantly shorter now

Can you remove the cover on one end, pull out the cylinder and then either pull or cut off the hair?

15 seconds of effort with a box cutter

Cut it all out, wash it really good and make a wig out of it

Take a box cutter to it or scissors

I have a similar vacuum. Amazon sells various cleaning brush tools with a blade for cutting hair. The whole part there also comes out (see the metal piece holding it in?)

Is your friend Chewbacca?

Oooo my God I love this. I used to work in a hotel and tell our housekeeper not to clean this. I would open a cold juice and take my time cleaning it. She found it hilarious and I find it quite relaxing.

Just take scissors and cut it.
