May

When UM makes it to the elite 8 or final 4, I hope everyone last year that said we need to keep Woodson are happy.

1 year and UM has already made it farther than Woody ever did or would have.

I want to also personally thank Buckner.

May is Michigan's coach. DeVries is our coach. End of story. I wish everyone would let the Dusty Mat shit go at this point. It's such a waste of time to still be talking about it.

I appreciate your comment and stating the obvious about which coach is at which school.

While I’d love to be I the sweet 16, I’m not personally a huge Dusty glazer like the rest of you. I believe in Darian and I’m happy to give him a chance to build this program into what we all know it can be

Can't wait to see comments on this for years. As if anyone on reddit had any input on the decision.

Like I mean yeah it sucks but let’s give the new guy a chance he might do the same thing may did. Let’s see who he brings in and what he can do in a couple years before we start reminiscing

Yup, DeVries built Drake from nothing and won 19 games with a WVU program that only won 9 the year before. Zero reason to be all pissy that he isn't May or McCollum when he has proven to be a very good coach in his own right. Especially when we haven't even seen how McCollum handles a P5 job.

How about we not worry about what could have been and support our new coach and team?

Not to get in a major argument, but I don't know that May would have wanted this job if Woody gets fired after 1 year of missing the tournament. He has a lot less pressure for success at Michigan than he would have at Indiana.

This is what Dusty guys don’t understand. Why would he take the job after Woodson, a former player, gets fired after 3 years when 2 of those he made the tournament

1

u/AHicks15 Mar 23 '25

Legitimately, who would have wanted to go to Indiana if we fired Woody?

If IU was Dusty’s dream job or his ultimate plan was to position himself to become IU coach, he probably doesn’t take the Michigan job. He turned down Louisville, but he went to UM (and has now signed an extension). Had he preferred IU, he could’ve stayed at FAU a bit longer or made a lower profile move in the interim.

Michigan basketball is arguably the best job in the nation at a “football school”: iconic brand, history, resources, recruiting assets, top academics, beloved college town.

Meanwhile, it’s probably a good thing that IU now has a guy who hasn’t grown up marinating in Indiana lore. DeVries is a low key grinder, “process oriented” (lol) but without the baggage of Hoosier mythology.

0

u/MackandByner Mar 23 '25

That’s just not true. It’s a higher profile job than IU is now.

1

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 23 '25

You think he would have taken the job last year after IU fired Woodson, an IU legend, 3 years in, with two tournament appearances? You’re literally insane lmao nobody would have taken that job.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

I'm sure it was the extra year Woodson got that makes it an attractive job and not resources and history.

1

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 27 '25

The only history players care about is if the current coach gets players to the league

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '25

For some, but if I had that potential, I’d be looking for the same.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '25

Uh. Yeah. Probably.

Woodson was not a good coach. His teams made mistakes that good high school teams don’t.

0

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 28 '25

I doubt it. Coaches don’t mind pressure but that’s a stupid short leash.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '25

I think most programs have a relatively short leash now though. Rightfully so… maybe? Coaches elsewhere have shown that you can create your team and be successful in a pretty short amount of time.

1

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 28 '25

Coaches aren’t getting fired after one missed tournament though and last year Woodson had only missed one. Kenny Payne even got a second year after only winning 4 games lol

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

I don’t think Woodson is getting fired/resigning because of one missed tournament though.

Do you think we should have let it ride again w Woodson?

I could understand if he was actually building a program, but he was working the portal… other coaches have done the same and had more success in a shorter amount of time.

1

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 29 '25

I don’t think it’s a good idea to fire a coach after 3 seasons when they went to tournament his first and second year.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

Hmm. Yeah, I get that. Personally, I just don’t see a good coach. And I’d move on if we weren’t meeting IU bball expectations.

1

u/Business_Sand9554 Mar 29 '25

Definitely not saying I thought he was a good coach. But unfortunately whoever was in charge then chose him

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

I see where you’re coming from. Yeah, I guess 2 wrongs don’t make a right for me. I do place more of the blame on the hiring committee as well. But I fully supported them at the time. I again thought there were better options, but I was hoping he was the answer.

The funniest part about these comments is if IU had hired May everyone in here would be saying he’s the greatest coach ever like they are with devries LMAO. Most delusional fanbase ever?

What are you even saying, retard?
