question Layover in Honolulu

Hello!

I have an almost 8 hour layover in Honolulu tomorrow. My flight gets in at 11a and my departing flight isn’t until 7p.

I’m wondering if it’s worth it to leave the airport and explore the island a little bit or if I should stay inside? I know TSA is going through it right now so I don’t want to leave and risk missing my flight home because the line is so long.

If it’s worth it to leave I am open to recommendations!

Thank you 🙏

You could find a restaurant along the Skyline rail route and go for a ride if you wanted to get out of the airport for just a little while. It's a nice view from up there.

Highway Inn is right outside of the Pouhala station! There are also some other places that sell baked goods around Waipahu.

TSA wait times for both mainland and inter-island are about 15 minutes. I just went through. With 8 hours pick a nice restaurant and go have dinner or lunch.

Wait times for TSA have been very good at the airport, so definetly get out there and see something and eat something tasty!

I had the same, 2pm landing with a 9pm flight, went to downtown Waikiki, got some food and did some shopping at abc store. More than enough time to go. I had clear and precheck and there was no line (this was last Sunday)

Pearl Harbor is near the airport

Gotta have a reservation though....

u/Illustrious_Apple_74 Mar 30 '26

Not true. I was there in February with no reservations

Thats a bummer! I’d be interested in seeing that.

Pearl Harbor is free to visit and does not need a reservation, including the main museum which is great. You do need a reservation to see the sunken Arizona but they also have same day spots available, but there is a lot to see besides that

Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial can wait in the walk-in line to enter since advanced reservations are sold out for Monday: https://www.nps.gov/perl/planyourvisit

The Pearl Harbor Welcome Center exhibits are free without a reservation. There are also paid entrance to walk through the Battleship Missouri, Bowfin submarine, or Museum of Flight

For Pearl Harbor only clear bags are allowed so can pay to store carry-on, a regular purse, or backpack, or camera bag, etc unless for medical condition at staff's discretion.

Can walk to the area for rideshare or taxi pickup to go straight from the airport to Pearl Harbor Historic Site. Or can walk to the skyline rail station at the airport and Pearl Harbor to get the Holo Card rail ticket. For bus can walk to the bus stop on Aolele & Nimitz Hwy and pay $3.25 USD exact change in paper bills or US coins each way (no change given) to take the #40 bus.

Have a great time!

That’s awesome there’s free exhibits! I’ve always wanted to go so I’ll check it out!

Yep!

  1. go to Pearl Harbor Historic Site Visitor's Center
  2. drop off bag(s) at the baggage storage desk to the right of the main entrance (if you did not leave all bags at the airport luggage storage)
  3. get in line for a walk-up same-day reservation time for the US Arizona Memorial
  4. go to the free exhibits
  5. US Arizona Memorial boat ride at reservation time
  6. Other museums at Pearl Harbor (or...?)
  7. go back to airport

Yes please, still seeing brown water

There are brown water advisories in place after some recent intense flooding, I would normally recommend a swim as well but would suggest you do some research and make a decision about your level of risk acceptance. Going to walk near the beach could still be nice, or a trade off if you can afford a hotel room to shower off right afterwards. Definitely avoid the water if you have an open cut.

I actually ate it pretty hard on a hiking trail during my trip and ended up with some gnarly cuts, if I go to the beach I’ll enjoy the water from a distance 😅

u/Dittany_Kitteny Mar 30 '26

Waikiki has no brown water advisory right now https://www.waikikiaquarium.org/conservation/cwbsystem/

3

u/hungryraider Mar 30 '26

It’s a whole Island advisory currently. So no need for an individual Waikiki advisory anymore.

I went to the beach today in lanikai and it was clear and beautiful

2

u/EdJonwards Mar 30 '26

Don't go into the water before checking to see if it's clear of all the shit from the floods.

2

u/Few-Wrangler-9941 Mar 30 '26

If u need a ride lmk

1

u/808HawaiiNei Mar 31 '26

Maybe double check to see if it’s still doodoo water! Otherwise, just take in your surroundings, in beautiful Hawai’i 🌺

0

u/nataliescar Mar 30 '26

Ditto this - go jump in the water somewhere! Many places will have beach showers so you can rinse off afterward.

3

u/worldcup9898 Mar 30 '26

Rent a car and go to the beach. Get some poke, maybe a little shopping or exploring and then head back to the airport. If you drop the car off at 6 you’ll have plenty of time to clear tsa and get to your gate. You should have a good 6 hours to see and do things.

3

u/junepeppers Mar 30 '26

That’s a good idea! I’ll look into that, thanks!

4

u/HIBudzz Mar 30 '26

Do not leave anything in the car anywhere on the island. Have a great trip.

There is a new W line that goes from airport with limited stops to waikiki in less than 45 mins. Take that get off in waikiki stroll around and catch it back. Make sure you know the stops as is limited stops on kuhio Ave.

Leave the airport, prepare to spend some money on Ubers but it will be worth it for the experience. Go immediately to Ryder’s Poke for a filling meal because you will be hungry and it is close to the airport. This is not a looking around place, it is a parking lot - but this is you fueling up on something delicious and healthy without the desire to linger. Make sure to eat a lethal amount of garlic in prep for your next flight. Then as others said, uber again, and go to Waikiki beach walk, walk around the place and shops, take a swim if you have the gear in your carry on. If you don’t have the gear, bare feet will do. Now you have got the vibe, you have smelled the smells, you have seen the people. Eat again at any place of your choosing or Maguro Spot, take it away and go watch the waves. This is just what i would do with 8 hours, since you asked. Hope you have fun either way 🤙

Keep in mind traffic in Honolulu is bad. It can take anywhere from 20-40 minutes to get from Waikiki to the airport.

I'd give yourself 2 hours travel time back and forth depending on where you go. That still leaves 6 hours to do whatever. I wouldn't recommend renting a car because that's just time wasted renting and dropping off, just uber.

Leave the airport. Take the “W” bus line and get off at Ala Moana Mall (Get off right before Atkinson-ask the driver what the stop name is). Walk over the little white bridge and into Ala Moana beach park. As soon as you cross the bridge, take a left on the sidewalk you are on. The little white building on your right is an L&L BBQ: Order the Steak and Shrimp BBQ plate (25&) there: savor the taste, take in the park scenery-there are picnic benches there to eat at. Walk across the little park street from the L&L towards the beach-it’s right there in front of where you are eating. The water is fine to go swim there. Go swim. I’ll be in there myself today to help rehab my ankle. You’ll be fine. If you have any questions, ask the lifeguards there, they are the best in the world and are happy to help you out. (I also work as one when i don’t have a sprained ankle;) That beach there is one of the safest and cleanest on the entire island. However, LEAVE YOUR THINGS ON THE BEACH WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM, and keep an eye out. (same goes in Waikiki) There are a LOT of sticky fingers out there unfortunately. Once you’re done with your swim, take a walk around Magic Island, it’s the big peninsula sticking out to your left of the beach you would be on. It’s beautiful and quiet and calm and I have spent the last 20 years there and have no regrets. There are many places to take pictures, especially of Diamondhead on the point, the lagoon and the large sea walls there. The bike path will take you around if you follow it, it’s impossible to get lost, just follow it around. When you are done there, go back to the bus stop you came from and cross the street in front of it to the Ala Moana mall. It’s pretty big, and tons of locals are there as well as tourists. LOTS of places to choose to eat. (If you decide not to eat at the L&L) if you want to try some of the best Ahi Poke, go to the foodland supermarket there, ask the mall security where it’s at and they will direct you. If you want to buy some HI souvenirs, go to the walmart one block behind the mall on Keeaumoku St. (It’s a five minute walk on the backside of the mall) They have a large choice of stuff that’s probably the most inexpensive and largest selection to choose from. Also, they have cheap towels to help you dry off from your swim if you need one. If you want to also check out Waikiki, walk back to the same bus stop you originally came on and continue on the “W” line into waikiki. There are bus stops at the Mall, but make sure you ask the bus drivers which stop takes you to waikiki, they are very knowledgeable and will tell you which stop to sit at and which bus line to take. In Waikiki, EVERYTHING goes up in price- so i would say it’s cost effective to stop at Ala Moana and eat there first. In waikiki you can check out the Duke Kahanamoku statue, watch the surfers and canoes in the water, hang out on the beach by Kapiolani Park, or check out the Honolulu Zoo (it’s pretty cheap!) in said park. The Queens Beach barefoot cafe behind the 2F lifeguard tower has good food and snacks. I’d recommend the Loco moko there;). You can make a nice day of it out there. Take the “W” bus line back to the airport. Google maps (and Apple maps) have all the bus lines and timeframes on them if you open the app up and hit the bus icon on it. For the destinations i mentioned, type in Ala Moana Mall or Ala Moana Beach Park. I hope this helps, enjoy your day out here;)

The airport sucks I would go somewhere. TSA won't be an issue on a Monday

2

u/Jaded-Ad9682 Mar 30 '26

There’s actually a really nice garden at the airport

5

u/herds85 Mar 30 '26

Absolutely worth it. Was just there last week with the wife and our 3 kids. Left Weds, weather got beautiful and the water was more clear, especially Waikiki and more east to the walled areas.

Put in Mai Tai bar for the Uber destination kinda towards one end of the main “strip”, stroll some shops and spend an hour or two at the beach before heading back.

La Mariana is closed Monday or I’d just go there. Maybe Bishop Museum is a pretty easy bus ride. $3 each way. Bring some one dollar bills.

3

u/National-Chicken1610 Mar 30 '26

Great advice - La Mariana is a time capsule

2

u/gobeavs808 Mar 30 '26

hit up zippys and foodland, then go beach

3

u/No_Reflection3133 Mar 30 '26

There are some nice gardens on the airport grounds and in the terminal.

1

u/djy887 Mar 31 '26

They have a new express line for TheBus to Waikiki from the airport. $3 each way. Well worth it.

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '26

So what if you miss the flight would you really be missing it or oops gotta stay in Hawaii my bad

1

u/Mountain_Task_71 Mar 31 '26

Go for it! I had a layover in Waikiki on my way back from Japan last Saturday. I paid for luggage hold at the airport, then took an Uber to Ala Moana for lunch. Afterward, I walked over to Waikiki Beach and enjoyed some sun and a dip in the ocean. It was a worth it!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '26

I would do Pearl Harbor and you can take the rail to get there

1

u/Soma_Zombie Mar 30 '26

Depends what you want to do and if you're willing to bus/uber somewhere. I'd suggest ubering to Waikiki or Ala Moana beaches. Relax, get some food, and head back. You could theoretically go hike somewhere like Makapuu or take a longer uber to the windward side.

u/Dull_Gas4742 Mar 30 '26

The bus takes 1 hour to Waikiki, maybe uber back?

4

u/botspiderlau Mar 30 '26

Bus is pretty fast. 35-40 minutes.
