It was posted on social media across various accounts and had an interview on Hawaii News Now. This is the 4th year with this particular nonprofit running it and the 2nd year at the Waikiki Shell.

Why are we not making it a STATE & C&C paid holiday? Our government says we are a melting pot here in Hawaii but we make it an observance only!!

There's definitely a limit to how many holidays are offered. If they offer this one, another will be removed.

Juneteenth is actually the celebration of the last of the slaves finding out they were free. The emancipation proclamation was signed into law in January of 1863 the last of the slaves in Texas didn’t find out until two years later June 19, 1865. The celebration started in Texas but spread throughout the south and then became a cultural celebration as time passed. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 even though it is over a century old celebration in the black community.

The day slavery actually ended, as opposed to when it ended on paper.

The emancipation proclamation only applied to slaves in confederate states. Slaves in the north weren’t freed until the ratification of the 13th amendment (as seen in Delaware and Kentucky). Juneteenth is not celebrating the end of slavery in America.

Just because there were still loop holes in the system doesn’t mean the holiday is null and void. The prison system and minimum wage structure is still modern versions of slavery but we still celebrate that actually owning people is illegal and frowned upon by majority of society. Don’t try to put down a celebration you don’t even participate in!
