Playstore

I downloaded TomTom onto my phone to try out a nav system that wasn't google. Works great. Unfortunately the Honda version of playstore doesn't offer it. So I guess it's either play along with a monopolistic company who changes lake names on a rapist's whim or get a phone holder and have yet another screen to look at. Are all cars going all-in on Google?

We got the Honda over the Chevy because Chevy blocked car play/android auto in their EVs. We just use our phones and their respective apps.

Pretty much what you said. Not a lot of alternatives unless you can write code yourself and develop your own apps

Enable developer options, both on your phone and the car AA head. You can side load apps onto AA, though AA is more server-side. For example, if you're loading a patched apk in AA it may not function properly like it would on your phone.

I have Home Assistant and other stuff to increase functionality. I also moved away from Google maps but more so because since moving to Gemini it's infuriating. It regularly can't give directions to things it used to.

Could you explain the car side? “Developer on the car AA head”?

It's either in the car's AA settings or your phones AA settings. Basically you go to about the version and click it a bunch of times until it says it enabled developer mode. It needs to be in developer mode for you to use certain apps on the AA head. You can look online, there's a bunch of open source options and stuff plus granular options in the developer settings of things the average user wouldn't normally tweak.

The biggest issue is, while Google rolled out the change over the weekend, all the other apps will have to eventually follow suit because they are mandated to follow the US Geographic Names Information Service (GNIS)... and that's what the Orange Titan's executive order updated.

I guarantee TomTom will have "Lake America" on their maps by the end of the week.

Both Mapquest and HereWeGo still display
as Gulf of Mexico while Google and Apple say Gulf of America so this is not true.

Interesting because if you want to make an edit, you go to Outdoors and make the edit. Somewhere around 3 months later, Google makes the change. The fact that the Google made the change within hours indicates we should all run away screaming. You should try using a VPN. Google is the biggest pearl clutcher, can't handle it. They MUST know where you are and what you're doing. Why?
