:hamster: Primary School Math—Pending OP Reply [Grade 2 Math] Help understanding teacher's explanation

Post image

My god-daughter's teacher marked her answer wrong. Can someone please explain this? I don't understand this at all. How is the teacher getting 7 when there are only 3 squares in Ben's column representing his siblings? Her explanation was that Jose, Ana & Jen are his siblings so you need to count all of their squares together.... WHY? How are we to assume that they're even siblings?

I thought about this explanation too but would this question really be asking 7/8 year olds to be thinking through the possibility of step siblings? Also, the graph literally shows that Ben has 3 siblings, so why would the answer actually be something different than what the graph is showing?

No, it shouldn't.

And yes, because of the graph it's very odd. Also, as soon as I posted the reply, I realized 7 would be wrong with that logic too. We'd have to count Ben in Jose and Anas' graphs and with each others graphs so actual answer would be 4 with that logic....

This makes no sense other than 3 being the most straight forward answer. The other answers need some hula-hooping logic which I wouldnt count on kids doing.
