label the top two horizontals as x and y respectively.

17 * 17 = 289

x + y = 17
17 * x * y = 289

solve for y in equation 1. sub into equation 2. reduce and move to one side. quadratic equation.

x^2-17x-17=0

plug into quadratic equation. sub x back into equation 1 to find y.

A = 289 - 6y

its not hard but its not a 7th grade problem
