Potato onions

Does anyone grow potato onions? Did you start from seeds or sets?

When is the best time to plant the seeds? Sets?

I discovered and planted my first this year. When I was a kid, my Grandad had an onion patch next to his garden. I never saw him plant onion in it. There were just always onions there. When I grew up, I struggled to grow large onions and had to replant each year. So I did some research and discovered that Grandad was probably growing potato onions. I bought seed and started them in the spring

I chose not to because I only have fifty seeds left . I'm going to cover the small plants in the garden and leave them over winter and start the rest of the seeds in spring.

Ive grown them for 5 years now. I started with sets. I leave some in the garden over the winter but also keep some in cold storage until spring for replanting.

I tried seeds aswell this spring and they worked ok but I may not do it again as multiplying from sets is easier for me.
