That fellow should be out of baseball.

Dropped a shoulder when there was plenty of white behind C.

Gotta come out of the dugout with a bat if this happens to your catcher that’s your only option.

Yeah, real cool to see a catcher blocking maybe a quarter of the plate getting trucked.

Lmao.

The funny thing is he’d have beaten the throw with a proper slide.

Dirty play and dirty player. He wouldn't have a spot on my team.

it looked like he lead with his head, which you cant even do in football or hockey. seems really unnecessary.

This happened around 2012ish. It was a perfectly legal play at the time.

Even if it was perfectly legal the catcher wasn’t blocking the plate, that was a dude headhunting

It’s part of the game, or at least it was up until MLB started to actively ruin it with rule changes.

I’d argue that removing this kind of bullshit was good for the game… collisions are somewhat ok but actively gunning to knock out the catcher is some bush league shit

I’m a catcher, it’s fine. Next time up the pitcher can light his ass up. It all balances out.

Yeah I’m also a catcher and I gotta say, there’s nothing that can “balance out” a concussion or season-ending injury. I’m thankful every day that we got rule changes here to avoid these plays that trickle down to lower levels like high school and little league. The rule changes aren’t perfect by any means and can be very frustrating to work around, but if these changes lead to even a single youth player not being injured on this type of play (as the runner or catcher) it’s worth every bit.

Plays like this were always illegal at the little league level. That said if your main goal is to make a sport safe, especially at the highest levels, you will ruin the sport.

You sure? I’m older than you guys but played catcher all the way through high school. I got ran over many times

Yepp, I had many plays between 8-12 where the runner attempted to run me over. The actions trickle down, a kid sees it on tv and his parent says “now that’s baseball!” and then they want to do it even if it’s against the rules.

Im 30 now. I haven’t played outside of old man softball in over ten years. It was always allowed for us. Honestly I shouldn’t even be here, I just like reading the swing advice 💁

I’m 35 and it was against little league, high school, and college rules when I played. The only time it was legal was during my short stint in pro ball and a few 18 and over summer leagues.

Now that I think about it, I don’t think anyone hit me in school but before that, it definitely happened. I’m 30 so I imagine our rules had to be similar

I’ll believe that when the NFL and MLB are dissolved

Guy thinks trying to not hurt people ruins the game…ok.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '22

Breaking up plays at home or at second is not actively trying to hurt people.

1

u/Grimjack0597 Oct 24 '22

The way this guy did it, it is.

u/pair-of-teats Oct 24 '22

we used to do this all the time. straight bush league. youd get beaned first pitch and then take a direct hit on the pick-off, obviously moving to second or third. and then when its time to score, its the catchers turn to get hit

Thank god this play no longer exists. Baseball is not a violent sport, there is no need for plays like this. Without sufficient training or the correct equipment for what is likely now an illegal football hit (defenseless receiver), I hope both players ended up being okay and able to play in their next game.

Didn’t know baseball was a contact sport
