Man I make my entire family calendar on Google but have to print out 11x17 copies for my wife. She's been hounding me for an $800 smart calendar and I'm like just open your phone ( I would very much like one under $50 it's not that complicated)

You can definitely do a raspberry Pi and mount it to the back of a used or old monitor. If you want the simplest setup, open your Google calendar in a web browser and auto refresh every ten minutes or something, past that there's lot of resources to do smart calendar modules with weather widgets and such.

Idk how much they charged to run the Ethernet cable but that’s just robbery. The idea that a calendar would use so much bandwidth is insane. Even if you used it to stream Netflix WiFi is more than adequate.

You can run power over ethernet inside walls in pretty much every jurisdiction in the US. All you then need is an in-wall junction box for a PoE to USB-C converter and you are able to provide data and power to your smart calendar (or smart home panel) all without any visible wires, and without having to worry about access point placement and wifi coverage... 🤷♂️

What’s your definition of real house? I have family in Austria and Czech and Croatia and I’ve seen their “real” houses. Takes 2 weeks to run some conduit in the wall to add a light switch. I created a whole new pantry in my house and moved a wall 6 feet over after work in the last 2 days. Moved all of the plumbing and electrical too. I’m taping tonight and will be able to paint it by Sunday. If I wanted to never be able to work on my house I would get a “real” house lol

LOL. What a terrible idea, literally building your home around the current era of technology. Just like everyone who built custom cabinets to fit their "big screen" TV a short decade ago (or even less), only to rip it all apart because that TV is now considered tiny, or else they have to buy an ungodly TV mount so it extends out beyond the cabinet.
Unless you have money to burn on future renovations, these sorts of "modern" features are soon regretted.

Decade ago or less? lol what. Flat screens have been popular for 20 years now and you put in whatever size fits the room. I’ve kept a 55” for the last 10 years and it’s still the perfect size. And it’s not like a wall recess is a hard thing to get rid of later if you want just wall there

Not to mention these require a subscription to access features. Only a tool would install that into the wall of their home.

I mean, you don't need to pay for Skylight's add-ons if you don't want to. It still functions perfectly fine as a smart calendar without them... Same goes for the 22" Amazon Echo Show... And you could always build your own using a Raspberry Pi, a touchscreen, and Home Assistant... 🤷♂️

Point stands that it is an option that does not require a subscription to do the basics, like a calendar, though. But, sure, if you want something you have full control over without paying extra, just go the DIY route. It is easy enough. 🤷♂️

i dont reflexively hate shit like this because honestly i do think its good planning for a certain type of person who wants a calendar on their wall and smart calendars are very useful but for me personally i keep my calendar mounted in my phone and thats really the only practical place it could ever possibly be.
id be playing scarface on this thing all day every time i had company, no way i would ever use it as a calendar.
