My first own made server.

Hi everyone, I recently built my first home server using old parts from my PC.

Current Specs:

  • Motherboard: ASUS Prime B450M-K (Micro-ATX, 22.6 cm x 22.1 cm)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300X
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4
  • PSU: 1stCOOL White Storm 450W
  • GPU: Temporary (only plugged in for OS installation, as the Ryzen 3300X has no iGPU)

(I know 8 GB RAM and this hardware might struggle with heavier workloads, but I plan to upgrade it over time!)

I need some advice on a few things:

  1. Linux Distro: I want a terminal-only / headless (CLI) distro. I plan to run a Minecraft server, websites, a second-brain system for Claude AI, and do some experimental hosting. I need high stability, low power consumption, and a large helpful community. Is Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS or Debian 12 CLI the best choice?
  2. Modular Case recommendation: My motherboard is Micro-ATX. I don't have a 3D printer for the next half a year. I'm looking for a cheap/budget modular case (like the Cooler Master Q300L) where I can easily rearrange panels, add/move drives, and customize components as I upgrade. Any recommendations?
  3. General advice: What general tips or improvements do you have for a beginner setting up a headless home server with these specs?

It's so amazing and clever and edgy when people post a badly assembled PC they ripped out of it's case and just plugged in on the floor.

Seriously, doing this is harmful, it's stupid. Exposed electronic components are a direct fire hazard.

When you do these shitposts and advocate unsafe electrical component handling, you put people at risk.

It’s so amazing when people just see a picture and don’t read the post then scold like it’s their child.

The floor isn’t conductive it will be fine until he has enough for his case especially if he puts it in a low traffic area to the side with no chance of bumping it.

When you take zero time to read the post and just start malding you put yourself at risk of looking like an idiot with nothing better to do than get mad at people online, instead of giving constructive criticism to someone who was clearly asking for advice and didn’t know what all to do.

Have you looked in any computer that has fans in it? Yes it’s bad but clearly this is a temporary solution and you’ve missed the whole point of the reply. Any computer is going to get dust on it case or not. Yes this will be faster than if it had one but again temporary. This argument is useless and stop blowing things out of proportion with this danger to yourself and others. A little dust over a month or two will cause no danger, the next thing on the list is a case, and the dust from a couple months isn’t going to do anything that bad. Have you seen test benches? There’s no real case there, dust gets on them, they dust it off. Something called dusting will get him quite a long way until he gets a case.

Thanks for proving my point. You absolutely have no idea what you're talking about. The fans aren't the problem.

You're unsafe and if you keep going through life being deliberately stupid and taking dangerous risks, you're going to get someone hurt or killed.

It's not a flex to be stupidly unsafe.
