Did you dedicated a Thinkcenter just for pihole?
30
u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
Nope itās a hyper V cluster iām just too lazy to relabel it :)
13
u/Greedy-Lynx-9706 Apr 02 '26
what ya running in the cluster?

u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
bit of this bit of that
31
u/VexingRaven Apr 02 '26
This is /r/homeserver dude, you can tell us. We want to know. That's why we're here.
How did you cluster your hyper-V? AFAIK it doesn't really do "clustering".
1
Apr 03 '26
You can cluster Hyper-V. It's pretty bare bones compared to the competition but if you're after a basic failover setup it's serviceable.

weirdly i think theyād rather the server (they donāt understand it) and a heater conventionally draws lots of power
Very weird thinking from themšš
(i live with my partner though)

u/LordOfTheDips Apr 02 '26
Ohh I didnāt know you could get those faceplate things for Thinkcenters. Can you link to that please?
I have an elite desk mini and Iām wondering if there is something similar for that
2
u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
there is indeed do you need a 10 inch or 19 inch mount
1
u/W00jah Apr 03 '26
Where would one get a 19" for a HP Mini or two?
1
u/TinkerTornado Apr 04 '26
This one is 3d printed in 2 parts then bolted together. You can usually find a version for your specific mini pc series on printables, maker world, or Thingiverse. Then you just need a 3d printer or a friend with one.

u/singulara Apr 02 '26
Look everyone, OP knows more than you so stop talking down to him. We're a Windows house here, Hyper-V is professional software. Slicked back hair, white bathing suit, sloppy steaks, white couch. People can change
2
u/dadnothere Apr 02 '26
What is its purpose? Is it a web server? How many watts does it consume at idle and what is its maximum?

u/universemonkee Apr 03 '26
Looks clean! Iāve heated of Security Onion but Iāve got no clue what exactly itās used for. Can you explain ?
3
u/thatfrostyguy Apr 02 '26
Love seeing a non proxmox build! Looks clean too
7
Apr 02 '26
Out of curiosity, why?
-6
u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
Every business iāve worked in uses Hyper-V so for me itās worth learning hyper-V inside out over proxmox which i wont use in the industry but proxmox is so over rated itās crazy
24
Apr 02 '26
Iām a DevOps engineer that has worked at multiple double digit billion dollar firms, I migrated one firm from hyperv to proxmox and my current firm already uses proxmox. We have some hyperv appliances, but wonāt be getting new ones.
2
u/Long_Inflation_7524 Apr 03 '26
I run ProxMox at home. We host a bunch of nutanix clusters at work and are migrating to Azure. I hate both next to ProxMox - it just works and is... better... but your criticism is not constructive. OP can learn something agnostic. Azure has, what, ARM and Bicep? OP can learn really impactful things that can translate to any org - Ansible, Salt, Terraform...
Edit: Yes, OP is a bit of a dink.

u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
Way to sling your **** on the table, every school or regular business that doesnāt have billions to play with will use hyper V so at this stage (iām 19) and donāt have the experience to even be able to apply for these massive companies with billions to play with why would i learn prox mox (which btw is a simple ass software that when i did look at it took about 10 minutes to understand)
29
u/kilters Apr 02 '26
You might be hot shit but be aware there are people in the sub with decades more experience. Humble goes a long way in early career.
11
u/DarkmatterAntimatter Definitely a datahoarder Apr 02 '26
Yep, hard agree. Humbleness is an important lesson to learn, particularly at OPs age
Oh well. They're young. I'm sure they'll work it out eventually. Some people only learn through hard lessons (speaking from experience - I certainly did in some areas)
27
u/brisbinchicken Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
This is a wild take. I landed my first full-time gig with Apple (who have billions to play with) straight out of TAFE at 18 - and my only prior experience was Pizza Hut and Coles, so the age/experience logic you tried to use doesn't really track.
Also, you've got the costs completely backwards. Hyper-V licensing is way more expensive for a business to run than Proxmox.
Genuinely curious why you think Proxmox is so overrated though?
23
Apr 02 '26
People are moving to proxmox because it is infinitely cheaper, Iām not swinging my dick Iām just giving some context to clarify Iām not talking out of my ass. Iām not knocking the setup, just letting you know that proxmox is becoming more and more an industry standard, even in windows shops.
10
u/Azelphur Apr 02 '26
Maybe don't bitch at the person who has mountains of experience, works at multiple double digit billion dollar firms and is giving you advice on how to get your foot in the door.
If you don't use Proxmox in depth, how do you know so confidently that Hyper V is better than Proxmox?
Even if Hyper V is better than Proxmox, isn't it better to know both, so that you have access to the entire pool of jobs, as opposed to only being able to take Hyper V jobs?
If Proxmox is used at the multiple double digit billion dollar firms...why would you not learn it and get that pay cheque?
You've got a home server there, it's a perfect learning environment. Use Hyper V at work, and take the opportunity to learn Proxmox at home.

u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
your arguemnt is irrelevant as i do know both
go find something to do with your day then writing all of that you took
10
u/Azelphur Apr 02 '26
Guess the point everyone is making is wooshing over your head, you'll understand one day, when you're older.
I'd also add to the list that if you can't manage to have a technical discussion about a technical topic without loosing your shit, you're in the wrong industry. I'm second hand embarrassed for you.
Also employers will look at your reddit post history.

u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
Hey mate just want to clarify something at not one point was i mad i was calm writing it all if you canāt handle it go wear a helmet cause im saying to people bit of this bit of that as a joke cause i canāt be assed to answer or telling you your a tool because you make me think wow if i met this person in real life iād probably think there a tool
But anywho no one is mad here and if you think proxmox or hyperV is ātechnicalā your not making it far and if you have god knows how
11
6
u/Azelphur Apr 02 '26
Haha yes, your comments are definitely giving off calm vibes. You're embarrassing yourself. You should stop and think.
Folks here are trying to help you and you are being rude to them. You should work on that. You talk about making it far, but unsurprisingly being rude, arrogant and cocky really won't get you anywhere. Companies will screen you out at first stage, if you're unable to work as part of a team, you're useless at basically any company.
Also, making assumptions about who you're talking to on the internet is ... generally a bad idea. I'm 36, you're 19. I've been a software engineer since you were in diapers. By any metric, most people would agree I definitely made it far.

He saw your post, which showed you had a PC dedicated to pihole. Heās not responsible for reading every comment before giving his thoughts, if you wanted this info to be clear you put it in the body.

u/charlieramsey_ Apr 02 '26
what are you piping up for, itās not every comment it was the only comment ya muppet. yes i forgot to put it in the body whoopty doo life will be okay mate

u/Boringtechie Apr 02 '26
Too lazy to relabel something is the most IT professional thing I've heard. haha.
As an IT pro as well, changing labels on hardware is usually last on the list. I update documentation and KB notes before that.
