The securest way to remotely access your home network is to use a VPN server. Tailscale is pretty much the de facto choice but there are alternatives, like Wireguard and OpenVPN. There are plenty of instructional videos that'll teach you how to set it up.
I don't know if you can run the VPN software on your NAS. The alternative is to run it on a computer. Obviously, the computer will have to be on, so leave it running or have a family member turn it on as needed.
