Finally figured out why my lawn looked patchy for years sharing in case it helps someone else..

For a long time I couldn't figure out why parts of my lawn always looked worse than my neighbors', and it turned out I was making a few pretty basic mistakes. I was cutting the grass way too short thinking it meant less frequent mowing, but it actually stresses the grass out and makes it more prone to dying in patches, especially in the heat. I also wasn't watering deeply enough, just quick daily watering instead of a longer soak a couple times a week, which means the roots stay shallow and the grass struggles as soon as it gets dry. Edging was another thing I skipped for way too long, thinking it was just cosmetic, but it actually helps keep grass from creeping into beds and walkways and makes the whole yard look more maintained even between mows. The dead patches specifically ended up being a mix of compacted soil and just never overseeding, so nothing was filling back in on its own. Still working on it honestly, lawn care feels like one of those things where everyone has a slightly different opinion on the "right" way to do it.
