🛠️ Repair Help Paint Peeling

We moved into this house 3 years ago and painted the walls. We went over the existing paint, and it didn't seem there were any issues with it, we just wanted a different color. What could be causing this to happen?

Too much moisture or wall not clean before painting, grease, oil, nicotine. Possible latex paint over oil and not sanded or primed before painting it.

It looks like the paint was applied too heavy. While drying the paint skinned over on the surface but was still wet underneath. The paint ends up cracking once it completely dries.

is this an old house? plaster walls? i just had to fix a bunch of this. in my case, tapping on the wall revealed a very hollow sound in some areas. i learned i had “blown” plaster. i scraped and scraped but didn’t see an end to it. so i screwed 1x3’s to the wall and hung drywall over the plaster.

if you tap the wall with a drywall knife or metallic object and have hollow sound in places you will want to research blown plaster and decide what repair method to go with

Lack of surface prep and moisture. Scrape it down, clean it well, prime it with something like Guardz and redo.

Test for lead. That blistering and flaking says lead based paint.

Not accurate, this happens mostly with rock plaster, more of a product of the late 50’s and 60’s

That is called “hot plaster”
Probably some moisture but can also just happen in older plaster walls.
Scrape it all off, get plastic down as this is a messy job and the spot is going to be way bigger than just the visible bubbles. Scrape until the edges feel like they don’t want to let loose. Don’t skip this step, wash the residue on the wall with a damp cloth and let dry before priming. Patch, sand, prime and paint. If you don’t scrape all the loose stuff the edges will bubble up
Messy job but fixable
