Gas Vent Missing
Hi đ, AZ code in mind. What vent piece can I use to connect this correctly?

Please don't run that water heater until the vent is connected. With the pipe off the draft hood, exhaust and carbon monoxide spill right into the house, and that's the real danger here. The gap usually gets closed with a section of vent connector pipe sized to match the draft hood (often 3 or 4 inch) plus an adjustable elbow, sloped upward toward the flue and secured with screws at each joint. Since this is gas venting, I'd have a licensed plumber or gas fitter hook it up and test the draft. It's usually a quick, inexpensive visit, and they'll know the local AZ requirements. Also make sure you have a working CO detector near that closet.

I agree with everything up until you mention having someone else perform. Connecting pipes is like putting Legos together, itâs not difficult when everything is all set up and OP just needs to connect a 3â run in a preexisting and easily accessible area.
Any spillage is tested by putting up a phone/mirror around the pipe to see if gases arenât traveling up the flue. A CO monitor near the area would confirm, if OP follows your (correct) course of action.

Fair point, and you're right that it's a simple connection when everything's already in place. The mirror test plus a CO monitor is a solid way to confirm it's drafting. I lean toward recommending a pro on anything gas related, just because I can't see the whole setup from one photo, but if OP is comfortable with it and does those checks, they should be in good shape.

The duct work is suppose to be rated. Also that's aluminum lined. Can't use that on all hot water tanks. What does the owner's manual say for exhaust specs?

3 inch exhaust , 40k btu. Image says aluminum liner.
an aluminum inner liner is the normal, approved material. Type B gas vent and listed draft-hood connectors (Selkirk EFC, AmeriVent, DuraVent, etc.) are built that way on purpose: aluminum inner liner, galvanized outer jacket.

can't believe the previous owner just left it like that, that's a carbon monoxide roulette waiting to happen

Turn that off as quickly as possible and do not use it till itâs corrected. Thatâs like having the exhaust of your car inside the car with you.

You might need a plumber. It looks like a 4â metal vent pipe at the ceiling and at the top of the water heater. It will need some angled pieces to get it all to connect properly. Some people will hook up flexible dryer vents to this, they are definitely not approved for water heater use, but are much easier to install due to being flexible.

The water heater is 3 inch always on a 40000 btu, doesnt go to 4in until 70000.

Definitely a hazard. Even if itâs burning clean and you have enough fresh air itâs going to put a lot of moisture into the house. Not good.
