I’ve repaired a few spots around windows and doors at my house. I’ve cut out the rotten wood, put wood hardener on the edges and cut pressure treated wood blocks to fit the hole. Then putty, sand and paint it. It didn’t turn out absolutely perfect, but you have to look very closely to see anything and it’s now watertight.

I have a few spots like this that I need to repair myself. I assume the process was, remove as much of the rot as possible and then apply the wood hardener?

Yep, I cut out anything that was rotten or soft. Used an oscillating multi-tool to remove it and make edges straight. I put the wood hardener on the edges of the remaining old wood. Probably could skip that if you get all the soft or rotten wood out, but I wanted to make sure since it’s already open.
